I am thinking about Christmas a little.  We booked my mother-in-law's tickets for her to fly over for Christmas and New Year.  Also I am thinking about making a Christmas Cake in a few weeks time.

Well, I'm trying not to.  I'm not really big on the gift giving or getting.  Too much pressure I put on myself.  But I do love to decorate for the holidays, and this year I'll have a nice house to decorate.  I'm very much looking forward to that.  At least until the cats pull down all the decorations that I worked hard to put up.  ::)

I've been thinking about Halloween more than Christmas.  Most years when tricker treaters come around I'm outside with about 5 bags of candy and "It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" DVD playing on my old lap top.  (weather permitting of course.)

Laid off and no money ?

I work in construction, I never know when I am going to be laid off, or when I will be called back, so when I am working I budget with that understanding.  I don't live the high life when I am flush with cash, but I don't starve when lay off comes.

Or 209 and any fraction of days, depending on what time zone you're in.

I was just mentioning the amount of calendar days.

On a related note, during the late 1990s, I used to count down the number of days until the start of the year 2000; I wanted it to be special.

No. Sometime in 1995, I mathematically figured out how many days were left. Then I kept a little sign on my bulletin board which I would change daily. Every single day until December 31, 1999...when there was only 1 day left!

Yes, but Phineas & Ferb is a cartoon, and in the world of animation you can get away with just about anything.

Here's a clip of that episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nECdVj1X4mo

Santa appears at 1:44 in the chimney elevator; at 9:15 as he steals a giant magnet from Dr. Doofenshmirtz; and at 10:23 when he flies the giant magnet over the backyard to remove the robots.

My Mom hits up the after Christmas sales.  She doesn't like her cookie baking, house decorating, card writing mojo ruined by a migraine due to shopping. :)

You mean to tell me you like to procrastinate doing it? :D

Not a good tactic imho

that is true; if you start it a few months in advance, it'll get done quicker.

That's not what I'm saying at all! I prefer to leave it until the last. Which is the tactic I prefer and it's always suited me just fine ;)

I just don't think that I'd be able to pull it off myself....altho one year I waited until December the 23rd to do it. That was mainly due to other obligations.

No worries  ;)

I pretty much have a list and go by. Easy peasy and it works for me  :)

A list...that's always helpful.

Yeah, that one time I shopped on the 23rd...was in the year 2000. Final exams were the week before Christmas, the last of which I had on the evening of the 21st (a Thursday), and I also needed to spend parts of the week working on a final project for my computer class. So I wanted to do some the next day (22nd - Friday) but I got sick...and so I had to do it all on the morning/afternoon of the 23rd.

Actually...I do remember doing a little bit of shopping on the evening of the 21st, after I completed my exam, but my time was limited. I just did the bulk of it two days later.

Some four-and-a-half months before Christmas day, a range of festive goods is on sale at a top department store.

Selfridges Christmas shop traditionally opens in late August, but has launched earlier than ever this year to cash in on the tourist trade

They might do that pretty soon around here. Personally I think it's too early. I guess the good part about it is that they might want to encourage people to start doing their holiday shopping early to avoid the last-minute crowds. But I for one would like to enjoy the season of fall a little more and not be rushed into the winter stuff.

I agree with that...I wish they would wait a little longer.  I go to the grocery store this morning, and there it is...Christmas candy and decorations already on the shelves!  The Halloween candy is now piled into several shopping carts in front of the store at half off.

...and it's probably gonna be stale.

I was gonna go to the bookstore sometime this week (probably Barnes & Noble) to buy a gift for my mom, whose birthday is on the 21st of this month, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have Christmas-oriented anything there. My mom probably didn't see any Christmas stuff on public display before her birthday when she was growing up, but in the last 20 years it's just gotten earlier and earlier.

We already purchased our annual tree ornament for this year in September. I think it's a little bear.

I let my daughter pick out one every year.  I figure that way when she goes out on her own, she has her own special ornaments to take with her.

Yep, only a small area of the store, next to the Halloween decorations.  Probably last years stock trying to clear it out.

I bought the first presents today.  Three small plates.  I planned to make viennese mince pies as gifts for teachers etc and thought putting them on a Christmassy plate would give a nice keepsake.
