On May 25, 2011, Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI) signed into law a bill requiring voters to show ID at the polls. The deal was those who do not have proper ID, such as a driver's license, a military ID, or a passport, could pick up a free state-issued photo ID at a Department of Motor Vehicles branch.
Now, wouldn't you know it, Walker and his cronies plan to close ten DMV branches in -- surprise, surprise -- Democratic-leaning districts while expanding hours at RMV branches in Republican districts.
These tactics are popular with Republicans, but no politician in the past quarter century has been more pushy about it than Scott Walker.
Citizens least likely to possess valid ID: Racial minorities, low-income people, college students, disabled people, and senior citizens on fixed incomes. All of these groups tend to vote Democratic.
Republicans argue it is the responsibility of the citizen to obtain such documentation and it's not hard to do. If you learn to drive, if you join the army, if you travel abroad, or if you just go down to the Registry and ask for a state photo ID, you can get one. Why should you be able to vote if you're a lazy slob?
By the law of the 14th Amendment, these criteria do not pass muster for disenfranchisement. They are just judgments against people who don't conform to a set of social norms. I don't care what you think of an elderly shut-in who has no car and no money to go to France this summer, he still has the right to vote.
The Republicans also insist we MUST prevent voter fraud. However a recent study by the Brennan Center for Justice, a non-partisan public policy and law institute at the NYU School of Law, found that only 44 one-millionths of one percent of votes are cast by people who commit voter fraud. Thus, voter fraud is clearly a red herring.
The decision to close the DMV branches in Wisconsin is not final as of July 26, 2011, but it is evidence of the malevolent intent of Scott Walker and other bigoted politicians who serve exclusively the interests of the very wealth and powerful in our society.

Scott Walker knows his time in office is limited. As of Jan. 3rd 2012, he is going to be recalled so fast-and he knows it. That is why he is trying to suppress voters so they can't recall him next year.
