The science of weather forecasting


It was October and the Indians on a remote reservation asked their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild.

Since he was a chief in a modern society he had never been taught the old secrets.  When he looked at the sky he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like.
Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared.

But being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea.  He went to the phone booth, called the national weather service and asked, "Is the coming winter going to be cold?"
"It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold," the meteorologist at the weather service responded.So the chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared.

A week later he called the national weather service again. "Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?"

"Yes," the man at national weather service again replied, "It's going to be a very cold winter."The chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find.

Two weeks later the chief called the national weather service again.  Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?"


"Absolutely," the man replied.  "It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters ever."

"How can you be so sure?" the chief asked. The weatherman replied, "The Indians are collecting firewood like crazy."

We're suppose to be getting thunderstorms. So, it appears they are on their way. It must be a tropical storm, it's rather warm outside.

We have been under a wind advisory since yesterday (gusts up around 40 mph) and we are under a winter weather advisory.  There was wet snow on the car this morning and yesterday and today it has rained, sleeted, and possibly snowed.  We did see a rainbow yesterday afternoon, though.

We're at a sunny 66F in California. It was pretty chilly this morning though, with some coastal fog from the bay.

A little on the warm side in southern California, with highs in the 70s.

It started out nice and cool this morning, but now the temperature's already up to 81 degrees!  Blech!  :P

Not bad, a little cooler, lower 70's.

Started out hot and dry with 25°C and nor-westers. Now the wind has changed, cloud has arrived and the temperature has dropped 15° in the last couple of hours.

Right now it is not too cold outside for November at 55 degrees but it is rainy.

it's a little bit cool tonight, but unusually clear. as we were driving home we could see the Oakland Bay Bridge all lit up as it leads to San Francisco and the city was totally lit up, I wish I could have taken a pic to post.

A bright and breezy day with sunshine at times, but a few showers, locally heavy, mainly near the coast. Many inland parts should stay dry.

A muggy 84 degrees!  This sucks!  :P

Becoming rather cloudy, with scattered showers persisting. One or two of these locally heavy, and edging a little further inland.

A low pressure clipper system is due to settle in over the southern portion of the state.  It'll probably give us another inch of snow overnight.

The trees outside my flat belong to the local council and are pruned every half year.

It is like a cold day in February, since it is December it does not bode well for the rest of the winter

36°F; touch of a southwesterly wind; scattered high, thin clouds.  Good to see the sun again!  :)  Though I hate it when it snows, then melts within a couple days, snows again, melts again, etc.  I'd rather the snow stick around.  It's prettier than brownish-green grass and lots of mud!  :)

It has been very cold this morning! And according to the weather report I saw in the newspaper, it's not supposed to get very warm today. Right now I'm still wearing my coat and scarf, even though I'm indoors.

My windsheild was frozen as was our rooft had frost on it. When I got to work it was only 40F, now it's up to 45F. Today's high is suppose to be 57F.

As usual, the local media is making it sound like a blizzard.  It's just a mild storm.  We might get as much as eight inches where I am, but not more, and there's little wind so it won't drift.

However, it doesn't take much to make driving conditions dangerous, so I left work at 1:00.  Gee whiz, I sure hated to do that!

It's not the slick roads and dimished visibility that scare me, it's the all the idiots driving on the icy roads in the snow who shouldn't even be allowed to operate a bumpercar.

Still on the cold side. While the sun is out, it is still breezy outside. I have been wearing my coat and scarf (and gloves, if need be) when I've gone outside.
