Subject: RNC-ok let's get on with it

Written By: danootaandme on 09/01/04 at 6:34 am

Of the speeches I saw last night I would say Michael Steele, Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, was
the best, but will Liddy Dole please sit down.  With the heart felt looks and reaching out of hands
and husband watching with his mind on the Viagra at home.  All the moralizing, was Bobs ex-wife,
the one he was married to when he was dating Liddy, watching?  The bush twins, no child left behind.
The sight of them, who could not, or would not, write their own speeches up there reading obviously scripted, very cute one liners was an embarrassment.  Cute is one thing in a five year old, but a very
different thing in college educated women at a political convention. I would appreciate it if the Clinton
hating Arnold fans would explain to me how you can vilify Clintons morals and love Arnold when
Arnolds' reputation with women is worse, and he even has a child born outside of the marriage, who
he supports, but refuses to acknowledge in public.  Nice thing for a ten year old, think he was watching
and applauding his dad?

...And what a touching story Arnold told of being terrified of the communists -- that at any minute they could come snatch his uncle and daddy away and he'd never see them, again.  Awwww....  I'm glad no children had ever been afraid that Arnold's daddy would come snatch their families away, and they'd never see one another again.  ::)

I do have to make a comment about the Bush twins' "hamster story". I find it interesting that they had to ride on the coattails of the Kerry's daughter. While their story may have got a laugh, it did kind of show that Dubya would not go out of his way for a small creature. I think they should have been wearing shoulder pads so they don't hurt their heads as it swung back and forth as they said, "I don't know."

That's because the hamster was one of his chief advisors.  The hamster got him through business school, and is the real brains behind Karl Rove!
;D

Ahhnold had ever reason to be scared of the Commies, just as the Viennese Jews had every reason to be scared of Papa Schwarzeneggar and the rest of the Nazis.
It makes me particularly ill to see actor Ron Silver kissing up in a cosmic way to the GOP.  Then again, it's all about Israel!

I agree, Danoot, that Steele's speach was the best of the night, but I did object to his distortions of history.

The twins reminded me of Barbie and Barbie.  What did they expect to gain from two blond bimbos with only a hgalf a brain between them?  What blather.  And why didn't Lil' Georgie save the hamster?

I also noticed a lack of enthusiasm from the crown.  I guess Republicans just aren't party animals.

And who was that blond who couldn't sing?

The Harlem Boys Choir was great though.  Nice touch.  My guess is thats lots of those former Dixicrates were thinking "man, they sure got rythem".

To be a bit more serious, it seems to me that this convention is the biggest lie yet.  I will refrain from characterizing it, but you can guess my thoughts.

Danoot, just tell your kid that republicans aren't all bad, just diluded.  Dems aren't much better, but when your choice is between s*** and shinola, always take the shineola.

God I'm coming to hate politics in this country.

The convention started out as infuriating, but it's turned out just pathetic.  I've never heard folks boast so much about accomplishing so little.  When the foam settles, there ain't no beer in that glass at all!

I couldn't watch very much last night.  It's the people applauding at the outright lies.  Arnold did say that
little georgie pulled us out of a deficit left by the past administration, and people applauded,

To be "fair and balanced" I think he said "recession", not deficit, left by the last admin., but even that's a lie.

We didn't bother watching last night. If we want fiction, we will read a book or watch a movie. We don't have to listen to "Uncle D!ckie's" lies for our fiction. It just truly amazes me that people actually believe the garbage they are throwing out. I guess, like their "fearless leader", they don't read newspapers.

Man you shoulda seen Zell Miller's speech.  It would have done old Nathan Bedford Forrest right proud.  I'm sure glad that mean old cracker is speaking on THEIR behalf!  I hope they throw Zell out front a lot more in the next few weeks!
Later, when confronted by Chris Matthews of "Hardball" (spitball), he started hollaring at him to "get out of my face."  He suggested if he was there in person he would beat up Matthews, and said, "I wish we lived in a time where you could challenge somebody to a duel."
The Republicans were looking for a Democrat they could bash the Democrats with, well, be careful what you wish for....

I saw a bunch of young republicans on tv yesterday. I was disheartened to see a young black male there wearing cornrows. Doesn't he know his entire look puts fear in the very party he supports?

I don't think his "look" scares anybody in the mainstream Republican party of 2004.  In fact, I think the Republicans want many more young people of color in various, erm, ethnic fashions.
The heart of the Republican party is not racial identity, religious identity, or cultural identity, rather it is FINANCIAL identity.  The Republican operatives know if they can put a multicultural, tolerant spin on the GOP, it'll much easier to pull the wool over American's eyes while they, uh, fleece the nation on behalf of billionaires!

