I belong to local 3180 of the American Federation of Teachers, have been a member of the delagate assembly (we have 4 chapters, one on each capmus of the Vt state Colleges, and this is our governing body), served ass chapter chair for three terms, been on the bargaining team for 4 contracts, and continue to serve as the chapter grievance officer.
My old pappy told me, as a kid, "if there is a unioin where you work, join it, if there isn't, organize one".
Admittedly, working in the public sector, things are different that what most workers encounte, and especially working in education, where my knowledge and skills are the "commodity" to be delivered to our "customers" (I hate are resist those words in the context of what I do). Nevertheless, we do, occasionally, have issues with the local administration, with which I deal. In my experience, the union is a protector against arbitrary and capricious acts of the administration, but not a malicious force. Sop our relationship is more often concilliatory than antagonistic, notthat I am not willing to go to the mat. As lomg as I am grievance officer, the admin knows that I am willing to do that. And I usually win.

Yes...when I worked at Bally's Park Place Hotel-Casino,I was a member of the Hotel,Bartenders, and Restaurant Workers Union....Local 54. The local made me,as a disabled person, feel welcome at my job,and when business was too slow for me to work year round, they made sure I was taken care of,and hired during the summer months....which in my area is better than nothing...

Never have been part of a union-only because I never worked in a place that had one. And to honest, I hope that I don't because that means that I would have to (gulp) work which is something I don't intend to do if I can help it.

Just out of curiousity....were you harrassed by Union members? I remember there were numerous reports of harassment of non-union workers by Local 54 members during the recent hotel-casino strike in Atlantic City.....
BTW the strike basically failed because the Union did not get the concessions they asked for.....greedy management once again looking out for their own a**es!

I'll answer that in two parts, Tony20fan4ever .
1. No we were not harassed. The Teamsters' picket line was basically a bunch of middle-aged men and women who sat out at the entrance in lawn chairs. They were ladies and gentlemen about it. They even kindly moved out of our way when we came thru to mow the lawn.
2. It's a free market out there. If management "won" the strike, then it means that they were confident that they could get the work done on their terms either with or without the teamsters. Its funny... people shop around for the cheapest prices between stores and merchants all the time and that's called "shopping", but when management tries to do the same thing its called "union busting" and "greedy".

Absolutiely right. I for one am sick of union members who talk the union talk, then walk the Wal-Mart walk,
and I am not too shy to let them know it.
