Anyway, many stations around here are now 4+ per gal. all grades.

I did hear on the radio the market might be peaking.  I can dream can't I?

For once I'm going to have to come over to your side. Right now supply is meeting demand easily yet by simply posturing that the price will increase, the thieves on wall street are enabling to go higher, for once, Market sanctions might be a thought.

As of today, it's $3.89 a gallon.  :(

I've read some articles about gas thieves and how they're drilling holes into the gas tanks of other people's vehicles. Now there's something else to worry about.  :(

Theives, schmieves.

March 08/March07 gasoline consumption shows the largest year-over-year decline in 30+ years.

Perhaps $4.00/gallon (USD/USGal) is the tipping point at which US consumers stop buying and start walking, biking, carpooling, swallowing their pride and taking the bus, or moving closer to where they work.

I don't enjoy $4.00/gallon any more than any other American.  But I'm seriously impressed the geeks who've reverse-engineered their Priuses and developed techniques like "pulse-glide" and "warp stealth".  A skilled driver can get 70-80 MPG out of a stock Prius.  An unskilled driver gets 50 MPG.  And neither driver need be an obstacle to traffic.  My inner gamer geek thinks that "hypermiling" sounds like fun, and my inner engineering geek thinks that "hypermiling" is going to be the 21st century's version of "hot rodding".

There are numerous do-it-yourself conversions for hybrid vehicles that enable them to be recharged by plugging them into the wall socket overnight (thereby using the off-peak-hours, and thus cheapest, electricity that your local utility company can generate), for costs that, even at a mere $3.00/gallon for gasoline, can deliver miles-per-dollar (which is what we really care about) well over the 100-miles-per-gallon mark even for the most unskilled driver.

Necessity is the mother of invention.  (Corollary: Necessity?  She's a mother.)  But that's how free markets work.  The 1970s featured Chrysler's Cordoba (with Rich Corinthian Leather) and upstart Honda's 50MPG "Civic" CVCC technology.  Over the next 10 years, Honda utterly destroyed the Big Three.  But looking at what's under the hood of cars today, is that so bad?  We've got 70s mileage, but we've got 500 horsepower under the hood.  Or we've got 70s CVCC mileage out of four cylinders and the acceleration of a V8.

It's Malaise 2.0.  Who knows what sorts of technological advances will be in the vehicles we'll be driving 10 years from now?  I love my gas guzzler, but within my lifetime (maybe within 10 years), I'm going to have to order fuel for it online.  One day a month I get to turn gasoline into CO2 and noise, but if the Tesla Roadster and whoever makes the Aptera are any indication of what's in store for body styling, and the Prius hackers are any indication of what's in store for shadetree mechanics/hackers, the other 29 days of the month sound like fun too.

(Gas thieves?  LOL!  My car's so old it still has a locking gas cap, and it shipped that way from the factory!)

Well, so much for $3.85. The station that was at $3.85 yesterday upped the price, but they were in the midst of changing it, so all I know is that it's 3 ninety-something. I'm betting it'll be $3.99.

I'll edit tomorrow morning.

Edit: Close, 3.95... great.

Heck, out here there might be more folks using public transportation, such as the train. I know ridership out here has certainly gone up in recent times.

The oil companies are not the free market, they're an international fascist cartel.  Mmmmmkay?

And the reason nukes work so well in France is not because it's cheap---it's anything but--rather because it's a government-controlled socialist system, not-for-profit, in the interests of the state and the people.

I am pessimistic about big business and/or big government saving our sorry asses now.

I concur.  I saw an article on Bloomberg last week in which an oil executive said that oil should be priced at $65 per barrell instead of the current $130 per barrell.  They blamed Wall Street for increasing price and demand by buying alot of oil futures.

Its rather annoying.  MOST of the US oil comes from Venezuela, which is crazy because Chavez is a lunatic.  However,  if there is a small fight in Nigeria - price goes up. If it rains in Japan - price goes up.  There are ALWAYS ridiculous excuses to increase the price of oil/gas.

As of today, regular unleaded was at $3.85 here in Kansas City.

However, tonight we had a wave of thunderstorms pass through the area, and a bolt of lighting hit a giant tank full of 58,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline at a fuel terminal here in town, causing a massive explosion.  I drove near it after work and could still see huge fireballs shooting out of it.

