I was at the mall on Friday. Macy's already had their entire Christmas tree collection all decorated for the holidays. I can't believe it!

I'm worried that I won't be able to find a small tree. The stores seem to deal in 7 foot trees and above, and all I want is a 4 footer so the boy can decorate it.
I also have a few keepsake ornaments that I brought with me from California: the Santa Claus I made in kindergarten, Jason's first Christmas ornament, my Gone With the Wind collectible ornaments, and a little penguin in a car that I got in fifth grade. :) I don't like those trees that have to look so symmetrical and perfect. I'd rather have a tree with ornaments that have meaning to me and my family. My mom's tree topper is a 40+ year old angel that my grandfather brought back from Germany. She also has an assortment of other ornaments that he brought back. They're gorgeous, and I'm surprised they've survived our family.
/end rambling
that's how I am...my tree consists of antiques that were my parents and GREAT grandma's...some of them are very old. It's more of a hodge podge...but when all put together, it looks fantastic. Although, just thinking about the holiday season just makes me wanna cry. I'm not in the mood at all to even celebrate anything. :-\\

Not ready! Still looking for $$ for train tix for several trips to Chicago (for college visits) and for Micah's 18th birthday celebration (her b'day is 2 days before Christmas, so she'll celebrate on an earlier Saturday w/ her friends).
I expect to see decorations in the store about 3 days before Halloween.

I have a few thoughts on Christmas, but am more concerned with Halloween.
My favorite band is back in town, and I plan to go armed to the teeth.
I met the Tubes back about 5 yrs. ago, and I am gonna pull every string I may have, to get my ass up on stage with them!
Fee & I were kinda close for awhile, so I think I stand a sporting chance.

Ooh, what college is she thinking of?
First choice: Loyola Univ-Chicago
Others: Univ IL Chicago, Robert Morris (Chicago), Rockford College (Illinois), UNC-Charlotte, Cedar Crest College (Allentown, PA), Washington State Univ (Pullman, WA), and the school where I work Ferris State Univ (Big Rapids, MI)
We are going to Loyola (again) on Oct 13 and I think UIC in November, maybe Robert Morris in there somewhere and Cedar Crest over Spring Break unless my parents have other ideas for her.

Try Walmart and Kmart, they usually have small artificial trees.

Excellent! I hope she gets into the college she really wants! I wanted hubby to get in the graduate program in San Diego, but here we are in Chicago (he goes to the University of Chicago), and you know what? I wouldn't change it for the world. Chicago is an awesome city. :)

It will probably be Walmart then. Surprisingly, they don't have Christmas stuff out yet. Just Costco. But Costco has a pretty Advent Calendar that I wish I could afford.

My Mum bought me a little tree about 3 or 4 ft tall that I used to have for my bedroom. I still have most of the ornaments I used to put on it. My Nan bought me a little set of teddy bears in different colours to go on it which I still have.
I have actually bought a couple of christmas gifts but I was thinking I really ought to sit down and work out what I need to get and figure out what my budget is as ever money is tight this year and I have three birthdays before christmas to buy for and three in january as well...................

I always used to get my little trees at one of the local Dollar Stores. But last year I did get my little 3 foot at Wal-Mart (or was it the year before...can't remember).

We got a darling tree for our apt at Walmart....fiberoptic. Then I bought mini colored balls and a couple boxes of sports themed (naturally just the football and basketball went on the tree!) ornaments. All of the "traditional" ornaments of years past go on the tree my parents have because we spend Micah's birthday and Christmas with them.

Thank you for your kind wishes. We both love Chicago very much. I was hoping to make a weekend out of it, but the hotel I want to stay at is completely booked. I would love it if she got into Loyola--the opportunities (academic and otherwise) are outstanding. I would definitely be down about 1 weekend a month and she could come home for pork chops and green bean casserole any weekend she wanted (though I don't expect to see her home very often if she gets in down there!).

I went to our local crafts store yesterday and they had a nice holiday section up, mostly Halloween/Thanksgiving. I was surprised they hadn't gone on the Christmas bandwagon just quite yet. I am hoping this year we can go to some haunted houses (themed) like we did last year. That was fun!

My daughter is. She started talking about where we might put the Christmas tree in this house and what decorations we might have. We left all of our stuff in the UK so I've got to buy everything!
I need to get organised in terms of buying presents so they can be sent over in good time (or perhaps get everything via Amazon). Still not sure if we are going to go back to the UK this year. We'd like to but the children's school holiday is so short we might not be able to.

