Subject: What stereotypes do you not fit into for your gender/social group, etc.. ?
Written By: Step-chan on 09/17/07 at 5:03 pm
Just alittle thread idea I had for awhile. Basically what stereotypes you don't exhibit that is the norm for your gender, social setting and other areas.
I don't fit into most of the male stereotypes, mainly because:
1. I have no interest in sports.
2. I am not fascinated with cars and other vehicles.
3. I tend to like cute and adorable things.
There are some others, but I can't remember them at the moment.
Edit: Remembered more, will post it.

I don't care for shopping unless I'm in a particular mood (I spend most of my money on clothes and other necessities for my daughter).
I don't watch soaps
I don't read gossip/entertainment magazines
I don't spend a lot of time getting ready in the morning
I don't wear a lot of makeup or spend a lot of $ on it
I have never had a manicure/pedicure
I don't keep up w/ fashion
I certainly don't look like a model or strive to
As an aside, when my daughter was hospitalized the first time (in Grand Rapids), a psychiatrist came in and after speaking w/ her for about 5 minutes, determined she had "gender identity issues." Why?
She loves/plays football
She loves cars
She prefers sweats to dresses
She can't stand the drama that teen girls bring to the table
(what he didn't bother to find out is that she will spend time doing her hair and putting on nails--and dressing up--when she is in the mood and she is a stereotypical teenage girl when it comes to boys)
That is all he based his "professional" opinion on. I wish you could have seen the look on her regular dr's face when he got the report. He basically threw it aside and said he obviously couldn't trust or believe any of the notes he got from that hospital.
We still laugh about it.

More from the male stereotypes I don't fit into because:
I don't like any tools or power tools(especially saws, they make me very nervous).
I will ask for directions if I can't find it myself.
I hate sports deodorant(I've worn it before out of not having any else to buy, customers where I work at complained that I smelled, I shouldn't have bought it to begin with).
I hate beer
Don't like bars and clubs either
I hate colonge
I don't fit into the Indiana/Hoosier stereotypes because:
I'm not very religious
I'm not a gay basher
I don't support The Colts(Sports related)
I'm not a bigot/racist

Although I only use my credit card for online stuff pretty much, I don't buy thousands of dollars worth or clothes or anything on it. I can't see how people do that sometimes, lol.

You know what, I was about to post a list for myself, but I can relate to alot of what TV said about himself. I'll post some more stuff later (i.e. Bay Area-related and all), but I'm also one of those sensitive guys who tends to relate to stereotypically "feminine" stuff. I also pay attention to fashion and music, whether or not I personally like it. Then again, I guess it's sort of a hobby anyway, since I like pop culture/decadeology stuff.

I hate shopping.
I do not spend hours on the phone.
I don't eat bon bons in front of the television while watching soap operas. ;D
I hate cleaning (and this place is a b**ch to clean), yet I do not like mess.
I don't spend fifty hours in an SUV/Minivan shuttling my kid around to different activities to get him out of my hair while drinking Starbucks and talking on my cellphone.
I'm anti-social and dread arranging play dates with other parents.
I love working with electronics.
I also love fixing things around the house.
I NEVER stop and ask for directions.
I drink more than the males in my family do (and believe me, that's saying a LOT).

We can blame a few things and people for negative gamer stereotype:
1. The Columbine shootings and any other incident that video games got blamed for. People said video games had a major influence on them going on a school killing spree. Nevermind the fact that those two kids already had loose screws to begin with(bullying was also to blame, although someone "claimed" to find the some stuff in which showed an apparent hatred for alot of social groups).
2. Also thes kids who shot someone(not too long ago) said they got it from playing GTA(Which is a lie to direct the blame from themselves).
3. Jack Thompson, Hillary Clinton and Joseph Lieberman(?). Although not directly to blame, they don't help the situation when they keep using it to further their political and financal careers.

