On Monday I drove past my usual gas station where the price was 3.25 to fill at the cheapest station 3.17 only to pass my favorite corner where gas was still high 3.57. That's a 40cent difference from cheapest to highest in less than 3 miles

Last night when I was coming home, I finally saw a gasoline price less than $3/gal!!

But it was only $2.99.

...came down another two cents each of the past two days. O0

For us it seems to just go up.  It is at its record high at the moment at $3.49.  Totally outrageous.  >:(

cheapest in my expensive town is $3.09 but you really have to drive to find it... we average $3.13.  The only reason I mention it is because $3.09 is the cheapest but that crazy block has three gas stations with gas $3.54.  BTW this is for regular unleaded.

That's in St. Louis, in Illinois it's only $2.76.

Between $2.70 and $2.90 here 8)

It sure is a relief to not have to pay $3 or more for a gallon of gas anymore. (At least for now, that is.)

After looking at the beginning of this topic, I'm wishing gas prices were that low again (although they were high at that time in '04)... Yeah, the cheapeast I've seen it around here lately was $2.65/gallon, the highest around $2.85... Southeastern Massachusetts.

It was $2.65 for regular unleaded the last time I filled up my gas tank (last Friday). I found an old gas receipt from about 4 or 5 years ago that said $1.59/gallon and I spent $9.00. I thought back then $1.59 a gallon was outrageous! Ahhhh, the good ol' days.......

It's pretty much stayed at or around $2.50 here in St. Louis for nearly a month now.

Even in Illinois it's only gotten up to about $2.75. Not bad really.

Last week I was filling up for $2.75/gallon (Greenfield, MA), and cursing it as "highway robbery."  I could have filled up down in Hadley for $2.55, but I was so close to dead empty I was afraid I might not make it!  This week the cheapest I can find is up the road from my house at $2.67/gallon.  $0.80 less than what you paid.

I know where those communities are, having grown up in the L.A. area. It's around 3 1/2 bucks per gallon all over. I'm just glad I don't need to drive to where I need to go every day; I take public transportation. Basically, I've only been driving from my house to the train station, and back. That's about 3 or 4 miles round-trip.

The reason the US gets a lower price is because of the amounts we buy.  Huge huge amounts, so we get a break on the price. We also are able to produce some of our own.

Actually, I think the main reason that gasoline prices are higher in Europe than they are in the United States is that fuel taxes there are much greater:

Correct, most European countries currently pay about $93 a barrel whereas in the U.S the cost is closer to $98 a barrel.

.. and Henk, I know Holland is more expensive for fuel than the U.K and when i did the math last time I was there it was the equivalent of $8.00 a gallon so I assume you're getting your U.S measurements confused. I would hazard a guess that you pay about $9.00 a gallon, or three times what we pay on average.

I'm not sure why you think I've got my measurements confused. According to my calculations, we pay about $7.93 a gallon. Why do you think it would be even more than that? ???

According to my information, one liter equals 0.264172052 gallons (US, liquid) and EUR 1 equals $1.46675 (today's rate). Now if I'm wrong about this, so is online conversion.

When the gas prices started going up at the beginning of the Bush administration, I was very angry because I knew it was going up only to make Dubya & his oil buddies rich. There isn't a shortage of oil at this time and actually the demand for oil is down-so why are we paying more? I'll let you figure that one out. But, as the prices go up and up and up, I realize that this could be a very good thing. Why? Because more and more people don't want to pay $3 or more for a gallon of gas so they are starting to look for alternatives. I have been hearing about cars running on biofuels, and more hybrids are being made/sold. Even Detroit is looking into making cars that run on something other than petroleum. Kind of ironic isn't it. Here Dubya had been trying to help his oil buddies out and it just may be the start of the end for  big-time oil.

Not only that, but Congress voted to raise the levels of what cars get in regard to gas mileage. Of course, Dubya will veto it, which will tell everyone all that need to know about him, but I dare say it'll be forced through.

Capitalism without competition is fascism.  It's time to use anti-trust legislation to break up the oil cartels.  Of course Congress can't do that because the oil cartels own congress.  Eisenhower warned us about this crap in 1961.  Nope.  Congress can make it impossible for you to file for bankruptcy when you're flat broke, but they can't help you save a buck on a gallon of gas.  What can I say?  Congress doesn't represent the people, so how can I begrudge people for not voting?

Prices here (I hope) topped out at $3.11 for the cheap stuff this fall.  I never paid more than $3.05 for the 87 grade.  I mean, that's all I buy.  I don't look at the premium grade any more than I look at the wristwatches at Tiffany's.

It was up to 3.24, then down to 3.14, then down to 2.97, then down to 2.93 which is what I paid yesterday before coming to the lake.  It was 2.90 in Hesperia (what I consider the halfway mark, even though it is closer to BR than SL).  I went into Hart today and it was 2.78.  However, I saw a station that had 2.89, so that might be what it is when I go to fill up on our way home tomorrow.

Shell is consistently the most expensive petrol station here.  There are two I regularly drive past.  One is always 5 cents a gallon more than anywhere else, the other is always about 10 cents more.

