I went to the orthopedist to get the results of the MRI on my knee.  All will be well....no surgery needed....I can dump the crutches.  It will take about three months for full healing, but I can walk and drive my car and do low-impact exercise.  Hooray.  Tonight I'll probably do lots of laundry now that I can walk down the stairs in my house to the laundry room  ::)

My parents and I took my grandma and great-aunt out for a birthday lunch at the Smokehouse restaurant in Burbank. My grandma will be 85 on Wednesday; my great-aunt turned 83 this past Tuesday...so it was kind of a "double birthday celebration" in a sense.

hey Jeff, I was wondering who was gonna get curious?  I went to the post office, whoo!!! exciting  :D I came home and made a pot of beans because I like em once in awhile, and a simple pot of pinto beans can be so good when made right. maybe a few crackers or a tortilla with them. I took my daughter Julie to a birthday party.  and came home and hung out with my wife a bit. now hanging out with you  :)  how about you. That lunch at the smokehouse sounded good. Is it a BBQ type restaurant? and so nice to take your grandmother & G-Aunt. I'm sure they loved it.

Smokehouse...I wouldn't exactly say barbecue. They serve various entrees consisting of chicken, turkey, steak, and seafood. The place has been in business for 60 years and is located very close to the WB Studios. My mom went to the restaurant a lot when she was growing up in the 50's and 60's.

Edit: You can find out info about the place on their official web site, which is here.

I went out to pick up my daughter from yet another birthday party. That kid goes to more parties, she's quite the socialite. I told her if she drove or got a ride, she had to be home by 10pm, but if I took her and she got a ride home from me, then she could stay out until 12am. she called at 10:30pm and asked me to pick her up at 11pm. I felt good about my parenting tonight.

I love homemade italian food; in fact, my mom cooks it very well (she's half italian). :) So we don't need to go to a restaurant to enjoy great italian food (that is, unless we're too lazy to cook it ourselves or we don't have the time).

Oh my god, you have no idea how much I miss edible seafood. The stuff over here looks like it's been sitting in a freezer for the better part of a year. :P

See, when I lived in California, I was spoiled. My dad was a fisherman. We also had one of the best fish markets in California at our disposal. Now I'm relegated to eating tuna or clam chowder out of a can.

And I need to get up off my butt and cook at some point. Nothing good like what you'll be making. :D

dad's cooking can't be beat. that's a nice compliment to him. I think my wife and daughter were thinking that sme thing after last nights dinner of pan grilled salmon filets and scallops. It rocked!  I only remember eating seafood at one place at the Monterey wharf and I think it was called The Whaler and I had the best cioppino there.

Went up to Salibury Beach, played in the arcade, went in the water, sat in the beach chair under the 'brella, got some "homemade" chocolate covered jellies.  Life the way it should be. :)

Too funny. I know you usually play Texas Hold 'Em. But (like I said in the other thread) I prefer 7 card, deuces wild-or even better-BASEBALL!!  ;D ;D  (I am assuming you know how to play Baseball-in terms of poker.)

the trophies are cute, and Texas Hold 'Em is the only poker game we play when we play for money. I don't remember how to play baseball. My other friends like to play dealers choice, change up the games thruout the night, but I personally don't care to.

...tonight we went to Claim Jumper, had dinner,I had chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, gravy & biscuit. Needless to say it Rocked! Came home, played some CDs, LadyDi got some nice gifts, had chocolate cake & lemon cream pie for dessert & played cards. Everyone left, wife & daughter went to bed & now I'm here.

Happy to say that last night was a rousing success...

The "Samurai Sausalito" is a regular stop when we visit Marin county.  Can you say "fresh fish"..?  I may have embarrassed our party when I broke down clapping my hands and shouting the, "fre-e-e-sh fish, fre-e-e-sh fish..!" line from Shawshank Redemption, as they served the appetizer...

The shiro maguro melts in your mouth, the amaebi is mesmerizing and their special rolls are inventive (try wrapped in kelp, not seaweed...) with a little sesame cream on top..!

Drinks at the "No Name Bar" afterward, then home for some naked twister groove ;) on...

How was Lady Di's royal birthday bash..?

I am going to have to visit The "Samurai Sausalito" real soon as it sounds great. I know my wife & daughter would love it. I would have enjoyed your *fresh fish* comment as that is one of my favorite films also, however I wouldn't want the chef to feel insulted  ;D .  Naked twister?  :o Holy Crap, you guys know how to party  ;D  Lady Di's ongoing birthday dinner was great. Went to Claim Jumper in Concord, got there early, to avoid the big dinner rush & got seated right away, the food was excellent, they brought her a nice birthday treat with a candle, & then we came home with dessert from the reataurant, their Mother Lode 7layer chocolate cake and a lemon pir, she got nice gifts from her friends, we lit candles & sang HBD to her, then I cranked up The Beatles version of birthday. it was a good night, except we didn't get into a game of nude twister.