So I wouldn't be surprised if regular unleaded shoots to well over $4 a gallon tomorrow.  :-\\

Damn... good thing no one was hurt, but that sucks. Waste of gas. You're lucky though, barring the fact that you probably will hit over $4 because of this, that's some of the cheapest gas in the country. My area is a little above that.

I have a different philosophy now: I try to find the most expensive gas station I can and fill up. Why? Because my a-hole boss enjoys not paying me on time and tries to dick me on labor. So, I enjoy finding the most expensive gas I can so he can eat a big fat gas bill when he pays me.

Guess they don't need our business anymore?

If they do anymore commercials, they should just show the station sign and play the song 'HIGHER AND HIGHER' under it.

Let's all build underground and 'air' can transport us up and down to various levels and..er.....um...(I GOTTA GO WRITE A MOVIE....BYE!)

A recent article in our local paper interviewed a gas attendant at a local station. He said that even though the prices are sky high...there are some people (especially the elderly) still who come in and ask for $1 or $2 worth of gas. He even said that an elderly gentleman came in with a $5 bill. He bought a pack of cigarettes, and there was like 45 cents left over. He asked to put it toward gas. :o

Also..AAA and other towing companies have stated that the number of tows have severely increased, as people are running out of gas because they just don't have the money to put toward gas for their car.

How sad. :-\\

Actually, gas station owners are making minmal profit if not breaking even... almost their entire profit these days comes from other purchases.

Since we are on InThe00s... let me say, the '00s are turning out to be a terrible decade. It started out strong but after 9/11, it all went downhill. And this is one of many, many reasons. I can't afford this anymore. I'm seriously considering the possibility that I may have to sell my car and not drive anymore. And I live in a suburb. 'Cause now we're all gonna start having to struggle paying for groceries as well soon (mainly because of gas prices, by the way).

All those stations I posted before having dropped, jumped up again - $3.95 is the lowest price.

$4.00 mark is receding into the dust and the sunset.  Some expert said $4.15/gal. was about the max-out point, but prices would continue to remain high.  Yet, the very next day, many stations around here broke the $4.40 barrier.

Who knows WTF kind of s---t is going to go down around here!

Remember the Joads?  They pieced together junk automobiles and headed west from the dustbowl.  This time around, people are going to traveling down the Interstates in drought-horse wagons!

I really feel for some of you guys, with $4.40 - 4.55 in your areas... I mean it's 3.99 here and I'm still struggling.

This sucks. I hate when the Europeans complain about how we complain - you know, theirs is taxed that high. Ours is just BS, so we have the right to complain. The money is going into pockets, not towards anything worthwhile.

Taxes and the fact that to even get the oil it has to travel further. That and also doesn't California have tougher laws regarding what can and can't go in to gasoline and emissions etc?

As for drilling, the oil companies don't even drill wells at all the places they're already approved to do so.  This is purely anti-democratic.

That's retarded. So anybody wanting to use it to go to work is then stuck.. well, they can pay but it sort of defeats the purpose.

I just got an e-mail from my congressman Russ Carnahan (the guy who took over from Dick Gephart - We elect well in South Saint Louis). Anyway, his basic gist was - Give it 6 months and we're going to pass a whole bunch of renewable energy bills as well as, wait 6 months for the shift from the Strategic Oil reserve, the same thing that happened in 2000 when the price dropped a third in the space of a couple of months.

Basic thing still is that this is not a supply - demand issue. Supply is easily meeting demand. It wont forever, but right now it is, this is an artificial price increase and the bubble will pop, we all saw what happened with the 'sub-prime' loan business right?

apparently it's less like the sub-prime bubble and more like the enron thing in california from back in 1999, 2000. it may backfire on the oil companies if everyone sells their SUVs and gets subcompacts and moves closer to public transportation and the oil companies are looking at a long-term permanent reduction in demand.

Just remember, the market can remain irrational far longer than you or I can remain solvent.

Still, you've got the right idea.  The market doesn't reward people for being on the long side or the short side of a trade.  The market rewards people for being on the right side of a trade.  The oil bubble will burst when the last agonized bystander finally throws in the towel and says "I give up, I've gotta get on the bandwagon before we hit $100 (oops) $150, $200, $300, or $1000/bbl".