I like to dress up
I love to cook
I have about 100 pairs of shoes
I love gossip magazines
I like to wear makeup and nail polish
I love to dish with my girlfriends
I like to clean
Sappy movies and commercials make me cry
Some things about me that are NOT stereotypical...especially living in such a religious community (Salt Lake City)
I never ever ever go to church
I don't have any kids
I don't drive a minivan or SUV
I drink
I'm pretty liberal in my views

For whatever reason some people think that if you are African American you must speak in "ebonics", with a southern accent and say aks instead of ask, and drop your Ls and say hep instead of help, I is or I's or I be instead of I am, . You would be surprised at how many people have asked me where I learned how to speak so well. Jeez.... >:(

Not to threadjack, but I've noticed this is a pretty common view among nongamers. In fact, alot of things end up getting unfairly typecasted, just based on the "outside image". Personally I'm not too into most games after c. 1994 (when the 3D era started taking off and NES stopped coming out with new games...although I've played some of them sporadically), but it's ridiculous to think a game is responsible for someone committing a crime. I agree it's something probably used to shift the blame. Plus, crime existed long before video games did anyway.

The hoosier accent is pretty much dead here in Indiana.... At least I think it is.(I can't tell, I don't have a standout accent) :D
My grandfather told that people here in Indy used to have an accent that made it hard to understand.

yes. i understand that video games can influence some screwed up kid to kill someone. but shouldn't we be dealing with what makes these kids crazy in the first place. a regular kid doesn't pick up a videogame and say "i'm gonna go kill someone!".
hillary clinton is only beating down on games because she knows that being a woman, she needs to deal with famiy matters so that people will be accepting. jack thompson on the other hand is not just trying to further his career. i can tell that he truely believes everything he says.

Yeah, and I understand that (about Bay Area college expenses). What I've been doing is using my Federal/State tax refund money and keeping it in my savings and then I dip into that when it comes to purchasing classes. It's probably been the easiest way for me to actually afford my own schooling. My costs at LMC are back to $11 a unit. It was hiking up to $22/unit. They got it down now, and because of that, registrations have gone through the roof this last semester! The other course I'm taking as of now, was first a $200 fee, then first day of class was a $600 fee and then about two weeks ago we paid the rest off, which was the most ($795). But, I was proud I got it all paid off on my own (even though I did suffer a bit).
But, yeah, I feel terrible charging stuff to my credit cards. I make very modest charges on it, such as gas, prescriptions or necessities.

One thing that's funny about being a guy with no interest in sports is the reaction I've gotten from others(both offline and online).
I remember some customer asked me if I was going to watch the Colts game(this was awhile back). I told her "No". She said "You gotta support them". I told her "No I don't". I'm surprised she didn't complain to management(I wasn't being rude, but some people might take a response like that in a negative way).
Another time(might have been the same day, I'm not sure), a co-worker asked me what time I got off. I told him "1 o'clock". He said "Man, right when the Colts game starts". I said "That doesn't matter, I'm not watching the game" and then told him "I'm not a sports fan." His response: Man, you are the first guy I ever heard say that! One of the cashiers who heard the conversation actually corrected him on that because she knew other guys who didn't like sports.(He's not the only co-worker I've told that too, another asked me if I was going to wear a Colts jersey on Friday and I told him the about not being into sports)
I remember when another co-worker of mine asked me if I watched the game the night before... I started laughing(albiet kinda a forced laugh) and then said no.
There was a member on here too that was surprised, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to mention it.(PM me about it)

While on stereotype discussion...
I noticed that when I had my hair longer, that some people had thought I was into the drug scene.
That's something that's annoyed me.
Alittle something I've been meaning to post for awhile

