I was really tired, so I just went to sleep. The last thing I said to him was to be careful.

That was May 2nd. It seems that was the last time he was active on Inthe00s and Myspace (Same with his brother). However, I'm guessing it's just a vacation, or maybe they're having computer problems... or perhaps they caught young Marshal looking at porn during the wee hours of the night, so they gave the computer the ol' toss out the window. Because I think when I searched his name, something would have come up, if anything bad happened.

For example- the girl I was talking about, the school district sent her parents study materials and lesson plans to administer to her, and every so often she would have to go up to the school for them to test her to make sure she was learning.. but it doesn't necessarily involve a paid tutor if that is what you're thinking.

I've got a 17 year old daughter who I think is smart and wary and cautious and whom i trust almost completely to  do AOL IM, Xanga, Myspace, and I like to let her have some independance and not feel like I'm watching every move, and she works hard in school to get good grades, she's got college goals set and has her drivers license, however I am her father and will do what I need to if I feel it's protecting her or giving her some boundaries. But I am allowing her to grow up and shes showed maturity. Maybe Marsh's family disconnected their internet for other reasons, who knows. MidKnightDarkness is our newsperson and will hopefully keep us posted.

That doesn't sound good. It depends to what extent Marshall doesn't have access to internet. If he hasn't got it at home, he can go to the library where internet access is readlily available. If it's something more sinister, he's either gonna have to be prepared for a large phone bill or use some stamps.  :-\\

To be perfectly honest, it's all these stupid threads I'm seeing about anazlying certain years and decades, or topics about "Is this band cheesy" or "this band sucks".  There's a different one like every 5 minutes, and it's driving me crazy.  It's starting to kill my love for the 80's.  If I don't jump ship now, I may lose intrest in 80's music for good  :\'(

Yes, it's a select few who may be ruining for others. I was probably too nice, didn't want to tell them about it, but if you really feel strongly just let them (they know who they are) ease it down a bit. They're not harmful in themselves, but when they start to flood the boards I know it can get irritating.

Most of the analysing decades ones are easy to spot so I just avoid them and complain about them if it starts in another thread.  The 'cheese' threads might disappear soon, I think it's just a phase DD is going through.  Like when a kid learns a new swear word and they have to kepp trying it out.  Use these threads as a place to argue why the poster is wrong in their assessment of a band.

You know I share the same view as you do and have voiced it myself. However, the best form of offence is to simply ignore those threads and continue with the ones you are interested in. Even better, you could make up some threads yourself - I'm sure they would be great to post in.

I have been hearing many people b!tch about all these stupid threads but yet many of these stupid threads have several pages of people saying how stupid they are. My advice is, if you think it is a stupid thread then DON'T POST IN IT!!! Very simple.

To be perfectly honest, it's all these stupid threads I'm seeing about anazlying certain years and decades, or topics about "Is this band cheesy" or "this band sucks".  There's a different one like every 5 minutes, and it's driving me crazy.  It's starting to kill my love for the 80's.  If I don't jump ship now, I may lose intrest in 80's music for good  :\'(

Dude, I always say don't let anyone else ruin anything for you. On a personal level, I haven't chatted with you a whole lot, but just from board posting and stuff, you seem like a pretty cool guy, so I'm gonna join the "don't leave" crowd too. ;)

As far as '80s music is concerned, I absolutely love the "charts/polls" stuff you've done (I thought I knew alot about technical stuff like that, but I freakin' pale in comparison, and I mean that as a compliment!). I've also made some great mixes from your 3-part Top 40 lists for 1980-85 songs (I hope you do '86-89 someday too 8), so just know there ARE people who appreciate your contributions.


Now, for the less pleasant part, I have to ask, why does the Decades/analyzing music stuff annoy people SO MUCH?

I happen to like talking about it too, so I do take it a little personally when people bash it. Maybe I shouldn't, but it's a kneejerk reaction. For a few years, I used to post tons on a couple different Back to the Future message boards (I still do, to a limited extent - I have made some great buddies on there, whom I stay in touch with on AIM, etc).

