Subject: Weiner - A Perspective

Written By: LyricBoy on 06/06/11 at 6:59 pm

Up until now, the whole Weinergate thing was a source of humor.

But now we see that all along he was less than forthright in his presentation of what happened.  Once more we learn what too many politicians refuse to understand - that the coverup is almost always worse than the original offense.

So for the moment let's set aside that his wife likely was not in on his clandestine sexting and sending pics of his johnson to other women.  After all many might argue that whatever transgressions he commits vis a vis his wife are of no concern to us.  (I don't really believe that, because it is a clear sign of untrustworthiness but for now I will not quibble.)

But in his handling of the situation, he obfuscated and essentially lied to his constituents about the whole thing until (I surmise) somebody came up with a "smoking weiner" that was gonna point the, uh, finger straight at him in this mess. I would not relish to be in his position. His explanation of his stonewalling doesn't cut the mustard, at least with me.

So what becomes of his once-promising political career?  He hasn't done anything illegal, but he's outed himself as less than trustworthy in how he handled the situation. He's really put his reputation in a pickle.

Dem leadership is rattling sabres about an ethics investigation but I think that too is inappropriate.  I do not think he has violated any congressional "ethics rules" per se.  But he's violated the basic trust by lying about the situation in the ways that he did.

So now we have an outspoken dem cough in a minor peccadillo.  Minor because there was no direct sexual advances, and because there was no attempt at a payoff, no laws of any kind violated, just a guy who got carried away by the seduction of the anonymous internet.  So yeah, his wife is probably a bit pissed, but this a is big difference  between Larry Craig and his toe tapping, Dave Vitter, sexting with aides, and John Ensign's multi=thousand $$$ payoffs.  In comparison this is a big whoop, NOT

Well it depends how explicit the unreleased photos are. Until we see how explicit the photos are lets see what happens.

Well if the Dem leadership calls for an ethics investigation (which I think is overkill) then it is no longer a minor deal...

Pity you forgot the buns!
;)

I agree with your summation for the most part.  I see Mr. Weiner as a pitiable figure.  He is an intelligent and shrewd politician with a compulsive disorder.  I just wish that compulsive disorder was collecting stamps or saving string, but oh no, it's dirty talk.  He had to recognize he could not, ahem, keep it up without getting busted.  He's a forty-something political luminary and until last week the world was his oyster.

There are jealous and angry people on the right salivating to destroy a powerful Democrat's career.  Andrew Breitbart is among the worst of them.  He's a professional smear-monger.  Allegations of lame set-ups and racism were on the verge of destroying Breitbart's credibility.*
I thought if his opponents could show up the Weiner photo as a phony, Breitbart might have to shut his yap for good.  But now he's vindicated.  Breitbart is playing the victim.  He says his family vacation in Palm Springs was torture because the press bombarded him with questions about the Weiner story.  Now Breitbart demands an apology from Weiner for making him defend himself in front of kin and country.  Breitbart must be laughing devilishly all the while.  He knew all along he had the evidence to redeem himself.  The ruined vacation angle is just another way to ham it up.  He could have released the photo to the press upon his return from Palm Springs, now couldn't he?

BTW, most families in America are struggling just to put food on the table and pay the bills.  "You spoiled my luxury holiday" is another example of how out of touch right wing meat-heads such as Breitbart are.

I have sympathy for Mr. Weiner because I believe he was unable to behave in his own interest, let alone that of his constituents and supporters.  I like the guy and I don't see evidence that his sleazy snaps and texting were interfering with his job performance.  However, we Americans love our self-righteous indignation when it comes to politicians and kink.  We love it second only to the mountains of pornography we consume and the serial extramarital affairs we attend.  If we were more mature as a people, we would be more willing to forgive Mr. Weiner in light of our own sins.  Uh-uh.  Not gonna happen.  We're going throw the first stone and act all pure and pious.  Then we'll chill out with some Max Hardcore and a cruise around Adult Friend Finder to see if some new strange is headed our way!

Sorry, Mr. Weiner.  Sorry it had to go down like this, but you know what kind of a country we live in.  I'm glad to hear you say you take responsibility for your actions, and maybe your constituents will go easy on you, but as for being mayor of the Big Apple, you can kiss that dream goodbye.

As for you, Mr. Breitbart, go **** yourself.

Well Pelosi does not have the friendship with Weiner that she had/has with Charlie Rangel so she really doesn't care what happens to Weiner. Thats why it took so long to put Rangel in front of the ethics commitee because of her allegiance with Rangel in my own opinion.

I don't think there is really any connection.  A.W. was a rising star because he has been outspoken on the issues, so naturally, after all their scandals, the right is just aching for a Dem to slip up, and Dullbright is just the scum bag to latch on to one

He's also kicking a man when he's down.  He's got all the grace of a pro-wrestler's manager.

Once Weiner admitted he lied, all Bratbeard had to do was smile and bow out.  He could have made a brief statement to the effect of "I regret any pain this has caused Representative Weiner and his loved ones, but the American people deserve to know the truth," etc. etc.  Other than that, I would have counseled him to just let Mr. Weiner go flaccid.  Instead, Bratbeard keep howling like Tarzan with a hernia about how Weiner wrecked his vacation.

Yeah I liked how outspoken Weiner was on things even though I don't agree with his views on the issues.

On Brietbart he was slime for the whole Shirley Sherrod thing.

It is such a shame because I think he was doing good things in the house. In fact, I often said that we need more people like Rep. Weiner. But, he had to do something so STUPID!!!! And the fact that he is a dem, yeah, of course his career is toast. But, if he was a repub, he would be ok-like David Vitter.

