Subject: Ohio passes it's own Patriot Act; can't you hear the jackboots tromping!

A bill on Gov. Bob Taft's desk right now is drawing a lot of criticism, NewsChannel5 reported.
One state representative said it resembles Gestapo-style tactics of government, and there could be changes coming on the streets of Ohio's small towns and big cities.
The Ohio Patriot Act has made it to the Taft's desk, and with the stroke of a pen, it would most likely become the toughest terrorism bill in the country. The lengthy piece of legislation would let police arrest people in public places who will not give their names, address and birth dates, even if they are not doing anything wrong.
WEWS reported it would also pave the way for everyone entering critical transportation sites such as, train stations, airports and bus stations to show ID.
"It brings us frighteningly close to a show me your papers society," said Carrie Davis of the ACLU, which opposes the Ohio Patriot Act.
There are many others who oppose the bill as well.
"The variety of people who opposed to this is not just a group of the usual suspects. We have people far right to the left opposing the bill who think it is a bad idea," said Al McGinty, NewsChannel5?s terrorism expert.
McGinty said he isn't sure the law would do what it's intended to do.
"I think anything we do to enhance security and give power to protect the public to police officers is a good idea," he said. "It is a good law in the wrong direction."
Gov. Bob Taft will make the ultimate decision on whether to sign the bill.
WEWS was told that Taft is expected to sign the bill into law, but legal experts expect that it will be challenged in courts.

Can't you hear the jackboots tromping
It really is a crying shame
It's the Right who do the stomping
And the Left wot gets the blame...
..or something like that

Philbo, good poem! I like! ;D
You should know, however, that the whole "left v. right" battle is just another of many shadow plays. Both sides are tyrants of different sorts. The right will let you own property and do with it what you want (as long as it increases the property values), but they won't let you smoke dope or drink too much or look at porn. The left will let you smoke dope, drink, and look at porn, but they want to put you up on a 10x10 hole in the wall and tax your livelihood so much that you have just enough to bring home groceries.
I guess that the right wants you too busy to indulge in drink, drugs and porn, and the left will let you indulge in drink, drugs and porn so that you'll not notice your squalor and slavery too much. Just my opinion.

Yeah I heard about this on channel 5 yesterday. It sounds rediculous to me. I know Taft will sign it. I would say this is unconstitutional and should be shot down in the courts.

You simply forgot the worst parts of the left, their war on property, God and guns.
God? God said thou shalt not kill and Jesus said to give away all your property and follow Him. So obviously, God & Son are comme peaceniks!
The illegal drug trade and pornography are both great jobs programs. The government subsidizes price inflation for cocaine, heroin, pot, and meth via prohibition. The giant media conglomerates from Verizon to Ramada invest are the biggest peddlers of smut. Furthermore, porn is a jobs program for young women the way selling crack is a jobs program for young men. A nineteen year old can make more college money in a single video taped sex session than she can in a month of a full-time low-wage straight job. She doesn't even have to be at video star level like Jenna Jameson. She can just appply to any number of perverted misogynists who sell their smut wares over the internet!
I mean, the among the big lies the Right tells is they're against drugs and pornography while being in favor of job opportunities. Guys like Gingrich, Kemp, and Romney are all talk. In fact, the big business interests to which the Right kow-tows offshore so many jobs they create "enterprise voids" not "enterprise zones"!

The Ohio Gov might sign this abomination, but I will volunteer to get arrested under it for refusing to show "my papers" if the ACLU wants to challenge it, at my own expense.

Sorry to hear that. :( My state just can't catch a break anymore. Between the 2004 election, Governor Taft's troubles and our connections to the Jack Abramoff scandal, our national image is shot to hell! Why can't California or some other state blow up and take the spotlight off of us for a while? Sheesh...

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.
Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?
Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?
Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.
Hey Philbo, care to rewrite the lyrics?

I love CSN, but this song used to get on my nerves during my school days. Now and then I would talk to someone who knew nothing else about Ohio...but they knew that song! It's as though Ohio's national identity is solely defined by its past mistakes.
I guess I'm a little protective of my home state's reputation. The good news is that I don't live in West Virginia. Just kidding...

Oh geez, I have realitives back in Meigs County Ohio. They're your average everyday tobbacco chewing, gun totting, so close to the boarder of West Virginia we are selves can't even tell the deference kind of Buckeyes. One should wait for the public out cry and the courts to put that measure to rest. This has gone too far. >:(

I can understand that. My dealings with Ohio was bit more on the personal side. My ex was from there and I had to deal with the courts in the state when I sued my ex-in laws (and won ;D ;D ;D )

Which reminds me of something. I remember a political cartoon entitled "dueling axes" that had an elephant (republican) and a donkey (democrat) chopping down a tree that represented the bill of rights. The republican ax said "war on drugs" and the democrat ax said "war on guns."
Hey...I'm a Democrat who believes in God. And remember, guns, in the hands of criminals and kids, are not safe.

I have to wonder if Orwell's "1984" is required reading for Ohio high-school students...it should be, because it's happening right where they live!
This bill is bad news. This is taking the Patriot Act to unnecessary extremes!
