The bill passed by an overwhelming majority (66-32 in the House, 36-13 in the Senate) in the Indiana legislature, and Governor Daniels has indicated that he will sign it into law...

The fun part is that everyone is focusing on the abortion aspect of this. Never mind the other services Planned Parenthood offers....you know, little things like cancer screening, family planning, general healthcare, and unimportant stuff like that. So way to go, Indiana, you just effectively f*cked over people who can't afford these things because they are poor and were thus relying on PP to help them stay healthy. Good job.
A s s holes.

You must misunderstand the legislation. It did not band funding for these other services.
All it said was "hey if you give abortions, we will not fund your other activities". Any organization that chooses to serve the people without killing fetuses is unencumbered by this legislation.

So because Planned Parenthood gives abortions, they will not get money. Which means that they will not have money to perform their other services. Which means that people who do rely on them will be SOL. So I think it all ties together, which is what I was getting at. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.
It does make one wonder though if the people who take it upon themselves to interfere with a woman's cooch will now be willing to take the kids born because their mother couldn't get an abortion. I'm sure they'll be lining up to help, right? I mean, since they're making a big deal out of it and all that jazz.

I am still wondering why as a taxpayer I should be subsidizing ANYBODY's cooch... ???

I'd say you were subsidizing mine, but we don't live in the same state. So I guess my husband subsidizes it.
Wait, that sounded wrong.

Karma +1. Planned Parenthood provides a vast array of services important to public health. Abortion is just a small percentage of such services. According to Fox and Friends, you can get your pap smears at Walgreens!

Karma to you, too.
I went to PP once a long time ago-and NOT for an abortion. I went for birth control.

I think YOU are the one who misunderstands the legislation. They are willing to deny mostly women (even though they serve men, too) health care just because the legislators do not like 3% of their services. And the last time I checked, abortion is still legal in this country. I just think it is appalling that there is such an assault on women's health care.
I also bet that these same @$$holes who voted to eliminate this funding, would not help a women if she got cancer which a pap smear can detect in early stages when it is curable. (I should know, I have had an abnormal pap that was pre-cancerous and it was caught in the early stages and they treated it BEFORE it became cancer.)
As for why you should have to subsidize to help people out-EVERYONE should. It is that attitude of "I got mine so f**k everyone else" that really makes me sick! No man is an island, LyricBoy and we are all in this together. By helping people who are less fortunate than you are-and usually by no fault of their own, you are actually helping the country as a whole.

It is very telling that Viagra was covered by health insurance before birth controls pills.

Very true. However, abortions were covered by health insurance before birth control pills. Go figure on that one.

That's odd. Back when I lived in Indiana for over 20 years there were all sorts of family health clinics where one could go for care, and they were not abortion mills. I was unaware that in the 6 years since I left Indiana, they shut down all the charitable health clinics except for Planned Parenthood. Apparently the new Saint Joseph Medical Center in Mishawaka is a mirage, and that Saint Catherine's in East Chicago IN has been shut down. Both of these institutions have decades-old medical service outreach programs to the poor.
Sure abortion is still legal. So is bungee jumping. But I don't see the government providing free bungee jumps either.
The problem with modern "liberals" is that their definition of "charity" is to forcibly confiscate tax dollars from one group, and hand it over to another. That's not charity, it is confiscation.

Apparently Indiana citizens (the majority) see it otherwise. That's the beauty of the Federal system. Each state can regulate that which is not expressly granted to the Fed in the US Constitution. 8)

It's beautiful provided you have the means to move to a state that better suits your ideals. However, a necessitous man is not a free man. If you're a 14-year-old girl from a broken home in the middle of Indianapolis and you need emergency OB/GYN services, well, Planned Parenthood's absence further curbs your already limited options.

I am pro-choice Carlos even though I favor the Republican platform on most economic issues over the Democratic platform on economic issues. I just don't like the Republicans telling women they have to have the baby. I mean I think thats an issue between her doctor, husband/boyfriend , and her.

Glad we agree on women's right. Seems the Repubs want government just small enough to fit in our bedrooms and in a woman's uterus. Actually, though, they seems to be interested in big, intrusive gov't on everything but economic issues. They are even trying to get rid of the Frank - Dodd financial reform bill.

Planned Parenthood and two of it's clients are suing over this, as expected, and the Fed has signaled that it will not tolerate this law, which is contrary to the fed regulations

The only thing the federal Government can do it withhold money on this one. Indiana and Gov Daniels have already said if it costs them the money, so be it.
