Today, in a few towns over from where I live...2 different gas stations decided to have a little gas war and they kept lowering their prices all day long...it ended going down some 60 cents a gallon....there were people waiting in line for an hour...in order to fill up their tanks!!  The police told them they had to up the price before it got dark because they are both on a heavily populated highway...and they didn't want cars lining up and down the highway all night long. :D

without a tax revenue base we can forget about switching over to alternative fuels. i personally don't think the economy will restructure around alternatives without public sector funding. it's going to be too long before it becomes profitable.

You are correct.

I have always said, I don't think we pay too much, but I'm not gonna balk at the costs going down for a while.

To be perfectly honest.. and this goes against everything I believe in.. the Tax cuts need to be abolished and you're right, more funding needs to go in to alternatives.

Somebody has apparently started another thread about Gas on here, also discussing prices... so I thought I'd put this one back on top. This one was here first, so we do NOT need a second thread to discuss the same thing.

Back on topic, we're still paying too darn much for gasoline. >:(

I'd gladly buy one if you can find me one that will fit 5 people, baseball equipment for 3, lawn chairs for 4, a cooler and jackets....oh, and it has to be able to withstand the "predictable" Illinois weather, drive on ice/snow, etc. ::)

Easy.

My old man had a big station wagon for years.

He could fit me and my buddy's when we were kids, with bikes and balls to play football.

It didn't get 30 miles to the gallon, granted, it got about 18-20.

Have you considered a hybrid vehicle?  I don't know how the savings will pay off in the long run, but it might help  :-\\  At least in California you get a tax break for driving an alternative-fuel vehicle as well.  I think Ford and Jeep have a hybrid SUV on the market but I am not certain.

Volvos are very good cars and are actually quite good on gas mileage in my experience.  I don't think they can tow a boat though  :-\\

When you have a big family and towing needs and live in the Midwest where it snows and gets really cold, an SUV is justified.  It's the people who just drive them around as status symbols and to compensate for whatever that annoy me because they are driving up everyone's fuel costs through unnecessary demand  :-\\

Fair point.

I have no problem with people driving big cars to be honest.

I looked at a lot of trucks before I bought the car I have now.
Mainly, because I enjoy off-roading and we get nasty snow and ice.

We got an electric lawnmower for just this reason when I lived with my parents.  More clean and energy-efficient.  Of course you can always use the old-school unpowered mowers but those don't cut very well through thick grass.

Jim Cramer (that screaming a-hole on CNBC) vehemently defends the oil companies Oh, the poor oil companies. Life has been so hard for them with their profit margins so low for the past 20 years. It is good, moral, and right that Exxon-Mobil get the chance to at least make some money today. God knows they've slaved away for it! Just look at that poor Lee Raymond....
Anyway, there's been a memo from Chevron (Condi's company, I might add) leaked from 1995 entreating the oil companies to limit production and limit supply. If premium stayed at $1.32 a gallon, the cupboards would be bare at the executive mansions. In California over tha last decade 18 out of 32 refineries have been shut down. Shut down by whom? Environmental whackos? Wrong, guess again. The federal government? Nope, give it another try. Could it possibly be...the refining companies themselves? Ding ding ding ding! You are correct, sir! Give that man a set of steak knives!

About half the service stations in my area are just above $3.00/gallon. About half are just below. By next week I expect them to all be above $3.00. It's been raining a lot in Massachusetts this week. I'm surprised the prices haven't gone up to $4.00/gallon. Why? 'Cuz it's raining. Gas is more expensive when it's raining, you know!

Most cars can take the cheap stuff.  Having gone through an auto mechanics class and going out with mechanics, I learned that using the expensive stuff is usually a suckers game.  It is best to check the owners manual for the octane rating, or, fill up with the cheap stuff, if your enging starts to chug when you shut it off, it means you need the more expensive brew.