Zell Miller may be in the initial stages of "old timers" disease, as a friend of mine calls it, but more importantly, he is an old time racist and political opportunist.  He was a protogee of Lester Maddox (of axe handle fame), a hard line segregationist, and only "changed his spots" when it became politically convienient to do so, and never really embraced civil rights or equality.  The man is an opportunist, a bigot, and a fraud.  That's my opinion, and anything he says is suspect.

I like how Newt keeps calling Miller a "Mountain" Democrat.  Yeah, he'd like to challenge somebody to a duel on alright, Dueling Banjos
"Can you squeal like a pig, boy, squeeeeaaal!"
Lucky for Chris Matthews he doesn't look anything like Ned Beatty!

I'd put Pet Seeger in his prime and his banjo up against any red neck in the country when it comes to dueling banjos.  Pete would bury Zell with his riffs.

Well they won't have to worry about that in Chicago,  I heard a sidebar on the news about Chicago
banning braids on males in the schools. The gave a convoluted reason about preparing them for
corporate america(yeah! right!) and men in corporate america do not where braids.  I don't believe
this was going to extend to mohawks, buzz cuts, long hair, etc.

Hair?  Why should it matter?  I use to wear mine +/- short.  Cat likes it long, so now it is (in the back, not on top) shoulder length.  Does that make me less intelligent, less  effective as a teacher?  Why can't we get past this garbage and focus on ability etc?

It's just more same old.  Just when you think we have progressed.  When I was in high school African
American females were required to straighten their hair. Wearing hair in a natural no matter how
short(say Odetta as opposed to Angela Davis)was grounds for expulsion.  That was in the sixties,
here we go again.

Uhh, if you want to prepare kids for success, the place to start is with prenatal care, adequate childhood nutrition, headstart programs, and so on and so forth.  It is the bullying influence of corporate American and the conservative movement that derailed the movement toward concern for the well-being of the community, and made the greed of the individual paramount.  It takes NO investment and NO responsibility on the part of those who control the U.S. economy to tell young men they can't wear braids.
It's just like the Bill O'Reilly and Bill Cosby rhetoric that says if you look and act like a gangster, you won't make it.  True.  But that rhetoric is meaningless if there are no jobs for these kids to get when they graduate from school.
Braids can disappear in 20 minutes.  It's the etrocious economic conditions for poor people in Chicago that have to change.

Yes, most people are surprised, but it is the truth, and I, holder of grudges longer than any

Angela Davis behind and am more Odetta now.

There were only 1 or 2 black kids in my public schools in (then) rural New Jersey, and there was no such rule, thank goodness.  I don't blame you for being bitter.  I do remember bring called a "spik" in my grade school - once - I had a good left hook, and word traveled fast. ;)

for wearing braids because they "may be used as a method of indicating membership in a gang"
The parents are looking for a private school placement. >:(

I just hope they have the $$ for a private school. When I went back to college (in my late 20s/early 30s), that was when I first heard about homeschooling. I wasnt too sure about it when I first heard of it. Then I met Carlos and he told me that all his kids were homeschooled. I still wasn't too sure until I met his kids. Now, I am starting to think that that is the way to go.

Unfortunately, this is all true.  However, you cannot make an exception for one or two students simply because they get better grades or whatever.  In Chicago, there is a real problem with gangs and the latest thing is to all wear their hair in the same style.  It's a more subtle way of showing your association than wearing certain colors (which they still do and which have been banned due to uniforms, etc.).  I remember in High School, going to my boyfriend's Homecoming (at a different school, in one of the 'burbs), we were not allowed to enter until we changed clothes because we had on red & blue and they were afraid that it might start a "gang war".  Now, my boyfriend was ROTC, but they still wouldn't let us in due to that.  Luckily, he lived nearby and I was the same size as his sister so we were able to change fairly easily, but these things happened as far back as the 80's.

British bars ban Burberry clothes
From correspondents in London
August 27, 2004

TWO pubs in the English city of Leicester have banned men wearing Burberry clothing - a label once the marque of choice for many British gentlemen.
The bars in the central England have introduced strict clothing rules, with anyone seen wearing Burberry's distinctive chequered pattern being refused entry, a spokeswoman said.
The ban has been prompted because of the increasing fondness of British hooligans for the classic brand.
The regulations also apply to items from another venerable British clothing brand, Aquascutum, as well as the Stone Island and Henri Lloyd chains.
Burberry, a 146-year-old company famous for its invention of the gabardine waterproof raincoat and its kitting out of officers in the British armed forces during World War I, has seen profits soar in recent years.

Gangs will always find a way to show their colors and banning hair styles. clothes, handshakes, do not
do anything to alter the behavior.  Better to concentrate on eradicating the causes, they will never
be able to keep up with arbitrary fads that go with them.

Oh, what I wouldn't give to live in a country with "hooligans" instead of "gangbangers."  Hooligans reminds of guys in moptop haircuts, wearing pennyloafers, and riding mopeds!