I pretty much know what I'm going to get Jason. He's into trains, and Costco has a HUGE train set with a table and storage drawers. It's pretty expensive, and that's all he would get from us. My mom and dad are going to send some gifts and give us a chunk of change as well, with the stipulation we spend it on ourselves (we have the tendency to go without so Jason could have things).
That's pretty much it. After moving (and just being broke in general), we can't afford much more beyond that. Not like the boy cares though. He'd be just as happy with dollar store stuff, but I KNOW he'd love that train set. :)

I have to do some pondering this year.
I discovered not too long ago that Melissa enjoys Ralph Waldo Emerson.
9 1/2 yrs. together, and I just now discover this.
Teela...I figure, some Polly Pocket dolls, some Bobby Jack clothes, and a little music for her, and she's good to go.
Me, on the other hand.....let's just say that some of my "wishes" have been there for decades, and still haven't happened.
Feel free to ask me, about any of these.

Well, that's more of a "Christmas miracle".
Actually, one of them is a sundial.
I collect Old World objects.
I also have wanted a fob-watch, or pocket watch, as we Americans call them.
One with Roman numerals, preferrably.

Similar thing at my work, a collegue came round with a menu and asked me what I wanted for my work's christmas lunch. I chose prawn cocktail, chicken in red wine, and chocolate orange profiteroles. Typing that at this time in the morning makes me feel sick.... :P

I always had that problem, too, with Micah's being Dec. 23. When she was about 7 (maybe 6), she told me that she only wanted to open a couple of presents on her birthday and the rest on Christmas because Christmas is the most important birthday, not hers. Now that she is older (18 this year), she pretty much knows what she is getting, just not when (I manage a surprise, but not many). Sometimes she will tell me what to wrap in birthday paper and what to wrap in Christmas paper. ::) My mom's b'day is Jan. 4. She was so excited about what I got her last year that I'm afraid this year is going to be a let down (she was still talking about it in June).

My mom's best friend's birthday is Christmas Day. Don't know how she fared, but I always try to send a birthday card. My mom always complained that she was short-changed because her birthday is Jan 4. I personally think part of the problem is that she was a twin, they were born right around the depression, and they already had 2 older brothers. :)

;D Don't worry about Micah. ::) That child celebrates all month. We have always made it a big deal. Now that she's older, it's easier....one party w/ the friends and then celebrate on her b'day w/ family. When she was younger, there was the party at the daycare, the party at school, the party with the friends, and then the family celebration. (Plus she is the only child/grandchild/niece!)

And, if some people know certain addresses, then can it be considered a "true" Secret Santa?
I shall have to give it more thought.

I don't know really. I think it's just that over the past few years rarely in my immediate family (mom and dad and bro and hubby) - they don't really celebrate it. I mean mom puts up a tree and I put up a little tree (Hubby and I, and brother and I, don't exchange gifts) and we've never really been big on holiday traditions anyways.
I guess I'd like one of those "movie christmasses" just once. You know, where everybody breaks out into song and goes ice skating on the frozen-over pond and comes in and has hot chocolate?
Yeah, I know it's unrealistic. It just seems like, nobody wants to be happy in my family much anymore.
It's kinda stressful.

It's kinda stressful.
lol you are too funny!
:\'( You make me feel so sad for you. I couldn't not exchange gifts, I love buying things for people. Can't you and your husband plan something special this year just for you maybe?

Yeah I think I'm gonna ask hubby if he would mind if we did something for Christmas. Not entirely sure what yet, but something. He's really easy going with me so he will probably agree. I just gotta come up with something. He even agreed to help me decorate our porch this year. I'm so short, I have to stand on a chair to wrap the lights on the porch pole. Things are looking up. It never occured to me to JUST ASK. Otherwise, he assumes I don't want to do anything. ;D

You need to celebrate Christmas with my family!
......Unfortunately, no real snow here.
You are very sweet!
We didn't have snow either here last year (as I recall), I think it was like 20 below zero (seriously) and our car died. Not a fun winter. lol
I'm thinking maybe if we volunteer at the soup kitchen or something that'll mean something. I'd like to maybe do up some food baskets or get a couple names off the tree at the mall this year to get toys and books and stuff to the less fortunate kids.
I'm starting to get really excited now...I have a purpose! I was feeling a little lost there for awhile.