You're absolutely right.  According to almost every mechanic I've known, the only cars that really "need" the higher octane are the high-performance cars and some of the foreign cars (Audi's in particular).  Even those won't be damaged by using lower octane gas, but they might have a decrease in performance.  Strangely enough, I've put higher octane gas in my Expedition (at my MIL's house, 89 is usually cheaper than 87) and the engine makes MORE noise than if I put in the cheap stuff ???

My objection to the HBO documentary "Too Hot Not To Handle" was the ending in which the hybrid car is presented as the wave of the future. Sorry, the wave of the future is the end of the personal passenger car and a more meager existence than we have seen in over seventy years! Even HBO didn't dare dis the car companies.
We've always had a vision of the future as being:
a. Convenient.
b. Lieisurely.
c. Full of flying cars free of pollution.
Sorry, it'll be none of those.

It all depends on the engine.

Unless you have a "high compression engine", there is no difference between the different grades of gasoline.  And just as you said, 90% of the cars it does not make any difference.

I have 2 vehicles, and they both have high compression engines.  One is my 1997 Dodge Intrepid.  It has the 3.0 liter engine, and midgrade is recommended.  And yes, I do see a performance difference between the two.  I run the cheap stuff most of the time though, saving the midgrade for long trips.  Since I only drive it 1-2 times a week (no more then 5 miles round trip), is a waste for me to use anything higher.  I only fill it up once a month, and the engine never gets warmed up before I am done.

My bike is a different matter however.  With the cheap stuff, acceleration is off, and it is harder to start.  When I put in mid-grade, performance increases greatly.  In addition, I get another 10-15 miles per tank.  Putting in Premium is even better.  With Premium, I actually get 20-40 miles further on a tank over the cheap stuff.  This almost pays for the difference in cost.

However, my '75 van sees no difference, and neither did my Goldwing.  Since neither of these has high compression engines, putting in anything but regular is a waste of money.

This is where reading your user manual helps.  Also learn how to compute your own gas mileage and track it.  That is the best way to see which works best for your vehicle.

Depending on which gas station you go to. . . .  it can range anywhere from $2.95 to over $3.00.  My hubby usually fills up the cars so I do not pay much attention to the prices.  However, I took my little VW out the other day and paid $15.00 for 5 gallons of gas.  I remember I use to be able to fill it up for 10 bucks.  Oh - to go back to those days.

I've thought about walking to work, but from my house to work you either have to get on the freeway for one whole exit or drive down a frontage road that is surrounded by cow fields.  Not exactly the best way to commute.  :)

We need a new government, one that will help us break up the oil monopolies and at the same time help us wean ourselves off petroleum dependency. Right now Big Oil is fleecing you because they know that light sweet crude, the kind that flows like water, is running out. We're in the last gasp of easy extraction. That does not make it right for the fatcats to get fatter by making people struggling to get by struggle even more, but they will continue to do it as long as the get to make the money and the rules!

It's quite easy: there are 3.79 gallons in a liter, so to convert liters to gallons, all you do is multiply by 3.79...and with some conversion, you might be able to figure out how much that'd be for gallon.

The cheapest gas around here is at Cumberland Farms convenience stores.  It's all the way down to $2.89/gallon!

You know what I hate about this?  The oil companies have no incentive to significantly drop prices.  They've realized that at $3.50 or $4.00/gallon, consumers will b*tch a lot, but they won't stop driving.

They have no choice!

It's not that I don't want to take the bus to work, it's that I can't!  Now, a lot of my fellow Americans will not take mass transit even when its available.  Don't do that!  People might think you are poor, and that's the most shameful thing to be in America!  I mean, most Americans are poor, but they'll make themselves even poorer trying to keep up appearances.  There really isn't a "millionaire next door," but you don't want to look like the one who isn't!  That's why there's little fear among car companies of Americans reverting back to "economy cars."  Buy that big SUV! Pay hundreds of dollars to the finance company for the next five years, spend a hundred bucks just filling the tank!  It's OK if you can't afford orthodunture for your kid.  Fewer people will see his crooked teeth than will see, ugh, a four-cylinder!  You want the neighbors to think you got class don't you?

