About 8 miles, but you have to go on a highway and a dangerous road. Actually, all the roads around here are dangerous because people don't know how to f*cking drive. But yeah.

If that were a necessesity in this day and age it'd be one thing, but its not.
So I take it, (not trying to start an arguement here) that you've decided rather than addressing the hunting issue with facts, you'll just resort to name calling and ignore the real issue??
That tells me one of two things....you either live in some sort of metro suburbia area and are having your young mind polluted and are not getting both sides of the story so you can realize there are 2 sides to the story, or
since there have been a few people in addition to myself on this thread that agree with the principal of hunting, regardless of whether or not they personally hunt, you have not yet learned the ability to admit when you are wrong.
Your commment above about necessity alone proves that you've probably never left the safe warm confines of your little metro area. I'm sure that you have great parents who have provided everything for you. Once you grow up some and get out in the real world on your own, you'll discover if you travel to other areas of this country, that there are places where people need to harvest those animals in order to provide. Not every area of the country has, or can live by your "Alice in Wonderland" ideology.
Personally, I do not need to hunt in order to provide for my family as I am a very successful contractor and make plenty of money to never have to raise a finger or go anywhere except the grocery store for food. However, I believe in conservation far more strongly than I can only guess you ever will, due in part to your foolish attitude toward hunting. I practice conservation in almost every aspect of what I do in nature.
I harvest the animals that need to be harvested, thats already been specified. When I clear trees, I do it both for firewood and to promote growth of remaining trees by thinning out and allowing the correct distance between remaining trees. For every tree I cut down, and this includes those annoying little saplings that choke a forest rapidly if allowed to remain and grow, I plant 2 trees in it's place.
What have you done for the environment today to promote good conservation practices??

that's what I don't understand about people. I mean, if you are this big vegetarian and refuse to NEVER eat meat, etc...than I can see your point in arguing about this...however, if your meals daily consist of meat that someone inevitably had to kill in order for it to end up on your plate....how can one complain so much? Isn't that a bit hypocritical? ???

It's hunting for sport, as opposed to hunting in order to survive. I find what happens in slaughterhouses to be as disgusting as hunting for SPORT.

The meat on your plate almost certainly wasn't shot through the head either.
Let me ask you this. If you were given the option of being shot through the head or forced through a grinder, which would you go for?

shot in the head, most definitely. It's a much more humane way. The animals in the slaughterhouses have to go through torture, while hunted ones, normally don't. ;)

Years ago when my husband and I were first married, we we so completely broke that we were lucky if we had gas for our car (and sometimes I even paid in rolls of pennies), my mother would even send care packages with canned goods to help us out. Going to the grocery store was horrible, I would have to pick the most needed items. If it hadn't been for my husband killing a deer or a turkey or catching fish we would not have had any meat.
These days, we can afford what we want but my husband still hunts and goes fishing. We eat most of what is killed or caught. If we don't eat it, we give it to someone who does.
I went hunting once, I will never go again. Not my thing but I'm not against it as long as it is done legally and the meat is used and not wasted. I think poachers should be arrested and those big game ranches (where they set up hunting trips) are wrong.

Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.
I think a lot of people are missing the point on this.
1. The people who are advocating hunting aren't doing it for sport, they're either doing it to control the population of animals that has grown too big or they want unprocessed fresh meat....except for Davey, I think he's just sadistic. ;D
2. Hunting has been a part of life for thousands and thousands of years. You're not going to change the mentality of man just by protesting that it's "wrong" or "inhumane" or by CALLING PEOPLE NAMES.
3. Why the hell are we still talking about hunting? :D

Some people do it to control the overpopulation. I think that's been touched on before. Even then, I'm sure the meat is eaten. Unless you're talking about hunting for sport and mounting deerheads on the walls. Does anyone know how common that is nowadays? ???

