I've never seen that entire 1978 remake, partly because i thought the original was perfect  ;D  I got into the commentary on Lord Of The Rings Extended DVD with 2 extra DVDs per movie, so that's 6 total. that was awesome, but I only wanted to do that with those films.

I remember a French(language) teacher bringing a Piaf record to school and talking about her. The teacher, whose name I forget, and studied in Paris and knew all about Piaf.  It was the year she(Piaf) died and my teacher was very upset when it happened and told us about Piaf(well, the parts you could tell in school in 1963) and played a record.

We just got back from seeing "The condemned" starring Stone Cold Steve Austin and probably a bunch of other wrestlers that I didn't recognize.  I did recognize that they snuck in alot of those familiar wrestling moves as that is what most of the actors are trained in.

It had a surprisingly good story and was action-y enough to keep my interest, although they had a bit too much of that damn "jiggle-cam" style of directing.  http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/01/barf.gif http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/08/puke.gif

Speaking of jiggle cam...I was watching Flight 93 or one of those movies on HBO the other day and what I think they were trying to do is flim the movie from the perspective of someone who was on the flight.  So everytime the plane jumped around the camera would bounce all over too.  I thought it was a bad idea...we get the picture, just show us what is happening in the place from a steady camera.

Oh I love that movie!  That's the one about the newspaper and the Japanese couple who stop to use the payphone, right?  I've seen that twice now and recorded it off of HBO.  Good stuff.  (I LOVE subtitles because I can't hear very well, so at least with subtitles, I can get the dialogue as it's intended to be heard.)

Watched Valley Girl for the first time, yesterday...

Pretty good movie.  Definately a time capsule...

The focus of the movie, Julie (Deborah Foreman) has the biggest, prettiest smile I've seen on screen.  I mean, I couldn't take my eyes off her.  Made me want to pinch her cheeks and go, "coogie woogie smookle poo..."

Last night went to see La MĂ´me,the story of Edit Piaf. Very sad :\'(
by weird coincidence, this was the flick they showed for film club. (although they're calling it "la vie en rose" here.) i thought it was awesome! very sad, but very well done.

i heard it was gonna be a long-ass biopic of edith piaf and i was like, oi, god, is it too late to kill myself? but i totally idolize edith piaf now. i have a soft spot for talented drunks.

and Marion Cotillard totally deserves an oscar. that scene when she finds out about what's-his-name and the plane crash... just amazing.

well, if they do, it's not like anyone will know. ;)

it's pretty funny, where i saw it, it's actually a film geek club thing so afterward we had kinda a discussion session and it was one of these movies people either loved or hated. i totally idolized it, but a lot of people were FURIOUS at it. cuz it's totally out of chronological order and has lots of times where you think it's going to end but it doesn't.

i like a lot of movies where nothing happens. like my all-time favorite movie, "the passenger." something like 140 minutes long, and i swear to god, not a single thing happens in it. and yet it's perfect, i love it so much.

i had the best moviegoing experience when i saw the passenger (the second of three times :o) in the theater... they were having an antonioni series at the smithsonian east wing gallery, which has a great theater, one of the best screens in d.c., i saw l'avventura and a bunch of other antonioni stuff there, including some of his obscure t.v. work and his model shoots! real collector stuff. and it was always like, me and a couple bushy-haired nerdy guys covered with chalk. totally empty theater. but when they showed the passenger it was PACKED. cuzza jack nicholson, i assume. so i had to lie on the floor with my feet against the screen. i thought it would be a crap way to watch a movie but it was perfect. barcelona was so... I enjoyed L'Avventura, but of the trilogy i actually preferred L'Eclisse,Monica Vitti's performance on that one blew me away, the african dance scene...oh lord that was the sexiest thing in the world, plus Alain Delon excels as shallow playboy. Oh and have you watched the 2nd one,La Notte?with Marcello and Jeanne Moreau? It was so upsetting, specially the golf course scene, with the letter reading,i cried my eyes out through that all part.

l'avventura i think was the only one i've seen. :-[ i'll get right on that, i don't want to get in trouble.

there's this shot in l'avventura when the dialog is happening on a boat at anchor, and antonioni puts the camera on the dock rather than shoot the action from the deck of the boat. so while they're talking they're going up and down from the motion of the waves. it's great, that sense of distance, yanno? creates this sense of tension and that sense of their getting absorbed into something larger while they're looking for their missing friend. and meanwhile reminds you of the presence of the camera.

that scene in la vie en rose when edith finds out her husband died? you know something's wrong because the camera tracks her all the way when she goes to get him his coffee and toast from the kitchen. i remember thinking, oh, man, something's up. because the director's getting weird, making us think about the camera.

l'avventura i think was the only one i've seen. :-Il Desserto Rosso, some say it's numero quattro that ends the series, but i doubt it i liked it better than L'Ecclise. Most of my friends hate Antonioni, they call his films slow and uneventful,me i love his style...sometimes i can't believe that they are from 30/40 years ago, films like that are timeless, they'll never get old 8)

Guess the thing I didn't like about The Thin Red Line is that it was hard to follow.  Just when it was getting interesting they would switch to a scene of the guys girlfriend/wife walking in a field with a flowing dress.  Well at least that's how I felt when it first came out...maybe I would have a different opinion of it now.