Well anyway, just because I'm an imaginative guy and like having discussions, many things I'd post about were time travel-ish (i.e. "In Part II if Old Biff went back to anytime before 1955 and made a change in the past, would Marty's initial visit in Part I be affected?"), or just plain hypotheticals ("If Marty and Doc intercepted the cops in 2015" or "What other kind of music did Marty listen to?").

Quite a few of us dug that stuff (albeit to different extents). However, invariably from time to time, when those posts came along, there'd be someone going "It's just a movie, enjoy it and stop analyzing it" etc. So I really got used to "defending" our "right" to talk about that sort of thing. I was always basically articulate and polite, but I'll admit sometimes it p*ssed me off having to say the same stuff over and over. I've been comparitive and imaginative since I was like, 5, so I'm not gonna stop just because it annoys a few people.

I never did this to be some egotistical pr*ck and prove "Oh yeah, I told them!" - actually just the opposite. I wanted to be as objective as possible and hopefully try and make the other person, if not like or agree with what I had to say, at least accept it as well as the validity of the threads being complained about (sometimes it worked, sometimes not). ;D

(My common argument was that, those hypothetical BTTF threads were fun because there was no definitve answer, it's up to everyone's individual thoughts. In a way, the same holds true here - since every person's experience is different, so it's cool to get different ideas from different people about the '80s, etc.)

So yeah I admit, when someone jumps on Donnie for talking about if 1989 was more like 1986 or 1991, perhaps my reaction is a little biased because of my own experiences (IMO he's a pretty cool dude, but even if I didn't have an interest in what he was talking about, I would still tend to defend his -- and others' -- right to discuss decades, etc. Although I guess it doesn't hurt that what he talks about is stuff I tend to enjoy too 8) ).


Point being: let's just agree to disagree at worst, and at best, why can't we all just get along? :)

Another problem I have with it, and it's why I don't participate in them, is that I just don't get how you can compare one year with another.  How I experienced the 80's was as a teenager and the 90's was working, getting married, having children.  So your perceptions and the things that were important to you change over those time scales.  And, frankly, many people find it laughable that people who weren't around at all in the 80s can analyse it in such minute detail.

I agree Karen.  I see nothing wrong with creating a few threads regarding these kinds of topics....but for the love of God, there has to be 100 different threads about the same sorts of things.  Also, it's not just the decades threads that have been out of hand, it's those EMO/hipster/etc.. threads that are getting crazy too. I just don't see why they cannot create ONE EMO thread and then post all they have to talk about (concerning that topic)...in the ONE thread.  It's like there are 10 new threads a day (with the few of them all creating threads like crazy), and they are basically all the SAME.  And, like you mentioned, these are kids...they haven't lived through the 80's, and not even all of the 90's, yet they act like they can analyze AND criticize others (who happen to disagree with them concerning a topic).  Yes, it's easy to ignore a thread and not post in it...but it is NOT easy to ignore 50 of them (that keep burying the substantial threads).  I think it would be a wise thing to have a post restriction regarding creating new topics, because it seems like the majority of people here are tired of dealing with those threads.

Please please please --- don't get me started with that whole "you can't know about/be interested in/like a certain era just because you were born yet" argument. It's not like everyone ONLY likes what was popular when they were 16 and nothing else.

I was born in 1981 and my favorite years for music and overall culture are roughly 1979-1994/95. Let's not go claiming that you have to be born in 1968 to know about the '80s. ;)

Thanks Marty.  I've been meaning to do 1986 through 1989, but now if I did them, they'd be buried on Page 3 within hours.  Someday, I will finish off those Billboard polls :)

What baffles me is how they pass judgements on many things in the 80's, when they don't even know much about the things they discuss.

Every time I start a new topic, it gets buried to Page 2 the next day to make room for more of these threads.  Last night, I surfed the net looking for other 80's boards I could join, but the only other high traffic one out there, is one which I'm not allowed to go back to, so all I got is inthe00s
