I'd say 1975 sums up old school scifi writer's expectations.  How soon is 1984?

if you were to go back in time and bring forth a 30s sci-fi writer and show him our world, he would kill himself because his art deco fantasy was just that, a fantasy.

It seems like we might be as close to 1984 as we'll ever be... it's really a matter of politics since the technology in that book wasn't all that impressive from what I remember.