I know a retired linguistics professor whose savings and investments total a couple of million net.  What does he drive?  A 1986 Toyota Camry.  Why? Why not?  He's the type of guy who is the purported "Millionaire Next Door."  However, that book was less about praising thrift than guilt-tripping the 99% of the public who are not millionaires.

I am trying to be glad, but have a hard time when I look at a three year gas price chart.

I went to my doctor today, 60 mile round trip, I guess that cost me about $8 in gas alone never mind wear and tear.

At least I think I can sell this vehicle fairly easily when the time comes. People seem to be more than willing to throw their money away on wasteful vehicles in this area. In our defense, we bought that car when gas was much less and we didn't even realize it requires premium until after we bought it.  >:(

True, very true...

You must be one of them city folks, though. It is 7 miles for me just to get to the main highway. To go to Sam's or Costco, it is about 40 miles round trip.

Honestly, we have tons of doctors here in town and that's where most of ours are. We do have a few near where we used to live who have taken such good care of us that we hate to give them up. Those are the ones we don't see all the time.

I actually make a written plan out when I plan to go more than a few miles, as in what places I am going, for what, and in what order, I try to lump errands together.

Please enjoy your savings, by all means. Had you foreseen & had the means to aquire houses here and sell them in the last 3 years, you would have scored heavily. But the housing boom here has subsided and they aren't selling fast, prices are having to be reduced which is usually the kiss of death per my realtor.  stay out of the way of the bullets as you're filling up.

what part of The Golden State did you reside in?  I lived in San Antonio in 1958-1960 and then moved out West and have been here since and don't plan on moving. I lived in the Long Beach area of Los Angeles. At the time I left, it was hard to sell anything, especially the "own your own" conversions in Long Beach. You could buy 650 sq. ft. for well under 100k at that time, maybe $60k if you were lucky... with a beach view (if you crane your neck).

Here, in far, far, far North Dallas, we don't have the same crime problems as the big city. But we have the low housing costs. What we have are Californians who have cashed out and come here thinking they can live in a 6000 sq ft mansion and drive expensive cars... and buy expensive cars for the kids... and the money goes real fast. Especially when they get hit for the $600+ electricity bill in the summer. We actually know people who have had electric bills over $1200 in the summer.

you nailed it exactly with the Californians selling here, and moving to Texas thinking to live the life of luxury but it's all relative and balances out. I didn't go to LB State... and if I did, it would be so different now I bet because I'm pretty old.

Regarding the "life of luxury" in Texas, it must be a horrid shock to come here and watch the money get eaten up if you only look at the listing price of housing. When you add the taxes, other costs, plus pest control due to large bugs, scorpions, transportation to a county that actually sells booze, etc., it isn't so cheap.

I never managed to get all the gun laws straight. There are some stupid laws, like if it is dark, you can shoot at people if they are threatening your property.

There are some good barbeque joints around, but we'll still drive 40 miles up to the Carl's Jr. for one of those burgers Paris Hilton used to advertise.

If you can ever get an In N Out Burger here, you will have people from a five state radius clogging the drive through.

Kinda sad when we're saying gas is "cheap" just because it's under two dollars. I think that we're being conditioned by the oil companies to think that.

American's really are spoiled about the cost of things.  They get something for less then half the cost of the same item in most areas of the world, and still they complain.  I invite some of them to go buy petrol in Japan.  Where even in 1988 a Big Mac would set you back almost $5, and gasoline was almost 200% higher then it is in the US.

Of course, for most of them it is their own fault.  They are so brain-washed into the "bigger is better mindset", that they buy either 8+ cylynder luxury cars, or beast sized SUVs which get 15 MPG.