Jessica, absolutely right! Even in circumstances where there is no motivation for the harvesting of deer EXCEPT to reduce the population(usually in metro areas where car deer accidents are far too common), the meat is processed by licensed facilities and is given to the needy or as I stated in an earlier post, many hunters donate their animal of harvest to battered womens shelters, soup kitchens, local Churches, etc.
To listen to "the dude" you'd be inclined to think that all of us hunters are nothing more, as he put it, savages who kill for fun, leave the animals to rot in the woods and then go kill some more. I have no idea what his reasoning(or lack of it) is prompted by, but it's painfully obvious he doesn't have one fact to bring to the table here. Hunters (not poachers, as they are a lowlife class all of their own) are generally the most ethical conservationists you'll ever meet. Our license fees go back into wildlife programs, making the environment a healthier place for all wildlife, so that both human and animals benefit. It promotes education about the environment as well and creates new generations of ethical sportsmen and women.
I can state that I have no heads on my walls, and I have never gone hunting solely for the purpose of taking a "trophy" animal. I do however, have the right in NYS to get as many as 5 permits to harvest deer every year, and I do that and willl continue to do so. 20 years ago, in NYS you were allowed one deer, and could consider yourself lucky if you managed to harvest one. Now, due to overpopulation, (many reasons for this), including mild winters, lack of understanding of the environment by a bigger majority of adults (one of which has posted on here), lack of predators in the deers natural environment, we have way too many. In some ways, the billions of dollars of damage the natural deer herd is causing is as bad if not worse than some of the man made ecological disasters we continually bring upon ourselves.
Besides, venison to myself and many others is far better tasting than beef, so there is another reason to harvest these magnificent animals. I'll tell you a story about "game feeds" some day when we approach that topic......
Thanks to all of you on here who have posted and have been open minded, regardless of whether or not you yourself enjoy hunting!!

I'm sorry for not being open-minded about sadism.
Its not necessary to hunt in order to eat these days. Therefore any hunting is purely for sport, whether or not you eat the meat.

what a treat, which tribute band is this. I've seen Rain & they're excellent. Those Beatles shows are good & the 2 shows I've seen covered the music spanning most of the Beatles careers. have fun Cat

I'm sorry you can't understand my point.
I've said from the beginning its unfortunate how we have to rely on animals for food, and my point is going out and hunting is just killing more of them than necessary for this purpose. There is plenty of beef, poultry, fish etc. available in supermarkets already. Why do you think its right to cause even more death than there is already?

Hunters who provide for their families don't kill more than necessary, they only kill what they are going to use now or in the near future.
And do you have any idea how much of the meat that is available at the grocery store goes to waste?
Yeah, there is plenty of beef, poultry and fish in the stores, but if more people had to provide their own food then maybe we could end some of this...

Well, when the day comes when you become a vegetarian in every meaning of the word, then you can speak out against the death of animals. Since you have a choice in what you eat, and still continue to eat red meat, and I'm also assuming poultry and fish, then your whole basis for arguement is invalid.
Apparently then, the lack of concern for nature and wildlife runs in your family, since you claim your Dad and uncle both have the same feelings for persons who do their part to ensure that wildlife doesn't suffer needlessly.
Just as a final thought, if, as you claim you are aware of the horrors of slaughterhouses and still continue to eat meat, giving slaughterhouses a reason to exist, what exactly does that make you??

Actually, it's NOT about hunting. It's more about conservation practices, damage reaching into the billions of dollars in nature, excessive automobile insurance costs, starvation of an overpopulated species, disease, and most of all hypocrisy.
The topic of this is using hunting as a means of conveyance, but it goes far beyond the act of hunting itself. Individuals who choose to keep it a hunting topic by calling it savage, stupid, foolish, etc, are ignoring the real problem.
The only real problem I have with The Dude is the fact he resorts to name calling rather than challenge anything I've stated with fact, when he indeed is a meat eater himself. Thats hypocritical.

So the point is to clear the trees so that they're spaced farther apart and have more room to grow, right?
Where do the new trees get planted?
What I'm doing is cutting down any "junk" trees, and any that have been either windstorm or ice storm damaged. According to the local timber experts up here, trees (hardwoods) need approximately 13 feet between them in order to get enough sunlight to grow strong and straight. I have some major overgrown hickory trees, but also a lot of maple and oaks.
Firewood is in high demand up here, so not only do I serve to line my pockets with some cash for a fuel source, I promote conservation by eliminating old garbage trees that would otherwise rot and die and replace them with new trees. On the cycle I have the woodlot on, I'll have a harvestable (for lumber) growth of trees every 20 years.
The new trees get planted in a field near my woodlot and also to fill in the excess spaces created by removing the damaged trees. As a side note, the "tops" of the trees I cut down provide a nice little shelter for deer and other wildlife in the winter. I stack them in large long piles and they knock the wind down providing some relief in what can be an otherwise brutal winter....

