Subject: 337,000 new jobs created in October.

Why couldn't this come out before the election?  Anyway look at the stock market.

Economy Added 337,000 Jobs in October
Friday, November 05, 2004

WASHINGTON — The number of new jobs soared at the sharpest rate in seven months in October, the government reported on Friday, helped by a surge in construction activity as hurricane-racked areas in the Southeast were rebuilt.

A surprisingly strong 337,000 jobs were added to payrolls last month — twice the 169,000-job growth that Wall Street economists had forecast. However, the unemployment rate edged up to 5.5 percent from 5.4 percent in September as more people joined the search for employment, the Labor Department (search) said.

New hiring in October was more than twice as strong as the upwardly revised 139,000 jobs that were created in September. The data pointing to revival in the labor market comes days before Federal Reserve (search) policy-makers, meeting Wednesday, are expected to nudge official short-term interest rates up for a fourth time this year, by a quarter percentage point, to lift the federal funds rate to 2 percent.

Kathleen Utgoff, commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (search), noted that a 71,000-addition in construction jobs — the biggest since March 2000 — "reflected rebuilding and cleanup activity in the Southeast following the four hurricanes that struck the U.S. in August and September."

--''When the economy tanks, the republicans can't blame Clinton this Bush term.''  That is along the lines of what was said on this messageboard.  If Bush had a great first term economy the democrats would have said it was all Clinton's work.  Either way, the opposite of what I just quoted is true; if Bush has a great second term with a good economy, more people with healthcare and all that jazz the democrats won't be able to say it was Clinton's doing.

ok, here's a better headline:

Unemployment Rate Up.

Or did you overlook that part?  So while there were some new jobs added, it clearly didn't slow down the rate of jobs being lost. He's still at a huge netloss from when he took office.

So you're right.  He should take credit for it still.  He needs unemployment to shrink and add jobs at this rate for like six months before you can claim anything positive.

No, Mother Nature should take credit...helped by a surge in construction activity as hurricane-racked areas in the Southeast were rebuilt.   Not to mention there's no mention of what the pay rate is for the other jobs created ::)

Exactly the point I was going to make, so I'll just add that these "clean-up and rebuild" jobs are temporatry.

You want fries with that sir?

Short term work in Florida. If you really want a vision of things to come how about United Airlines,
who recieved millions in taxpayer largesse(corporate welfare) is going to try to cut the pensions
and salaries of its workers, Northwest Pilots just took a 15% whack.  That is what is coming down
the road.  Our tax dollars subsidize the airlines, the CEO's pocket the millions and the workers
pay the price.

That, my dear Danoot, is because the CEO's and Repubs understand the Labor Theory of Value and most others don't.  "We have fed them all for a thousand years" (actually longer) but still don't get it.

I must add that people whose benefits run out are not counted as unemployed.  I wonder how
many could be added.  Remember Reagans little ploy?  He took the never before counted
armed services(they were out in uncounted limbo) counted them as part of the employed, and
used the figure to say that employment had risen.  They are still falling for it.