I just laugh at their whines though.  As even when gas was at it's highest, I still spent only $5-10 per week for Premium.  After all, nothing stopped them from getting a motorcycle like I did.

I pulled in, and gave the cashere a $10, and filled up my tank with Premium.  And I even got .75 in change back!  And that $9.25 will be all I need to spend for the next 2-3 weeks.  But then again, lately my driving has only ammounted to maybe 50 miles a week.

And even last summer when I had a 60 mile commute, the price of gas did not eat me up.  Driving an economy vehicle makes even more sense to me now then it did when I was a teenager and gas was under $1 a gallon.

It was somewhere between 4-5 gallons.  My bike has a 5 gallon tank, so could not have been more then that.  I think it cost somewhere around $2.45, I never pay attention to the price to be honest.

I have always prefered motorcycles, for many reasons.  For one, they use far less natural resources to build.  You can build 5-8 motorcycles with the resources that go into 1 SUV.  They also use less oil and gasoline in operation.  And because of simpler engines, they use less (if not no) toxic chemicals like DOT hydrolic fluid, antifreeze, or freon.

And many states are now recognizing this fact.  In California, there are 2 ways to get to use a car pool lane.  1 is to have 2 (or more) people in your car.  The other is to drive what they consider a "high efficiency vehicle".  Under the California code, that covers electric cars, hybred cars, and motorcycles.  They are trying to pass legislation now to include biodiesel and other alternative fuels to that list.

I wish that more people would consider motorcycles for routine comutes.  I am not advocating a total conversion, since I also own a car.  But when the weather is nice and you have nothing (or nobody) that needs to be carried, motorcycles would go a long ways to reducing fuel use, polution, and congestion.  Even the smallest car engines are larger then the vast majority of motorcycles engines.  Only the latest models of Goldwings and Harley-Davidsons come anywhere close to that of a car.  And at 1.8L, even the massive Goldwing is a runt compared to what is used in most SUVs (the current Ford Explorer comes with either a 4L or 4.6L engine).

And that massive 1.8L Goldwing engine?  It is double the size of the engine in my 900cc motorcycle.  And I drive what is considered to be a "sportbike".

I agree with you there.  Considering how most people drive their cars, I would hate to see some of them on motorcycles.  However, if just 10-15% would use them more often, it could have a huge impact on traffic.

As a good example, look at Los Angeles.  Here is a city with probably the worst congestion in the nation.  It also has some of the best weather in the nation.  If on the nice cunny days only 10% switched from cars to bikes, you would see a noticeable reduction in traffic.  You can fit 2-3 motorcycles easily into the space taken up by those SUVs.

I am well aware that something like this would not work in the northern areas of the country.  Driving my bike in Alabama in winter is one thing.  I even did it when I lived in North Carolina (as long as there was no snow on the ground or expected).  I would hate to consider driving a bike in Connecticut in the winter.  I am not a Smurf, so would not look good in blue.  8)

Motorcycles are fuel efficient, but not everybody's cut out to ride one.
What we need is a long-term plan for revitalized mass transit and more localized economies.  I used to live where I could walk a few blocks to buy a loaf of bread and a bottle of milk.  Now I have drive five miles to get either (how I ended up living here is a long story!).  I could walk it, but who's got time?  This road existed 100 years ago.  100 years ago the people living on this road milked their own cows and baked their own bread.  I don't have cows or a wheat field!
But if you talk in terms of public transportation and more self-subsistent municipal economies, people call you a commie.  That's because if you drive less, you don't hand over so much of your money to the petroleum and automobile industry.  Of course, it takes steel and fuel to create mass transit systems, but it's 100 times more efficient once it's set up and in use.
That's what all this talk about "individualism" from the Right seems to boil down to.  The "individualist" lives in an exurban tract mansion next to a golf course and drives his SUV to pick up the kids at soccer practice ten miles away!

