Subject: Bush and the Strict Constructionists
Written By: danootaandme on 09/10/05 at 5:48 am
The US Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit in Richmond has decided that the President has the power to imprison, and hold without charge, an American citizen arrested on American soil, without trial. It is the case of Jose Padilla who has been held on suspicion of plotting with Al Qaeda. They lack the proof but are holding him as an enemy combatant. How would a strict constructionist interpret this:
Amendment VI
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.

It is quite apparent that this Administration is destroying the Constitution. If you haven't seen it yet, you should watch the film Unconstitutional: The War on Our Civil Liberties. It is great film and hopefully open some people's eyes to what this Administration is doing to our Civil Liberties.

I've said before that I don't agree with everything the president does. Here is proof.

Well, they're only "strict constructionists" when it is convenient to their reactionary social agenda. When the text of the Constitution denies them the right to push around the people they want to push around, then "strict constructionist" becomes "re-constructionist"!
These were the dipsy-doodles who wanted to amend the Constitution just to stop gays from getting hitched!