You and your hubby can come hang with us. The Midway park thingy has an ice skating rink in December, and while you won't find my fat ass on it, I'm sure everyone else would love to go. :D
You are so cool chicka! You know I wanna come to Chi-town sometime and meet you guys. I'm not real sure when we'll get out that way, but definately on the list of places and people I wanna go and meet. Jason is a cutie pie.
I'm not really a skater either, although if I did fall, I have plenty of padding to cushion any falls. I couldn't even manage to roller skate back when I was a kid, let alone ice skate. But I like watching the skaters, even if I'm not graceful in this lifetime. ;D

U. S. Post Office website had last years date...just needed to adjust the dates a little
Packages being sent to all Air - Army Post Office or Fleet Post Office ZIP codes using Parcel Post, the most economical service, should be mailed no later than Monday, November 13th 12th. Letters and cards being sent by First-Class Mail to American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan should be mailed by December 4th 3rd in order to arrive in time for the holidays. Remember, all packages and mail must be addressed to individual service members.

I certainly miss all that. It NEVER feels /seems like Christmas here. No snow, little in the way of lights around the outsides of peoples houses (compared to N. America) .... no 'wonderland'. I'll have to get back over there some future year around Christmas to re-live all that !

We were discussing what presents we could buy people over the weekend. We are going to try and make the most of the decent (for us) exchange rate and get most things here. Then when we've delivered the presents we'll be able to fill our suitcase with things (food) we can't find here.
Also I bought some more decorations at the weekend. I might pick some more up this week, I've noticed one or two places advertising last years stock at reduced prices.

You can post something without them knowing who its from can't you?
Quirk could collect names and addresses of willing participants and Vaughn could help her draw names out of the hat. She would then pm you the name and address of the person for whom you are to be secret santa.

You don't know who you are getting a present from or even when or what...but once you do get something...well I mean..it's still a surprise, just like if you would do a secret santa gift for a club...you usually find out who it's from when you open it.

Yeah, we did a gift exchange on another board one year. One of the members picked the names and then just PM'd the names to everyone. Since she wanted to participate, her husband helped her with her secret Santa picks. :) We didn't find out who our Secret Santa was until they sent the present. It worked out great. :)

That's funny, because Cadbury Chocolate is available in the U.S. and it is really good (as I recall), although I haven't had any in a long time.
I think Hershey's make Cadbury here, which is amusing in itself.

Never heard of them, but I think I saw something similiar in a video store once, you pressed a button and they lit up from inside, but they were a shaped lollipop. Seemed a little over-the-top for my taste, but I would have love them back-in-the-days when I was eating lollies. Heck now they do all kinds of things...spin, turn different colors, play music. I remember being impressed by a lollipop (as a kid) that you could blow through and it was like a whistle/flute.
I must admit to looking forward to seeing the Christmas lights and decorations. I love when people decorate their homes/businesses.

I'm almost always in the mood for Christmas, but I resist the urge to think about it or watch/listen to anything Christmas-related until the beginning of November because I don't want it to get old. It's already lost some of its magic, unfortunately, simply because I've already experienced it 30 times ;D But I try to do something a little different each year to make it special... and of course make sure I do the traditional things as well. Even still, 60 years from now, it will STILL be my favorite time of year.

This year, we're trying something way different. Instead of buy oodles of crap for everyone in the family, stuff no one really wants. We're gonna only buy 1 gift for 1 family member. So, getting one good gift on Christmas Day as opposed to 5 mediocre or just plain rubbishy gifts. And probably spend less too.
I think rather than expect to spend 100s of dollars on terrible gifts that no one really wants, this is a better way. And it takes away the "commercial" aspect of Christmas that is the opposite of what it should be about. You're not spending all december in a crowded shopping mall either.
So yeah, see how that works out.

Probably a higher chance they'll like it if you spend more time and money on that one person.

With the economy the way it is, I don't think retailers are going to have a good year. Instead of kids getting x-boxes they may get tinker toys.

The retailers always do better with the January Sales.

Some shops do bring the sales forward to catch the Christmas shoppers, but it is not the same.

This is going to sound very penny pinching, but Jason's Christmas presents will essentially be paid for by himself. You see, he modeled for a catalog at my mom's work (school supply company), so he got a $150 credit through them. My mom also gets a 40% discount, so that amounts to quite a bit. We're going to strictly stick with crafty stuff (paper, paints, markers, clay, etc), and maybe some Legos.
I'm looking forward to the cooking aspect of the holidays. I LOVE to cook, and I have a whole new set of recipes lined up so I can force feed everyone. ;D