What?  When I was a kid if you lived one mile away from school, you hoofed it!  In fact one mile was the limit for schoolbus service.  I lived like 0.99 miles from the building, and I couldn't get the bus!  On cold and rainy days, I just walked up the block a bit and caught the bus from there.  The driver didn't care and the school didn't catch on, no harm done!

These kids grow up with the parents kow-towing to their every desire, then they go out into the workforce and expect the world to kiss their butts...and the world does!  'specially if you're blonde with big boobs!
That's what I said to my brother-in-law who was going on about how he didn't want my niece to grow up spoiled.  He said, "I don't want her to be like those UMass girls with blonde hair and big t*ts who think the world revolves around them!"
I said, "But...the world DOES revolve around them, at least so far as I've observed!"

I saw 1.96 for reg unleaded yesterday. I didn't need any though.

On hauling children around: It is pathetic. Where we live, it is standard for 16 year olds to get a car, often new or near new. It doesn't matter if the kid is mature or not, as long as they pass the test. And no, the kids are not expected to walk anywhere. Parents gripe if the school will not bus from their house because it is too close. And then there are plenty of parents who cannot stand to be away from their kids that long so the line to pick up children from the school is often blocks long and starts to form more than a half hour before school lets out!

Recently, two moms got into a full on brawl outside of an elementary school.

Stupid people.

You have to realize, I am a huge believer in Public Transit.  When I lived in LA, I took the Subway quite often.  When I needed to go to Long Beach (about 45 miles) I took the train.  But the LA subway system is almost a joke.  To many NIMBY people sabotaged it, so it does not go to half of the locations that it needed to get to.  About the only places it goes to is downtown, Hollywood, and Long Beach.  It does not run across the San Fernando Valley, nor does it run down Wilshire past the first few miles on the East side.  It does not even go to LAX, but stops a few miles away.  You still have to catch either a city bus or a taxi to get to the airport.  You can see from the tracks the spur line that was intended for the airport, but political pressure (mostly from Taxi drivers) prevented it from being finsihed.

In a city like LA, a lot of places are almost impossible to get to by decent public tranist.  When I lived in the Mojave Desert, my commute to work was 3 trains and a bus.  A 100 mile trip took me about 3 hours each way.  And when I worked on Wilshire, it was 2 trains (30 minutes) and a 45 minute bus ride (no trains went West of Highland Ave).  That same trip was just over 30 minutes by car.  And I still had to drive to and from the train stop.  The city bus did not start until after I had to catch the train, and the last bus stopped running before I got home.

New York is unusual, because it grew up around the subway system.  In most US cities however, they are spread wide and far apart.  In LA, a lot of people do not think twice about driving 100+ miles to get to work.  And where your major alternative is slow public transit (which goes on strike for 30-60 days every thrid year), it simply makes no sense.

Here in Alabama, it is very different.  With a population of only 135,000, there is simply not enough of a customer base to make busses affordable outside of the bigger cities.  There have been attempts in the past in my town, and they have all failed due to low ridership.

I have long supported Diesel.  While it may be more polluting, it is also the easiest to convert to "Alternative Fuels".  A lot of farmers in the area have converted their tractors to Bio-Diesel.  And if I ever get another vehicle, it will probably be a diesel for the same reason.

In fact, spending $75-200 converting a diesel engine can even get you free fuel.  Most resteraunts pay to have their waste fryer oil disposed of.  However, with some straining it can be run in a diesel engine.  A lot of individuals in the country are already powering their vehicles this way, reducing their effective fuel costs to nothing.

And if you are running low on fuel, ignore the gas station.  Simply go to the local Grocery Store and buy some Wesson.  This will make both Florence Henderson and Mother Nature happy.  8)

That is not unusual for Harris Ranch though.  Being in the middle of nowhere on the Grapevine, gas there is normally between 5-15 cents more then anywhere else in the state.

I used to drive the 5 between Vallejo and LA every month, and tried to avoid getting gas along there if I could.  But because of the distances, I always had to fill up somewhere between Lost Hills and Buttonwillow.  All the station owners in the area know this, and take advantage of it.