Thanks!! I'm not a big advocate of cutting down hardwoods and replacing them with soft wood trees...I like to replace with the same thing I've taken down, with the exception of hickories, beechs and birch trees.
Beech trees will flourish in almost any condition up here, they are the majority of the saplings I remove daily, usually numbering in the hundreds....

that's a lot of work. I've done some of that when i was younger, but back then we were lucky to get $35 a cord for either oak or almond. I prefer almond for firewood because the fire colors are quite striking and when seasoned right, it burns very nicely and easily, however my fireplace isn't too big so we just throw in a duraflame and while it doesn't heat as well as firewood, it provides some warmth & comfort. It sounds like a wide variety of trees on your area. i've got three birch trees, and a couple of maple in my backyard that are beautiful and dropping a million leaves for me to pick up.

Have never burned almond, but I know metro dwellers prefer birch because of the flame colors, and ironwood (actually classified as a weed) because of the flame colors as well. Hickory will burn with a blue flame as opposed to yellow/orange, and has a remarkable capability of being burned green...you can cut it today and burn it tonight if you desire...if you ever get a batch of hickory to burn, be forewarned on this stuff. It burns extremely hot and "damping down" the fire when it starts appearing to be too hot will be futile...

Ethics are subjective. The fact is, as has been pointed out before (sigh) that without direct human intervention, the cute cuddly deer overpopulate and starve and die, which unfortunately (sigh) you've decided to ignore. So sad.

But right now I'm running back and forth cleaning up stuff and drinking whisky and listening to my friend's radio show.

I got the Christmas tree up and the lights on, I don't know what happened to the garland and christmas bulbs (maybe the tree ate them sometime during the year). I guess I'll have to go buy some more, although it's kinda pretty with just the strings of lights on it.
In the process of drying my second load of laundry. The dryer in our apartment complex sucks big time. I had to dry it for 2 hours to finally get it done. Just put another load in the dryer. The rules say that you are supposed to have all laundry done by 10 p.m. but I can't help it if their dryer doesn't work. ::) I might just run them to a laundromat later to dry them. I don't want to be up all night drying clothes. I still have two loads to dry which obvisously aren't gonna dry by 10 p.m. Oh well.

Well then, today I've not really done much of anything apart from watch movies and feel sorry for myself. ;D
Yesterday however was a looong busy day, which is why I think is a big contributing factor as to why I feel so crappy today.
It was the wedding of two of my best friends.. a great day, I took a shed load of drugs (nothing illegal) and tried my best to feel good. Me and my bro played a set at the grooms request, 7 songs in all, even with tonsilitis I don't think I sounded too bad.
Because I was part of the wedding party I had my drinks paid for me... big mistake.. to avoid feeling even worse today I just suck to the Guinness all night, but I put away about 15 pints in all.. and.. probably half a bottle of champagne. Still, it was medicinal. ;D
Beautiful wedding but by the end I was very grouchy.. got to sleep around 3 and woke up at about 5. :( I've not worked for almost a week due to a combination of bad weather and a small amount of work to do.. now I have this. It's a good thing I own part of the company or I'd be going down to the shelter for my soup. ;D

I agree that the last Hugh was the worst. What kind of bothers me about the shows is when they have Hugh & Cadfael arguing and they never really did in the books. They ALWAYS got along and even if they did disagree with other, there was never any anamosity between them (like St. Peter's Fair-one of my least favorites of the shows-the book was SOOOOO much better).

great short week is right!
yeah i live about ...ok. 7 miles away. and it takes me 20 minutes by car. there is really only one main road to my office and it's always crowded with express bussses
If I started at 9am it would take me 45-50min but the traffic has thinned out by my commute time and there will be less cars on the road with people leaving for the Holidays.

Cat
I know it was dreadful compared to the book! I think it's a bit like they did with the Poirot T.V series, alot of what you read is his thought process which wouldn't work on T.V. So they have to give the main character a sounding board questioming what he's doing so that his reasoning can be seen and understood.

