It's dropped below $2.00 in town as well now.

$1.99 to be exact.

In Saint Louis the average is around $2.10, but out of town it's down in the $1.80's.

Gas is cheaper in Independence (where I work) than in north Kansas City (which is where I live), so I thought I'd fill up there after I got off work tonight. The places just down the street from where I work still had it for $1.77, but I drove down to this QuikTrip another couple miles down the road and I couldn't believe my eyes.

They had it for $1.65, and it ended up costing me $26 to fill up my tank.

I really hope gas keeps going down even further because the economy could really use the help right now.

The price of regular unleaded at the Arco/AM-PM station near where I live is $2.15.9, and I recently filled the tanks on my car and my truck. The state in which I live has no sales tax (and probably never will, if the general populace continues to vote in the manner that it always has), which makes everything cheaper. The only bad thing about this particular gas station is that it is located next to Interstate 5 and is also in close proximity to the end of a local freeway known variously as "Beltline Highway", "Beltline Road" or "569" (after its state designation as Highway 569), which causes very long lines that often reach all the way back to the bank parking lot behind the station. .

Just like usual, the low gas prices are only temporary guys...

Some southern California retailers are selling for as low as $1.99, some larger ones $1.79.

Let me let you in on some info, I work as a scheduler and dispatch for the gas tanker trucks for one of the largest oil companies on the earth ( :-X).
We've seen dealers push off (refuse loads) with large inventories as the demand is low in past weeks, especially if the price for oil was going lower.

But just over the last four days, these same dealers are running out, demanding extra loads of gas they normally don't want or need. Why? 'Cause consumers are running to the $1.99 retailers and buying gas like its going out of style. Dealers normally selling 5000-6000 as day are selling 10000-12000 per day. Note that these retailers aren't really making more than a penny or two on this gas anyway...

As it takes a few days for the increase in orders and volume to impact the market and the demand for refineries become apparent, the price will spike back up and quickly, keeping in mind the additional brief but significant increase in driving before the holiday/holiday travel season.

Taking in mind that we're going back to 12hr days to help keep these guys supplied with gas again, the demand can't double and prices stay low at the same time, simple supply and demand economics. So enjoy the low gas prices for another week or so, at best, its going up again, and quickly.  :P

Yet the NYMEX Future price continues to drop.

I understand what you're saying and you're partially right, but as it gets cheaper for the suppliers to purchase price goes down, as demand goes up, price goes up. Spike? Doubt it. Plateau? One would assume.

Independence; MO has the cheapest in the country at $1.37.

St. Louis; MO is the second cheapest at just over $1.40.

I echo Al's sentiment - Missouri FTW.

So what if St. Louis city schools lost their accreditation and those cork smokers that built on flood plains in Chesterfield valley are still underwater, I'm neither a school teacher nor is my house flooded, my power bills keep dropping, I'm filling up my large sedan for less than $20 and food prices have been dropping as well. Happy as a Larry.

it really does. The last time we had gas close to this was just before the Arizona pipeline ruptured in 2003. That week gas in Cali was 1.87.  Then AZ (where I spent a week) had a pipeline rupture and virtually no gas in the state. The gas stations jacked up the prices.  and then they brought fuel in from CA. All the way home I was seeing gas for more than $3 $3.75 in the middle of the desert.

Once things settled our gas never went below 2.29 until now!

we have stations that charge you 45 cents to use an ATM card.  it doesn't seem like much but it does increase the cost. If you're filling up its not that big a deal but sometimes I can only afford a gallon or two.... this would increase the cost for gas 22 cents a gallon if I only bought two.

The cheaper gas prices are cold comfort nowadays.

And it's pretty damn cold.  We're in our second major snow storm in 72 hours.  Some folks in New England are still without power after the 12/12 ice storm.  The lower Pioneer Valley was mercifully spared, but the hills got hit something fierce as did Worcester County and up into New Hampshire.

actually, there was an article in the local paper this morning saying that $4+ a gallon gas next summer is inevitable. the cheap prices now are setting us up for it, because when prices are low, oil companies don't have incentives to explore or go after difficult fields.

There's very little reason. The price of oil has dropped several dollars since the beginning of January, it's back down in the $30's for a barrel. What tends to happen is the price drops by a penny or two with a $2 drop and goes up 5-6 cents with a $1 rise. It's a rip off to be frank, but that's what happens when you allow cartels.

I thought the price of oil was still falling - I know Dai commented on the rising petrol prices a week or so ago as being weird.  Also the major airlines are still charging massive 'fuel surcharges' when the cost of oil is a fraction of what it was last summer when they introduced them.  ::)

cost me $33 bucks to fill up. I got regular and it was around 2.60 per gal, + I got a $5 car wash too. when the gas had gone way up last year, I washed our cars at home by hand, but since it came down, I have paid for car washes, but now that it's going back up I'm gonna have to do them myself again and we have 3 friggin cars.

HERE WE GO AGAIN  >:(

According to Gasbuddy.com, the US National average is back to $2.50 for regular, a 45-cent increase in just a month! It that rate keeps up, it will be $3 a gallon by the Fourth of July!  The last thing you want in an economic recovery is a return to high gas prices! The next few weeks will be critical in terms of how gas prices can cope with us; almost NO analysts predicted $3.00 a gallon this year, but we may very well may see it before summer ends; the worst case scenerio would be now drop in gas prices this fall followed by another run-up next spring/early summer!

Whilst you make a valid point. Places to store oil are frantically being filled and soon enough there will literally be, nowhere to keep it. Expect a big sell off the moment this is made public knowledge.

I paid $2.34 a gallon this morning and was kind of proud of myself because when I started driving, I noticed all the other stations around this one and down the road were $2.53 and $2.54!  I guess I caught mine early enough they hadn't gone out to change the prices!  It pays to fill up at 6:15 am!

I filled up for $2.42/gal. today (Amherst Hess).  It's gone up a dime in the past week.

When you guys report gas prices, are you rounding up because of the extra 9/10 cent they tack on?  That extra 9/10 cent makes a wee bit of difference especially if you drive a tank :P

^ I don't know about that, but I DO know one trick is to pay cash if you can, at least here in Florida.  You can get a break of 2 or 3 cents off the gallon if you pay cash instead of using a card.  If I'm not a big rush I'll go in and pay cash, but if I'm in a hurry, I just zip my card and go.

$2.43 is more like it, 2.42 9/10 is kinda awkward, but if I say $2.43, people will think I mean $2.43 9/10, which means $2.44, and that's tomorrow's price!

I use my AMEX at Costco.  Costco members get a price break of about 5 cents off the average market price in the area, plus I get 3% rewards back...it kinda adds up.

Well, most of us like to truncate that 9/10ths thingy and report the whole-number price, since those numbers stand out on the signs. I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but if you were to purchase exactly one gallon of gas and pay cash for it, you would undoubtedly have to pay the whole cent; you can't cut your penny into 10 pieces and submit only 9 of them; U.S. currency doesn't work that way. So if the designated price for a gallon of gas was, say, $2.83 9/10, you'd actually pay $2.84, right?

For the past few weeks my local gas prices have hovered around $3/gal, and they were just a shade below that on last check.

Currently $2.59 for unleaded in my area.

Now back above $3/gal.

The Costco near my house currently sells unleaded gas for $2.85, but there were long lines of cars there a couple days ago...which doesn't surprise me.
