Subject: If you want to understand the noble rebels of North Africa...

...listen to Lara Logan's account of her gang rape by the mob of rebel celebrants in Egypt on CBS 60 Minutes.
These are the type of people that our government are supporting in North Africa, largely through complete ignorance of what really is going on over there. >:(

I think that's a slur on the people over there - if there were comparative rape statistics for Libya / the "free" world which showed that they're all a bunch of rapists, you might just have a point.
Saying "these are the types of people" lays you wide open to accusations of bigotry/racism.

Hey if we are going to pile adulation on the rebels an scorn on the government then we have to call out the shortcomings too.
The celebrants went on a 300-person rape frenzy on Logan and she was saved by soldiers. Her main offense was being a Western woman.
Let's come back to this thread in about 5 years and you will see what I mean. Egypt is headed down the road to Islamic terror and repression against all women as well as "non believers".
Then of course we have the Ivory Coast, where gang rape was practiced by both sides. Congo-gang rape by all sides. Darfur- rape by all sides. South Africa-gang, infant, and child rape capital of the world. On the African continent rape is not so much a crime as it is a tactic.
Do we have gang rapes in North America? Certain but not at 1/100th that of what we see throughout the African continent.

Yes, Egyptian soldiers who - when push came to shove - ended up siding with the rebels.
Meanwhile, Dorothy Parvaz is still missing. And if an Al-Jazeera journalist (even if she's got both US and Canadian citizenship) is too left-wing and deserve whatever rape comes with the territory for covering the revolt in Syria, how about this account from the Daily Mail about the treatment that NYTimes journalist Lynsey Addario got from Qadaffi's folks?
(You might also get a kick out of that Youtube video of what it was like to be a female lawyer in Libya last month. Daffy's goon squad busts into a restaurant in full view of the press, throws a cover over her head, and drags her away screaming, and it's all on video! Fun stuff!)
Hey, like you said, if you're gonna pile adulation on the guys working for your side, someone's gotta call out their shortcomings too.

Yes, let's. I'm willing to eat crow if history proves me wrong. Are you?

Know American soldier who served in Viet Nam? If he does care to talk about it ask him about what our own troops got up to over there. If he says nothing he is lying. The fact is that in the sexual abuse of women and children is a given, just like "collateral damage". It is overlooked, denied, and sadly, many times fostered. It doesn't know borders, boundaries, or citizenship.

...as if gang rape is unknown in the US
or the US Military. Most American women soldiers will tell you they fear their fellow male soldiers than they do the local population.
