But the bath salts you buy for $10.00 at Bed, Bath, and Beyond?  They won't make your kids high any more than nutmeg or banana peels will.  The "bath salts" (scare quotes deliberate) that your kids pay $10.00 a gram for at That Place That Only Sells Tobacco Pipes?  Yeah.  Much like the crack pipes cute little roses in the glass containers at the gas station, some things aren't exactly what they're labeled.

But suppose you'd engineered a chemical that had the same effects as some naughty-chemical, but was legal because it wasn't completely identical, and therefore hadn't been banned yet?  

Now, suppose everybody knew what you'd engineered and why you'd done it.

Now, further suppose you sold it as a drug - wait, you'd get arrested for that.

So you go to plan B.  You sell it as bath salts.  And you label it "not for human consumption".  That way, nobody can sue you if they consume it and something bad happens, because hey, you said "not for human consumption".  And if it gets banned, hey, you just pull it off the market until you figure out how to hang another largely-inert ~mumble~ group off the molecule without changing its psychoactive effect, and then you could lather, rinse, repeat.

This is not a new phenomenon.  It's been going on for 30+ years.  The Frozen Addicts is a NOVA documentary that describes a link between some backroom chemists who accidentally - due to poor lab technique that contaminated their MPPP with MPTP, thereby permanently frying their customers' motive centers - and inadvertently discovering one of the keys to understanding Parkinson's Disease... back in 1982.

Without getting too political, it's one of the reasons I support legalization, or at least decriminalization.  The harder the government makes it to find the drugs with known side effects, the more profitable it makes it for asshats to crank out drugs with unknown side effects.  I ddn't take a chemistry class past high school, and it scared the hell out of me that I remembered the story, the CNS pharma researcher who wrote the blog remembered the story, but the guy actually in the lab didn't.

Don't hate the drug.  Don't hate the druggie.  Hate with the fire of a million suns the underground chemist who generates the untested/untestable stuff, and hate with the fire of a billion galaxies the legal system that makes it profitable for him to do so without knowing the effects of his chemicals on his customers.  

The last legitimate underground chemists were those who hung out at an old missile silo, and they've been in jail for decades.  But their bastard children are the reason you get treated like a criminal every fracking time you have a runny nose.  Pseudoephedrine is a safe and effective decongestant.  Phenylephrine is no better than placebo.  The bastards that made that the law that says you have to hand over your driver's license every time you have a cold because someone figured out how to turn the OTC medicine into meth?  Well, the last time I checked, the goddamn meth-heads still roam the streets like zombies, but I've gotta a hand over my driver's license just to get an OTC decongestant?   So if we're talking hate, when I've got a cold, the energy output of the entire universe doesn't come close.