Last time I posted gas was around $3.03, now it's $2.91.  Hess and Sunoco are the cheapest around here, and they're right across the street from each other on the main street in my town, and are always competing. Hess will drop a few cents overnight, a day or two later Sunoco will follow. Exxon, of course, is the most expensive around here, it's still over $3.

The Hess station up the street is the cheapest nearby me.  It dipped to $2.87 this week, but now it's creeping back up at $2.89 for 87 grade.  I predict a $.50+ hike by Memorial Day.  They'll find a reason. It's Dubya's last year in office.

Its weird, not more than three weeks ago, local so cal (Long Beach/Anaheim) gas had dropped to $2.87. Lately the price has shot back up to $3.19 to $3.30 (Irvine) with no real reason why?

I know there has been some instability in Africa, and threats by OPEC to cut back on production and so on, but the supply of crude has actually INCREASED over the last four months. There is more of a surplus of gasoline now than there has been in the last year, so why the jump in $$?  ???

Gas Prices Near Record; Oil Hits $107 By JOHN WILEN, AP Business Writer
31 minutes ago

NEW YORK - Gasoline prices were poised Monday to set a new record at the pump, having surged to within half a cent of their record high of $3.227 a gallon. Oil prices, meanwhile, surged to $107, a new inflation-adjusted record and their fifth new high in the last six sessions on an upbeat report on wholesale inventories.

The national average price of a gallon of gas rose 0.7 cent overnight to $3.222 a gallon, 69 cents higher than one year ago, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. Last May, prices peaked at $3.227 as surging demand and a string of refinery outages raised concerns about supplies.

it's gonna go way up because of summer coming and because of what bernanke is doing with interest rates to help bail out the rich bankers. when interest rates go down, the dollar sinks and the low value of the dollar is the major reason for gas prices being where they are.

I used to live a mile from work and would actually ride a bike with gas the way it is unfortunately I live more than 15 miles from work  and most of it is up hilly because the only apartment available to me was in the mountainous area of Santa Barbara.  Believe me I never would've chosen to live here...

I'm in no doubts that you would choose to live there. Regardless of that, I'm not even talking about the 30 mile round trips.. that's not so bad. I'm talking about the folks that live way the hell out in the burby-burbs, just so they can have a 12 bedroom house or whatever it is that attracts them to those desolate hell holes.

yeah it's a  pretty good time. i drive a few miles back and forth each way to the metro, i dont suffer too bad. but i chuckle at the guys with the lincoln navigators and the F-150s. like, you just had to keep up with the joneses, didnt ya? and now you got this gas-guzzling burning tire around your neck. ;D

of course the effect on food prices isn't so funny. i like food, i'd hate to have to quit eating it.

But the effect on food prices isn't so bad. I've noticed almost no increase in my grocery bill.. when it really kicks in, hey fair enough, it'll suck. But there's a big difference between an extra $10 at the grocery store and $4.00 a gallon with a 14MPG truck... and the really funny thing is, most of the guys that NEED trucks are the kind of guys who can afford to run them.. ya know, plumbers, contractors etc.  ;D It just makes me laugh.

Well No, I doubt high gas prices will ever negate a saving of several hundred thousand dollars on a home, but out here in St. Louis, Chicago, Minneapolis etc, a lot of the outlying suburbs are considerably more expensive yet all they are, are endless faceless subdivisions.. shoddily built houses with yard-nazi's patrolling to ensure that your garden is perfectly manicured.

Right, I really haven't noticed a difference on my food bill. Ethanol will probably do more to raise prices than gas prices.

$3.31 the other day. One nice thing is that for us at least it's only temporary, Missouri has almost no gas tax and we're just seeing the effects of refinery shutdowns and transport issues, current projections see us hitting the peak of around $3.40 and the slow decline back to $3.00 land.

$3.15 yesterday, $3.19 today and that's 87 grade at the Hess station in Amherst, routinely rock-bottom cheapest in the area! The highest price for premium I've seen around the Pioneer Valley today was $3.47 at the Sunoco in South Deerfield; however, I'll bet it has exceeded $3.50 elsewhere in the area.

By Memorial Day it'll be cheaper for me to commute via rented helicopter for fussakes!

Outskirts, and upscale neighborhoods are at $4 and more.

Irvine, CA unleaded regular (this was last week mind you) $3.89. The more expensive retailers (can't see why anyone would frequent these) are ALREADY at $4.05, $4.15 & $4.25 (regular, mid grade, and super) in the LA area.

Parts further up the coast of LA county, Malibu and others are seeing the same.

There are a few places in Long Beach, Anaheim, and Compton areas that are still in the $3.59 - $3.79 range for regular. But don't expect that to last long.
I've seen gas prices rise 7 cents at most stations in the last week!
A penny a day or more!  >:(

My ass is still sore from all the money I spent on gas this past week. To wit:

1100 miles roundtrip to SC and back, including 40 miles a day to the jobsite.
My work vehicle gets 17 mpg highway, 11 in the city for an average of 15 mpg.
That's 73 gallons of gas... at $3.30/gal average, that's $242 in one week for fuel.