One of the executives of a local oil company came into my store today, and one of the things I found out kinda surprised me.  And it was mostly a surprise because I am not surprised that people have not realized this earlier.

The simple fact, is that the oil companies can't lower the price they charge for gasoline.  Because it is against the law.

Back in 1911, the Standard Oil company was broken up because of anti-trust regulations.  One of the major charges was that John Paul Getty's oil company was selling gasoline below cost, in order to drive the competition out of business.  Some of the anti-trust regulations put into place was to prevent companies from selling their product below "cost or market price".

And the price of Gasoline is set by the world commodities markets.  If the world commodity price is $100 a barrel, then by law, the oil companies can't sell gasoline for less.  And since they produce between 20-45% of their own oil, that means gross profits off of the oil they produce themselves.

So what is the solution?  Well, either getting after OPEC, which actually sets the "benchmark price" on crude oil.  Or on the commodities speculators who drive the price up even more.

Or we can deregulate the industry, and allow them to sell oil for below the international market price.  Because under current US Laws, they are not allowed to do so.

You can check where the lowest prices in the country are AND you can plot gas prices between up to 3 cities for a 3 year period to see how they've gone up and down.  Back in 2004, a gallon of gas in the Atlanta area was $1.56.  The good old days.

gotta love the 'nard what with its red lobster, best buy and close proximity to the camarillo outlets.  the costco gas station was only $2.91 on Tuesday (3/13) I say only like its a good thing but regular in Montecito that same day was 3.39 for regular.

Guess I'd might as well try to find the blueprints for the old Stanley Steamer and get cracking on it. It'd be kind of nice if I could jerk the V-8 out of my Crown Vic and replace it with a steam powerplant, and then mount an old train whistle on the roof so I could blast it every time I pass a gas station just to say "F**K YOU!" to Big Oil.
Of course, it would be rather inconvenient (not to mention messy), since I'd have to rip out my back seat so I'd have somewhere to store the coal, plus I'd need someone to ride shotgun with me all the time to keep the boiler stoked.
    Any volunteers?  :D :D :D

But still, trust me, running a car in the US is incredibly cheap compared to most other developed nations.

Insurance is about a third as much as in most European nations, vehicles themselves are cheaper, there are far less taxes on automobiles, less toll-roads and gasoline is far, far cheaper.

I've said it before, I wouldn't mind gas prices going double what they are right now if driving was a luxury not a necessity.  A hundred million other Americans and I do not live and work where this is viable mass transit.  That's not how America was civilly engineered for the past 80 years.  The entire layout of the American suburb/exurb---and then most American cities--was prejudiced in favor of the automobile.

Sure, you could move to Manhattan and give up your car, but you'd spend EVEN MORE money for the OUTRAGEOUS expenses of living in NYC.

If I could leave my car in the driveway and just take troilleys and buses everywhere, I wouldn't mind if gas went up to $8 a gallon.

Of course, hubby refused to stop on our way home this past weekend at any of the stations where gas was $3.19 (because I still had over 1/2 tank) so I ended up paying $3.54 2 days later (since I was under 1/4 tank).  Oh, and he also refused to stop where gas was $3.09 on the way out because of the same reason.  He also wouldn't take the extra 2 minutes to get the cashier at Wal-Mart to reload the gift card so we could save 3 cents/gallon because "it's only a dollar or so".....thing is, save a buck or two twenty times and you've got $20-40. ::)  Why can he not understand that burning through $3.19 (or lower) gas is much more sensible than burning through $3.54?

There's a lot to be said for living on the border of Illinois and Missouri. My tax dollars go to the Illinois state government who provide all manner of wonderful social welfare programs (Including a pretty good health care system) but my sales tax dollars all go to the Missouri state government, who basically do nothing and as such have very low levels of tax on everything.
