Subject: Texas Supreme Court upholds "pole tax"

Written By: MaxwellSmart on 09/01/11 at 6:26 pm

Two Amarillo strip clubs challenged a $5.00 per head surcharge on First Amendment grounds.  The Texas Supreme Court overruled lower court's findings, stating the pole tax, signed into law in 2007 by Gov. Rick Perry, did not inhibit free expression in the form of nude dancing, but addressed issues resulting from nude dancing combined with alcohol consumption.  Sexual assault victims and low-income Texans are the intended beneficiaries of the "pole tax" revenues.

One would assume exotic dancing and alcohol increases rates of sexual assault, but I'm not convinced it does.  Strip clubs are certainly regarded with contempt by moralists and feminists.  I can understand a position that says strip clubs contribute to low standards of decency, or one that says nude dancing objectifies women (or men, as the case may be), but a definite correlation between adult entertainment and sexual assault is hard to establish.  I don't see where the state of Texas has done so.

Furthermore, I am surprised Mr. Ant-Government Rick Perry favors a sin tax to aid the poor in his state.  In fact, I'm stunned Perry favors anything that purports to help low-income people at all.

Wow it was expensive enough already to get into Rick's Cabaret.  Now ya gotta pony up another $5.  Yikes.  :o

Fixed that for you.

Been there, done that, (almost for-)got the t-shirt.  Judging from a simple google image search, if Rick Perry were really behind "I Support Single Moms", he'd be subsidizing strip clubs.  But I didn't come here to talk about strip clubs.  Came here to talk about Rick Perry.

Rick Perry cannot subsidize the boobies, because, well, he's just not that kinky.  He's not just "not-kinky", he's "the evil opposite of kinky".  Five years ago, you were all told that Rick Perry has no Kinky in him.

Mojo told you not to vote for Perry as governor of Texas.  You - if you lived in Texas - could have voted for Kinky Friedman, on the basis of a simple platform: "WHY THE HELL NOT?"  But you didn't listen.  You didn't LISTEN!  Now look what you've done!

I remember a study back in the '60s the suggested a reverse correlation between adult entertainment/pornography and sexual assault/sexual violence.

The anti-government crowd has never had a problem trying to legislate morality, its regulation of business they oppose.  Gov't just big enough to fit into your bedroom and your uterus