I've just been watching some filming for the film of the Philip Pullman his dark materials trilogy. I can't remember what it's called but Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig are in it.

Right now, nothing. However when my sister gets back from her afternoon class, we're having Subway for lunch and then I'll probably end up cleaning the bathroom. Or something like that.

Like Davey says, that's construction. I'm not an office worker, or factory worker where this would be much more devastating. I get my money then call the business agents and/or go to the union hall and hope something comes up. This has been a rocky year, but I plan for this sort of thing.

In my opinion it's a great way to do things. Most of the year I'll make better money than anybody I know.. but ya know, there'll be 8-10 weeks a year with no work. Hey - great, it all works out. I end up earning as much as most folks, but with way more time off to spend with friends, family... whatever one does in their spare time.

Too true. To me layoff = vacation. I make great money when I'm working, and as long as I get 1100 hours work a year I get my benefits for the following year. I don't know many who have the package that I do, and none non-union. Health, Dental, Eyeglasses, Pension(fully funded and guaranteed), and Annuity.

There are exceptions to your comment, although in the majority of the cases you are absolutely right. When I worked for a commercial outfit (non-union), I had all the bennies you had listed plus did not have any union dues to contend with.
We did mostly jobs involving state and federal monies, so prevailing wage was paid to all employees and routinely checked by turning in
"certified payroll" sheets. Our fringes went into a 401K account of our choice and was planned that way for retirement due to the lack of unions up this way.
The St Lawrence Seaway project ruined the trade unions up here. While it was being constructed, the unions hired anybody they could get their hands on, and after the project was completed there were NO jobs available, hence a lot of union members who had paid into the system and got locked out in the cold. The wounds ran deep and still haven't healed in many cases.
Right now, Ft Drum has pulled a fast one with the expansion up here, they're created a special wage bracket for carpenters, and the scale wage is under 13 an hour, no fringes. Talked to a superintendent up there a few weeks ago, and they can't get carpenters, they're getting Pizza Hut, KFC, Wal-Mart employees who've never worked outside(especially in winter) and don't know a speed square from a 2x4, but they can't get experienced carpenters because of the low wages being paid.....
Good luck with the trip to the union hall, I mean that with all sincerity, I hope they have something available for you.

Massachusetts is pretty much a union state, we have prevailing wage, but the unions did become bloated with workers during the Big Dig. Alot of out-of-towners were let in, too, and decided to stay. The problem is that to many come in for the rate without understanding the whys and wherefores of unions and the reasons we have the rules we have. Greed abounds. Jobs are tight right now and some are grumbling. During the Dig there were lots of jobs and lots of overtime, they overspent during the good years, now they blame the union for not getting them the same kind of jobs, actually get mad because they get 40 hours a week. No sympathy there from me. They were told "If you can't afford it on an unemployment check, you can't afford it" Too, true.
Our benefits are administered by the local, not by the individual companies, and by law have to be fully funded so we are pretty well set up, we don't have to worry about an Enron type of debacle, everything is overseen by (hopefully) reputable outside firm. So far my retirement is looking real good. :)

It's a lot more common than people think. You should see your doctor because there are things that can really help. Good luck to you!
Right now I am working. Afterwards I have to go to our cable company and exchange our remote because it isn't working. Then I am going to go and help my sister in her floral shop, and after that go grocery shopping for Thanksgiving. This year I'm making the stuffing and a pistachio salad.

If you truly have SAD the best thing to do is not to stay inside. They say a big problem is the fact that with the cold weather people tend to stay in and that exacerbates the problem. Corny as it may sound a brisk half hour walk during the daytime is one of the best things you can do.

It's only a 3 hour dive but I don't get "back home" NEAR as often as I should. I was raised by my Grandparents on a farm and it's really great when we go back and stay for a while. I'm working now, then a few errands, and tonight I'll be cooking. I am making the stuffing for tomorrow and a pistachio salad. I went grocery shopping last night and bought three loaves of bread. I also had french bread and bagels, so the girl who was bagging my order commented on all of it. I told her I was making stuffing, and she looked at me kind of blankly and asked me what I meant. After I explained it all to her, she said "I didn't know you could make it. I just thought it came in a box." Oh the horror! There is nothing better than homemade stuffing!