So, Vitter went to a whorehouse.  We all done that.  My daddy took me to one for my eighteenth birthday!

As despicable and male chauvinist as those remarks sound, they reflect the sentiments of a huge portion of the male population.  Even though Weiner has broken know laws (that we know of so far) his behavior is considered MORE aberrant than Vitter's.  It's not the way things ought to be, but it's the way things are.

I just hope nobody under 18 received one of those Weiner photos.  Cross your fingers.

But, I believe that prostitution IS illegal in most states (I know it is not in Nevada and I'm not too sure about any other state.)

I am not condoning A.W.'s behavior. It is something that I would expect from a teenager in high school and NOT from a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. It truly disappointments me that he behaved in such a way. What bothers me the most about all of this is that once again the Republicans have ammo for a distraction and they are milking it for all its worth. This story has been going on for how many weeks now? I'm sure they will try for another few weeks. So, we can all be concentrating on Anthony Weiner's...er...weiner (sorry, had to say it) instead of things that REALLY matter like how the Repubs are trying to hold the debt ceiling hostage and other critical matters.

Well your saying the Republicans are milking this Weiner issue yeah but he didn't even tell the truth for a whole week and then that explicit photo came out yesterday.

On the debt ceiling it has to be raised by August 2nd so we have a couple months to wait for that issue to get resolved.

You totally missed my point. My point is that there are much more important issues that should be discussed rather than what A.W. Twittered. And WHY were people asking him for a WEEK? The point is WHO DOES THIS EFFECT? It effects, him, his wife, & the woman he Twittered with. It doesn't effect you or me in any way shape and form. What does effect us are the fact that the Repubs are blocking appointments, millions of people are STILL out of work, people are still losing their homes to foreclosures, and the Congress is too busy dealing with abortion issues & what A.W. Twittered.

There are so many other MORE IMPORTANT issues that should be discussed.

Yeah, the American public just loves sensationalism, and truth to tell, both parties pander, but if we look at the various "indiscretions" in perspective, Craig directly solicited. Vittor got... you know, so did Ensign.  What did Wiener get?  Basically nothing.  Not pretty, but hardly on he same level.  On the other hand, knowing how stupid he can be, I guess he should resign.  Another case of self immolation.  But Cat is right, there are lots more important things to be concerned with

What I kinda wonder is why Breitbart did not try to entrap Weiner's nastiness by spoofing him online and making him think that he was some hot chick, maybe set up a rendezvous.  Sort of like how Chris Hansen ddid it on 'to catch a predator'.  He possibly coulda gotten more sensational stuff.  :P

As far as I'm concerned, the "sexting" is between Mr. and Mrs. Weiner (Huma Weiner).  However, as Cat says, if he stays in office the media outrage machine will use his cyber-dalliances to distract for the real issues.  Weiner must resign.  Rachel Maddow can enumerate the dirty deeds of Republicans until the cow comes, but she's only contributing to the big distraction.

Andrew Lightfart is the worst sort of person.  He combines two most despicable traits: Sanctimony and thuggery.

He says he did it to "save" Weiner's family but then he goes on the "Opie and Anthony Show," which is mean-spirited frat boy radio and pulls up the really dirty photo of Weiner on his cell phone.  Then they all claimed it was a webcam viewer who leaked the photo.

For now I'll give Weiner the benefit of the doubt on the 17 year old.  It could easily have been a simple email/PM exchange about politics.

Bottom line if he had any nastiness going on there will be an electronic trail, so let's just let that part of the investigation run its course.

Of course the problem for Weiner is that although he has denied any improper communication with the teen, his previous denials have shredded his credibility and so he is wide open for a media-and-enemies attack.

If Weiner had kept covered up, there would have been nothing to cover up and people would not now suspect him of covering up.  That pretty much covers it.

Just saw that Weiner is gonna take a leave of absence so that he can 'go to treatment'.  Pretty much de rigeur these days for famous men who get caught with their, uh, hand in the cookie jar.

Maybe as a result of this treatment Weiner will get straightened out.

He'll resign after the heat goes down.  His political career is dead.  If he takes a "leave of absence" now and tenders his resignation quietly on Labor Day it'll be easier than swallowing the whole thing at once.  He might be in too much denial to act on his best interest now, but he should try and line up a job behind the scenes or in the private sector now.  Maybe he can do campaign management or lobbying.  Maybe Jon Stewart will give him a job as a correspondent.  Maybe he can do ads for iPhones!

Or maybe, because there has been no actual physical contact, he can come out of anti-stupidity training, claim to be re-habilitated (after sitting on the group W bench and visiting the base psycho-ologist (I wanna kill, kill...) and attempt to regain some semblance of credibility -  I am Anthony Weiner, but Anthony's wiener is private.  The stupidity continues to astound

His only way back may be to become a contestant on "Celebrity Rehab 6 with Dr. Drew", where he can blame his current predicament on some weird guy he net in a public park when he was 9 years old. If anybody can break him of his 'net addiction it is Dr. Drew and the folks at the Pasadena Recovery Center.

Oh snap!  TMZ has reported that some of the pics that Weiner posted were taken at the Congressional Gym. Some House members have verified that the background of those pics is at said gym.

Guy's in deep doody now. That's all the House needs to expel him for conduct unbecoming.

I'm no shrink, but I think he's got some kind of narcissistic personality disorder.

Yeah, he acts like he's the first guy to discover he's got one of those!
