Was able to do that until earlier this year. I had trouble trying to get my cords out of the split filter(they had gotten stuck by the plastic casing) and threw the old one in anger, thus breaking it.

Then, yesterday, I looked and saw what I thought was a phone only filter and noticed two inputs. Now I don't have to unplug the DSL line if the phone is needed.
