Subject: John McCain to Bush apologists: Stop lying about Bin Laden and torture
Written By: ChuckyG on 05/12/11 at 6:12 pm
John McCain is sick of the Bush apologists trying to make it look like the torture was justified and wrote an op ed to counteract that of a former Bush Attorney General.
The trail to bin Laden did not begin with a disclosure from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who was waterboarded 183 times. We did not first learn from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed the real name of bin Laden’s courier, or his alias, Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti — the man who ultimately enabled us to find bin Laden. The first mention of the name Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti, as well as a description of him as an important member of Al-Qaeda, came from a detainee held in another country. The United States did not conduct this detainee’s interrogation, nor did we render him to that country for the purpose of interrogation. We did not learn Abu Ahmed’s real name or alias as a result of waterboarding or any ‘enhanced interrogation technique’ used on a detainee in U.S. custody. None of the three detainees who were waterboarded provided Abu Ahmed’s real name, his whereabouts, or an accurate description of his role in Al-Qaeda.

The irony is that if he'd stood up against torture during the Bush II Administration, he'd have been a much more credible candidate in 2008. Would have voted for him in the 2000 primaries, and (in the alternate universe in which McCain became president in 2000), the 2004 McCain vs Kerry campaign would have dealt with the "What did your Dad do during the Vietman War" question in a much more adult fashion.

Every once in a while McCain emerges from his afternoon nap and gets it right, as with the woman who called Obama an Arab

Yup-gotta give him kudos on this one. But, like Foo said, he should have made his comments during the last Administration.

Karma for remembering that moment from the 2008 campaign. He was a hell of a lot more polite about it than I would have been.
I think that was the time he not only realized his campaign was effectively over, but that it was probably better that way.

he did before he didn't... then he did again. he's stated time and again he was against torture, but rarely did he vote against the Bush regime when they wanted approval for their torture policies.

"I'm against torture, and whatever we're doing isn't torture" doesn't count (that was Gonzalez/Yoo's excuse on Cheney's behalf).
Neither does "...and we're not doing the torture" (because we outsourced it).
Nor even "...and we're neither doing nor outsourcing the torture" (because he didn't have a need to know what we may or may not have been outsourcing. Neither do we, of course, but we random Chucks had nothing to lose by making educated guesses based on the testimony of the Attorney General.)

Put somebody's head inside of a bell and ring it, and eventually, they'll go insane...

I was thinking more along these lines:
"It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!"
- Upton Sinclair, but you're the guy who should be quoting him, not me :)

Sort of -- in that I thought you'd beat me to the Sinclair reference. It'd be like you finding a place to quote Rand or Friedman before I did :)

Agent Smith: "We played the entire Sigue Sigue Sputnik discography, and all he did was dance for six hours."
Agent Jones: "Fine. Cue up the Rebecca Black."
Foo: "I'LL TALK! I'LL TALK!"