Subject: Re: What was the very last movie you saw...

Written By: Tia on 05/22/07 at 12:05 pm

it's definitely not for every taste, it's very internalized and non-linear. people were complaining about the edith piaf movie, too, because it was totally told out of order and you'd get lost in the flashbacks. but that was sorta the point, in both TRL and the piaf flick, that the characters were ALSO lost in their own memories, so the movie wasn't trying to tell a story so much as make you feel the way the characters did. folks expecting a movie that tells a story are likely to get frustrated by that.

it's funny because tarantino pulls the same stunt in reservoir dogs and pulp fiction, telling the same story multiple times, all out of order and from these different points of view, but nobody ever gets quite as frustrated. probably because of all the guns, blood and titties.

The thing that I really didn't like about it, was its a movie about the Pacific war, yet the movie was about the Army.  Just disappoints me when good Pacific war movie comes out and doesn't portray the Marines as say, Saving Private Ryan did.  However, I enjoyed Flags of our Fathers.  I dont need alot of battle in a war movie, but The Thin Red Line was just a little boring to me.

At least Stephen Speilburg and Tom Hanks are making a Band of Brothers type HBO mini series about the Pacific War.  I think that should be good.

Flags of our Fathers goes into the horrors of war and the aftermath that people returning from wars go through.  Plus it shows that America is good at waving the flag for our "Heroes" but discarding them when we are through.

Black Hawk Down was good.  Pretty interesting how unknown this battle in Somalia was.

I know, originally the bomb was in Denver.. etc..etc.. all manner of other things, but then again, they always make the films slightly different, which quite often I actually appreciate, I'd rather at least have a few plot twists I wasn't expecting than know exactly what's going to happen.

I want Red Storm Rising to be made in to a film, that's his best book.

The bomb in D.C. was entertaining, of course they had to have Ryan close to the action.  Ben Affleck did alright as Ryan in my opinion.  Its just tough going from Harrison Ford, who I liked in the part.  However, I like Alec Baldwin back in Hunt for Red October as well.  I think Harrison Ford could have continued through to Debt of Honor and Executive Orders, but I understand how they wanted to make him a bit younger again.

I think my main problem in it is that it didn't show the support Chavez and Mr. Clark give Ryan after Clear and Present Danger.  Which is a very important point in the story in my opinion.

Yes, Red Storm Rising was an excellent book.  Without Remorse would probably be a good movie too.

Red Storm Rising, Without Remorse, Rainbow Six and Executive Orders are my favorite books by him so far.

Ben Affleck was fine as Ryan, I rate Affleck, I think he's a decent actor. Not as good as Harrison Ford of course, but hey, who is? That's freakin Han!

Well, there was none of the buildup really.. just.. 'Bang, in to the story' which is..ok I guess, seeing as having the rest of the story included would have made it about a 5 hour film.  ;D

I never got in to Rainbow Six but I can agree with the others.

I always wanted to see Twister at a drive-in theater since there is a scene in the movie involving drive-ins.

Just curious, how do you feel about "Jarhead" as a Marine?  2 guys got into a major discussion about it in my Eng class this past semester....

i had the same feeling when i saw the poseidon adventure remake. it was just nonstop horrifying suffering, people drowning and getting smashed to pieces and falling to their death. the old disaster/horror movies had kinda an angle of fun or characterization to take the edge off but nonstop violence is really just kinda miserable.

i mean it wasn’t a bad movie, 28 weeks later,  and i actually liked it -- the whole iraq war subtext was interesting -- but dag, throw in a joke or something people! at the end i just felt totally depressed.

This was basically a film of the stage show-which is really cool. And it was soooo 60s (in terms of hair styles and such). There was a fairly young Bill Macy (of Maude fame) in it too. The funny thing is, most things that were risque back then seem very tame by today's standards but this IMO is still kind of risque.

Hot Fuzz AGAIN at a late viewing last night, still laughed like a drain.  ;D

I LOVED that one.  We saw that last week.  But then, I love most anything Simon Pegg does anyways.  We're thinking about going back to see it again as well.
