Are you trying to tell me that are not any deer to be seen?

They are lyrics to a song called "The Second Week of Deer Camp" by a group called Da Yoopers. (They also did a sequal called "The Second Week of Deer Camp, Part 2")  Everytime I see this thread, that song pops into my head.

Deer Attacks, Kills His Owner in N.Y.
By Associated Press

ELLENBURG, N.Y. - A deer being kept in a pen attacked and killed his owner Sunday, state police said.

The buck that killed Ronald Donah, 43, was among about a half dozen deer penned up on his property in Ellenburg, about 180 miles north of Albany, said state Trooper Joseph House.

Details of Donah's injuries and what may have prompted the attack were not available Sunday.

Maureen Wren, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Conservation, said Donah had a license to keep the white tail deer on his property but did not know why he was doing so.

She said deer attacks, at least in the wild, are extremely rare.

Donah was taken to CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, where he died. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

why was the doofus keeping a deer penned up? ::) ???

Many reasons, but the usual reason is because of when the young deer is still dependent on it's mother and the mother is killed by a vehicle or natural predators.  Hunting season occurs in NYS after the young deer are weaned and able to survive on their own.  If, during this period between birth and their being independent, they would be an easy target for coyotes and the like.

I'm trying to get details of why this guy had a dozen penned.  The "rut" is starting here in NY state right now, and anybody that has half a brain should have known not to walk into a pen with an adult buck and "his" does.  While most people view deer as meek, they are far from it, and will become highly aggressive at certain times of the year.  Their strength is astounding to say the least, and their ability to survive mishaps that would kill a human would amaze you.  Many deer have been viewed leaping from cliffs of 25 feet or more, landing at the bottom and running away.  Part of this ability is due to the fact that a deers front legs are not "jointed" where they connect to it's chest.

Anyway, special permits have to be issued by the NYS DEC in order to have a deer in a penned enclosure, and they are usually granted only for the reason specified above, you are not allowed to raise deer for the purpose of consumption, unless you apply for the commercial type license and then you would not have as few as a dozen of them, nor do I believe that you are allowed in NYS to raise white tail deer for this purpose.  Fallow deer and certain stags are allowed to be raised commercially for human consumption but the hoops required to be jumped through in order to obtain a permit make most, even wealthy people shy away from it.

Don't know where you live but it's a common problem up here.  Last deer I hit with my truck I had just gotten up to 55, hit the deer squarely and it skidded about 250 yards down the road, or the same amount of distance it took me to stop.  Anyway, didn't want it to go to waste, so dressed it out and since it was a warm late September day, stuffed 4 bags of ice in the cavity to keep it from spoiling.

When I went to butcher it a couple days later, there was less than 5 pounds of meat that was wasted due to the collision.....they're remarkably tough animals.

As a joke up here, we don't talk about "if" we've hit a deer or not, our discussions are about how many we've hit....some people have hit a dozen or more in just a few years...

Back to topic...all raccoons I've heard will just chatter up a storm, usually when they're in a calm state they don't make much noise at all....

The deer I'm referring to was still alive after being hit broadside and after skidding down the road, I had to kill it myself.

Oh!!! Those poor turkey vultures, denied the simple pleasures of a meal all because of some big bad hunter!!  Maybe I should go out and buy a cow from a slaughterhouse to compensate.....

We used to be able to get moose meat from a local butcher-and all the moose meat came from road kill. When someone hits a moose (or the moose hits someone), the state police will give it to local butchers to sell. We can't get it anymore because that butcher closed up shop. I don't know about deer. I have seen deer rotting on the side of road many times-but I also know that people do take the deer if they hit it with their vehicles.

I was just hacking on ya, I'm sure the buzzards will find a dead skunk in the middle of the road or something else to feast on as there is probably no shortage of roadkill. On my daily drive to work, I go by a resevoir and there is always RK to be seen on the road, numerous bucks and does and coons, possum, skunk, cats and on rare occasion a coyote so those vultures have a plethora of meat.

it's sad to think some poor deer never got his/her 15min on the deer cam  :(

Didn't check your profile to see where you are located, but I'm sure if you live in a city area then you can find a restaurant that serves venison if you wanted to try it.  The farm raised stuff isn't as good as wild vennie, but it's still good regardless and is better tasting than most cuts of beef.

OK....one other thing I wanted to mention is if you do try vennie, try and have a simple dish, something with steak cuts instead of something like osso bucco.  All that is , is the foreleg of the animal(not a good cut of meat to begin with), heavily seasoned and not a good first choice.

Ugly!!

Like a large rat, white or off white hair, a long pink tail.  They're about as intelligent as a rock, but they have a mean set of teeth.

One time we put some cat food (that my cat wouldn't eat) on the back porch for the neighbor cats (we didn't want it to go to waste). I heard someone eating it, turned on the back porch light and there was this opossum-yeah, it did look like an ugly big rat.