I'll made that same trip three weeks ago, and will make it two more times before I'm finished down there.

True, truckers who own their own vehicles are getting f**ked bad.

Initially, yes. Same with me. But at the end of the year we can write off all business mileage at 48.5 cents a mile (2007 deduction rates - that should increase this year). I doubt big rigs get better than 8 MPG, so they will basically be able to write off only their fuel costs if diesel stays at ~$4 a gallon. They might still be getting hosed on maintenance costs, which as far as I know are built into that 48.5 cent deduction per mile.

That's almost certainly true. Whilst peak oil is a fact, I truly believe we're some way away from that.. humanity may well be dealt another good hand, giving us the necessary amount of time to move from oil to other means of power. At least in the short term, electric cars are probably the best answer until/if we can come up with another easily extractable/refinable/usable/purchasable source of propulsion fuel.

Oil prices are high mainly due to the ridiculously weakened state of the economy (read: dollar), the fact that our refineries are not working at even 70% of their capacity and due to the fact that Oil is controlled by a cartel, mainly made up of countries who's concern for our economic interests isn't exactly a paramount factor in price decisions.

I'm quite sure we're going to have a couple of years paying high prices.. I think it's possible we could see prices of $4.50 or so in the higher tax states.. not much more than that. The market eventually reaches a level were demand tails off and so does the price. Get ready to hold your wallets for a couple of years, but I'm quite sure things will improve. As the dollar gains in strength gasoline should, based on all past experience and economic data, drop back down below $3.00 a gallon, as US refineries are improved and operate at a higher efficiency that price should drop again and if we do begin to drill in Alaska, North Dakota, The Gulf of Mexico and Colorado then the price will drop yet further. Couple this with the cost of living increases that are long overdue to many millions of Americans and I believe the outlook, whilst not rosy, may be a bit more comfortable than this. Just in time for me to buy one of those 2010 Camaro's I hope.  ;) ;D

That is why California leads the nation in foreclosures (Vegas, Miami, Ohio aside).  People are walking away because they owe more on their mortgages than the homes are worth.  If you don't own a home already, grab a foreclosure at a bargain price!

I just went back to the beginning of this thread, when most gas prices were in the $2/gal range, and saw this post from our departed ellipsis guest (assuming he never comes back, lol):

Another thing I've never understood is the "fraction-of-a-cent". What I mean is, all the prices have a "9/10ths" suffix; I don't know why. For example, if one gallon of gas is $1.859, and you got exactly one gallon, you can't cut your penny into ten pieces and give 'em only nine; U.S. currency doesn't work that way. Wouldn't you really be paying $1.86? ::)

That fraction-of-a-cent thingy has always boggled my mind too. I whole heartedly agree with this statement. Yes, you should pay the full cent.

20 cents per gallon in Venezuala for those interested in relocating.

I'm contemplating joining BJ's (a warehouse club) simply because their gas is about 20 cents cheaper.  If I can save that much its worth the very slightly longer drve to fill up and I can pick up my groceries at the same time.  I don't know how much it costs to join but I have an offer of 60 days free membership so I figured I'd use that at least.

$3.49 is the cheapest around here. This is starting to piss me off, Missouri has almost no gas tax so why is our price higher than the national average?!

$3.78.9 is the highest I've seen around here so far.

At my usual filling station, the Hess up the street, it's been $3.53.9 for the cheap grade for a week steady.  I've taken to filling when my tank is about 60% full.  You don't really save any money, but it feels less depressing to pay $17.00 instead of $40.00!

My station, the Amherst Hess, went up $0.02 to $3.56* for 87 grade, and that's about the cheapest around.  I've seen a few other stations at $3.56.  The most expensive I saw today was the Sunoco in S. Deerfield at $3.85 for premium.

that's a good trick and I've been doing that or something similar for awhile, just filling up about 2/3 and then I don't feel so bad wither. Well, it seems prices have gone up again since last night and I need to fill up on the way home since I didn't last night  >:(  I saw $3.90 on the way to work this morning. I'm gonna check that website that shows where the cheapest prices are and see if it works.  this is really getting out of hand.

Where I live in Mass it jumped to $3.85, the lowest is a bit far away in town so it's not worth the drive for $3.83. And close enough to the $3.85 station is an Exxon selling regular unleaded for $4.09. Screw Exxon.

And there are actually morons that fill up at Exxon when it's $3.85 right down the road. What is wrong with some people?

We're easily going to be at $5 per gallon by the end of the year, and easily $6 by the end of next year.

I live in a small town, so I see the same SUVs occasionally, and whenever it's always one person driving them, I get so annoyed. There should be a law that if you're going to buy an SUV, you have to submit an application to prove you need one.

I read in the local paper about some of the smaller gas companies and privately owned gas stations are having to buy new pumps or have them altered because they were preset to stop pumping gas at $70.
Some of the Brits here were saying that when they arrived (12 - 18 months ago)  it cost about $40 to fill the car now it's not too far short of $80!