(It's all my fault.  I didn't buy any oil stocks over the past year, and boy, are my numbers showing the pain. :)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER:

Years ago gas stations gave out gifts, i.e. team drinking glasses(which later proved to contain lead paint and had to be tossed),maybe a mascot doll, flag,or sticker of their company logo.

I would think this was provided by the GASOLINE COMPANY, or at a minimal charge to the owner for your constant patronage of his station...or the brand.

So, are we to assume the BILLION$ making companies could care less of the consumer?- as they have not(or I haven't), seen any 'thank you gifts' for a long time!

They just take our money and run.

So now we know who we are dealing with!

Here in Saint Louis, at a few stations (especially Phillips 66) if you buy 10 Gallons they give you a ticket for a buy one get one free baseball deal. I thought it was a great offer until I realized that you only have a chance at getting the buy one get one offer, there are loads of additional crap prizes.. but still, it's something.

It was $4.29 and easily at least 25 cents higher than any other station (and always has been) and overnight one night it dropped to $3.95. Now it's $3.94.

And one of the local brand stations converted to a Gulf the other day... the little businesses can't make it anymore I guess.

Heck, even as early as 1999 or 2000, people were complaining about $2 gas.

It's gotten to the point now where $2 for a gallon of gas would be considered super-cheap!

My fun crazy gas station has dropped down to 4.79 for regular unleaded.  Mike would pay 4.99 if he tanked here.  ;D

I have a theory... Perhaps the gas prices went as high as they did to test the population and see just how much people were willing to pay for fuel.  And now that they've dropped the price only to make us think we're paying less but really we're paying more than we were when prices first started to rise however, we're so happy that we're not paying what we were last month that no one is complaining about the current cost.... plus in a few months or a year they know just how high they can raise gas again.

...... or it could be bunnies  ;D    (anyone who gets this obscure reference has my undying loyalty)

Just filled up for $2.67 a gallon - if I would have wanted to wait in line I could have got gas at $2.59 - I had the 2 little ones in the car and they needed supper -so no go.

Cheap stations in Saint Louis are around $2.69 and down around Ozark it's about $2.40.

In Chicago yesterday saw it at almost $4.20 on a station off Lake Shore drive, that's damn near $2.00 more.

Sounds like attempted-gouging.  Maybe the dude figures people are so used to paying $4.20 now, they won't know the difference and I'll skim a little off the top!

It's a cost-benefit analysis.  Just don't fill up a tank of $3.85 gas to go buy a tanks of $2.93 gas only to have till fill up with $3.85 gas all over again.

Paid $2.25 this morning. I'm hoping it might actually drop below $2.00 sometime this year, but I'm not sure it will happen.

Still above $4 here.  $4.05 and it just dropped a couple of days ago.

I can't even remember when gas was just above $2 a gallon.

I can't even remember when gas was just above $2 a gallon.

I seem to remember it at that level in 2001-02. Since 2003 or so, it's always been above $2, at least here in CA.

Edit: I just read through the first few pages of this thread and saw that some folks had prices under $2 back in 2004, but in CA it was hovering around that mark. By about 2005 or so, it was above $2 for good...or so it seems.

wow that is cheap

sure is...compared to what we're used to paying these days

It still has yet to drop under $3 a gallon in southern California, but I'm not holding my breath.

It's sort of hit a level here in Saint Louis, anywhere from $2.50 - $2.70. I filled up for $2.53 today. It's dropping maybe 3-4 cents a week I would say, but not much faster. However, in Southern Illinois it's down in the $2.70's which means soon the price gouge alarms will sound on the MO side and the prices will drop even more. (For those who don't know, gas is always about 25 cents more in Illinois due to taxes, so if it's the same price in Missouri as it is in Illinois then the complaints begin - give it a week until a station hits $2.69 on the IL side.)

I drove past my crazy gas station it finally dropped to 3.39  ::)

My gas station was $2.89 this morning but I was late for work so on my way home I tanked somewhere that was also $2.89 only to find that my station had dropped to $2.79 while I was at work.  sure I would've saved only a $1.30 but its the principal!
