Yeah, it might be some sort of gimmick to make the product seem like you should go out and buy it.. ::) :-\\

Speaking of 21, I saw footage recently on a television show about vintage game shows of a British version of the notorious American quiz/game show Twenty-One, made famous because of the whole Van Doren/Stempel game show fix of several decades ago.

The show barely lasted a whole season before, in a strangely similar (and ironically, completely the opposite) incident to that of the American version, a contestant admitted to having been coached and given the answers in advance.

I remember that. Actually, I don't remember the incident itself, cuz I wasn't around then...but I did read about it in a book, and I saw the 90's movie Quiz Show, which was based on the Twenty-One scandal. I also know that a British actor played the role of Charles Van Doren in the movie, but I keep forgetting his name.

I also know that there was a short-lived revival of Twenty-One about a decade ago, with Maury Povich as the emcee.

Subject: Re: Miscellaneous

Written By: wildcard on 12/31/09 at 3:07 am

I like canasta because you have to do a lot of thinking about how to best play with what you're given.  I hate having a partner who doesn't know how to start a wild card run when he's dealt 5 wild cards.

I play canasta

I was taught how to play that a while ago, but I didn't quite catch on.

Subject: Re: Miscellaneous

Written By: wildcard on 12/31/09 at 10:01 pm

you make runs of 7 cards. 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 A or A K Q J 10 9 8 7 or whatever # order.  2's and jokers are wild cards, but if you use a two in the right # order then it counts as a regular card and you get more points for making what is called a natural.  I don't know how to score, but naturals are more points then a canasta you made with wild cards and ending the game with wild cards in your hand is not good.  There are  kitties you can pick up if you run out of cards and that will give you points.

So there's 11 cards dealt to four players ( 2 teams), two piles of 11 cards for the kitties, and the rest of the cards are the draw pile and the top card starts the discard pile  ( 2 decks of cards)

that's how we play it.

Subject: Re: Miscellaneous

Written By: nally on 01/01/10 at 12:10 am

Thanks. So I guess it's one of those games played with more than one deck. Seems a little confusing at first, but I'll eventually learn.

Subject: Re: Miscellaneous

Written By: wildcard on 01/01/10 at 2:28 am

It's not that difficult, basically it's about playing your cards right.  Something I didn't mention was that if you have too many wild cards in your hand, you can start a wild card run.  My partner last game didn't know this, so we had no control over the game and it really sucked.

And of course, those who have seen the film know that Mike Myers plays a double role: the title character and his nemesis.

Bands we love that are very obscure. My picks: almost all of them! I'm currently listening to German power metal group Freedom Call, known for epic melodies, fantasy-based lyrics, use of medieval horns, and emphasis on backing vocals. Here's a song from them. Check it out!

Yep, and it was quite interesting, getting to see how it all got put together! It was on the evening of January 20, 1995, when I saw it...so in a couple days it'll be 15 years since then.

The entire episode took 3 hours to film; each scene had to be acted out through several takes; those of us in the audience provided the laugh track whenever we saw something funny. After it's finally all done, it has to be edited for viewing...and several weeks later it's finally able to be shown on TV to the public! (Between scenes, there were intermissions.) For the record, that particular episode premiered on ABC network on March 17, 1995...cast member Patrick Duffy's 46th birthday.

Yep...it's usually in those places where the TV shows get filmed live. It was so much fun to see the main set of "Step By Step" in person. It may look like the inside of a home on your TV screen, but it's all a set of scenery.

For outdoor scenes, I'm guessing that the cast either travels to a particular location, or they use a large mock-up set to resemble an outdoor scene (like in "Gilligan's Island").

No, but I'd like to. However it probably won't be easy since you probably have to buy tickets to attend, and they probably cost mucho dinero. I don't remember how we got in; like I said, maybe my friend's family paid for everything. I'll have to ask my parents if they remember the details. All I know is that I was 14 1/2 at the time and was excited to witness the taping of a TV show (which I was a fan of at the time).

Channel 4 New York City.

And apparently that is the NBC affiliate over there, WNBC.

Similarly, the NBC affiliate in Los Angeles has the call sign of KNBC, which is also on channel 4!

I thought it was in 2012 or was that Summer Olympics? ???

That will be the Summer Olympics here in London.

That's right; the Summer Olympics are held in leap years, while the Winter Olympics are held in every other even-numbered year. It used to be that both the Summer and Winter Olympics were held in years divisible by 4, but after 1992 that changed. Beginning with 1994, Winter Olympics are only held in even-numbered years that are NOT leap-years. So after this year, the next Winter Olympics will be held in 2014.

I always enjoyed Summer Olympics.

I probably enjoyed it most in 1984 when they were in L.A. (so they were local to me). Even though I was 4 at the time I still have a few memories.

I have plenty of memories from when I was 10. For me, that year was 1990. Not an olympic year by any means, but I did lots of fun stuff.

In Swimming.

...which is a summer event.

I still want to learn how to swim well. I refused to learn how as a child because I was deathly afraid of going underwater.

LOL ;) Somewhat appropriate since he was a swimmer.

But hopefully Mark Driez himself off with towel after he gets out of the pool too.

To nally, carried over from another forum:
"Yeah, we have several missions out here in California. I even studied them in school 20 years ago"

What did you study about them?

Subject: Re: Miscellaneous

Written By: nally on 03/11/10 at 1:43 am

We studied their history, and their impact on what is now the state of California. (At the time they were built, beginning in the late 1700's, the land was still owned by Mexico, since California did not enter U.S. statheood until 1850.)

20 years ago I was in the 4th grade, and even though it was a rather dismal school year for me, there were some good things that came out of it. Like studying the California missions...and even visiting one on a field trip (namely, the San Fernando mission, since it was closest) on Groundhog Day of that year with my class.

Also, each of us in the class was assigned to build a model of a specific mission; I had to build a model of the "San Francisco de Solano"; I used sugarcubes to build the walls, and wooden sticks to make the tile roofs.
