Just read that apparently Rudolph Hess, one of Hitler's henchmen, was buried in a plot that had a short-term lease.  The lease was about to expire, so his family collected the bones, had it all cremated, and then thrown into the sea.

Yep.  we'll never know the real story about him.  Apparently he had some very damaging inormation about one of the Allied countries and thats why he was never let out of the slammer and was ultimately murdered.

True, true. But there are plenty of bad actors in history whose graves have not been trashed like Hess's was.

All sorts of Confederate figures who fought to enslave millions of blacks... Pretty bad ass... And they have not had their graves raided like this. Ditto for Stalin, who made Hess look like a school boy.

Sounds like paranoia over there...

Neo-Nazis marched on the anniversary of his death (8/17) in the town of Wunsiede, where Hess was buried.  Local officials hoped to discourage these activities by exhuming and cremating Hess' remains.  They were sick of the little buggars coming around and making a scene every year.  Time was Neo-Nazi activities were illegal in Germany and if the creeps so much as waved an iron cross, the cops would beat the living scheiss out of them and throw 'em in the hoosegow.  The German government liberalized its policies on Neo-Nazis twenty years ago and has vacillated a few times since then, sometimes stricter, sometimes more lenient.

That's what I wonder.  Why wait until 1987 to ice the sonofabitch?  Hess got to write one letter a week and see his family once a month.  His jailers, I assume, censored everything he got or sent.  If he had the goods on the Allies he didn't have much of a chance to  squeal about it.