Today (Monday) I haven't done much except for hang out at home, eat, do some laundry, etc. Later on I will be going to my swing dance class (yes, I've recently started taking dance lessons). I have a lot of fun there; the instructor is a nice lady and she seems like a good teacher. My parents started taking dance classes at this particular dance studio half a year ago and enjoy it...so a few months ago I decided to give it a try by attending a couple of workshops. You don't need a partner to attend the class; all the guys dance with all the ladies, so it works out great.

I already did look online. The campus bookstore's website tells you the prices for all the books, new and used. In fact, I always look online every semester to see which books I need for each of my classes. I select the subjects, class numbers, and section numbers...and it tells me the list of books I need for the particular course...and how much they cost.

I still have to buy them in person.

DO NOT buy your books from the campus bookstore.  That is the biggest mistake most college students make.  They mark those books up ridiculously high.  One semester I bought all my books from the campus bookstore and ended up paying close to $700 for all of them.  Next semester, I bought them through a combination of Amazon.com and Half.com and paid about $200 for all of them.  All of the books were brand-new, shrink-wrapped and shipped to me 2 days after I placed the order.  That's about $500 I saved myself right there.  A lot of people turn around and sell the book online for about what they paid, so you can make all that money back.  That's what I did so I'd have money in my pocket at the end of the year.

And most campus bookstores will ship the books to your home, so you don't necessarily have to go there and buy them.

I use to buy my books from the campus bookstore because my school didn't offer a list of books online that I'd need until I actually went to the bookstore and got assistance (plus, sometimes you'd have a good chance of buying a used one, so you could save money there), and that would be too close to the time classes would begin. Luckily, I was taking no more than 2-3 classes per semester, so if I got lucky each class maybe only needed a $70 book per class, so I wasn't totally out the bucks. Yet, I did need to get Medical coding books which were very expensive, so I bought those on Ebay and Half.com and saved a good load of money.

Well, I've never had to pay $700 for textbooks. That's not an issue to me. Besides, the used books are cheaper than the new ones. I think the most I paid for a semester's worth of textbooks was somewhere in the $300 to $400 range.

And at the Matador Bookstore, I don't think it makes a difference (pricewise) if you buy 'em there or have 'em shipped.

I know used are cheaper than new.  But you can't always get used books, and you have to buy the new books.  And $400 is too much to be spending on books you'll only use for 15 weeks and then turn around and sell again.  Seriously, Amazon.com and Half.com....that's the way to go.  As long as you know the book title/author, you can find them online for a hell of a lot cheaper.  You shouldn't be paying more than $200-250 for your books.  And sometimes, that includes shipping.

My friends would give me their book lists before the semester started and I'd find the books for them online 75% cheaper than they would have paid at the bookstore.  AND you're guaranteed to get them before the semester starts AND you don't have to stand around in the bookstore for hours waiting to pay.

Do you need to register an account to purchase from Amazon.com or Half.com (or any of those sites)? I'm guessing you probably do. Even if I did, heaven knows how long it would take for them to get here. And with the shipping and handling, that might be worth more. :-\\

You do need to register an account to purchase from those two websites, but it's free and takes like 2 minutes.  And I live in Georgia and the most I've had to wait for a book to get to me is 3 days.  I always pick Expedited Shipping so it gets here real fast.  Have you never bought anything from Amazon.com?  I buy CDs, books, DVDs, stuff like that, so I've had an account with them for close to 5 years now.  Half.com is an off-shoot of Ebay and it takes all of 2 minutes to register an account there as well.  Georgia State has a website for their bookstore, but the prices you pay online are the same you'd pay if you went into the bookstore and physically got your books.

I've never had a problem ordering anything from Amazon, so if that's where she got it from, don't let that deter you from using their site.  There's a lot of ways college students can save money, and this is definitely one of them.

Ordering books is okay through Amazon.com, but sometimes they will notify you if it's in stock or not and the estimated time it will take - so take that into consideration. I once ordered Meet Joe Black and it never got to me after 2-3 months! So, I just canceled the order.

Also, if you purchase through private sellers, sometimes that's an even better way. Just investigate a lot and make sure they have good ratings and positive reviews. I had about 3 differents books sent to me from private sellers and they all got to me in great time and for great prices, too.

That's another consideration I have with ordering books (or anything) online. I still plan on just picking up the book in person when I go to campus again. It's just one book... and for the four books that I did get on Tuesday, I only paid a total of $128 for them.

I volunteered and went right to the bank to cash my check

Yeah, if you have an address at work or with a neighbor who's usually home and trustworthy, mail it to them...I ordered a wireless keyboard and mouse set from Overstock and Jess was home all day but the UPS guy still allegedly delivered it to one of our (maybe) shady neighbors who signed rather poorly and we have no idea what happened.  Overstock was cool and gave me my $$ back though.