There was a member on here too that was surprised, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to mention it.(PM me about it)
Yeah, I know what you mean on this. So many times I've had to feign interest or make very casual smalltalk (just to be polite) when people are discussing sports or if they ask me something about it. Don't get me wrong, I've played most of them at one point or another, and that can be fun, but I can't get into it in-depth. Such as watching it on TV, or differentiating between certain players. It all blends together for me.
I feel similarly about video games after the 1987-1994 era (once the Super NES started declining, I pretty much fell out of it). I've played a few at people's houses, for instance, but don't have anywhere near in-depth knowledge of them the way I do for 2D stuff. Invariably when I'm hanging out with almost anyone, at some point it's bound to turn to something like Halo, which I'm totally lost on. What makes this kind of thing frustrating at times is that I can't really join in 'cause I wouldn't have anything to say, but I don't want to be a bore.
Another thing that separates me from alot of people is that I'm not surgically attached to my cellphone, lol. I don't mind them, and they certainly have their conveinences, but I get a little annoyed when I'm trying to have a conversation with someone and their phone rings. It feels very impersonal and isolationary. Sure, people probably said that in the '80s and '90s about some kids' Walkman or Game Boy, but that was far less pervasive and obnoxious on a large scale. It's like if I want to talk to someone that bad, I'll either go hang out with them personally or have a long conversation with them once I'm home.
I'm also the type where I can relate to pretty much anyone, and not just those who are within certain cliques or are just around my age. I see this stuff with alot of other people, like where they're reluctant to associate with anyone outside their core group of peers or only those who share their exact interests/personalities. For an example of what I'm talking about, I've dated older women and have always been genuinely interested in what they have to say and just generally hanging out with them. This sometimes surprises people 'cause they'd think "oh, wouldn't this young guy rather be out partying" or whatever. I've always been this way too, like I would spend just as much time at recess in school talking with the teachers (if not more) than I would interacting with my friends/peers.

I want people to think I'm touched in the head.

Here's something that happened yesterday...
I was bagging for some customer, they asked me if I seen a movie(that just came out), I told them I never heard of it. When they left they actually told me to "try and get out more"! >:(
One thing about me is that I don't have any big interest in going to watch movies, the majority of movies that come out never interest me. There is only a small amount that I like.
I want to know something, why would someone tell another person to try and get out more often just because they never heard of one movie?

^ That does sound fairly rude and stupid on their part. Maybe they think since they know about it and saw it, that logically everyone else should too? Who knows. I know what you mean about that, because there's only a handful of movies I'm interested in. Heck, I even buy alot of them (from the places I work at or other secondhand stores) and end up not watching some of them, lol. Movies generally were much better in the '80s and '90s IMO.

Nothing wrong with these, I kinda feel the same way to be honest. In many respects I'm not the typical guy either in terms of wanting to have sex and all. I'm quite feminist in alot of ways too, and I've always tend to relate to women.
Even though I can more or less be cool with just about anyone and get along with them (unless they're just totally rude or being a jerk, etc), I could care less about fitting in either. There were times when I was younger (say, in middle school) where I might've tried to be a certain way for acceptance, but I realized, why would I want to be like someone else if it doesn't appeal to me in the first place?

I have no idea what stereotype I am. I have always felt that I sort of fell in between everything. As a teen, I was the first girl to play on our school's soccer team (tomboy) yet, when the soccer season was over, I joined the cheerleading squad (girly girl). I usually wear jeans & a teeshirt (tomboy) but yet, I love to dress up whenever I can (girly girl). Actually, I find that the older I get, the more the girly girl in me comes out. I find myself wearing more dresses than I used to and in the last year or so, I have found myself wearing more jewelry that I normally do-just earrings & a necklace. Still don't do bracelets and I only wear my 2 rings-left hand wedding ring and right hand the ring my aunt gave me when I was 15.
I do love to shop but since I have to rely on others (Carlos, who hates to shop) to get me to the store, I do most of my shopping online. But, clothes I HAVE to try on.
But, I am not a prude and can be very brass. Porn doesn't bother me (as long as I don't have to listen to it) and I can cuss like a drunken sailor. But, I also can be quite demure when the situation calls for it. I can hobnob with senators, college professors, and business owners as well as with blue collar workers and people who only graduated high school.

I don't fit into most of the male stereotypes, mainly because:
-I don't care about computer technology (oddly enough, I've been the computer support guy at work at times ::))
-I have no interest in porn, really. Never have.
-I'm not into lots of popular films such as Titanic, Lords of the rings, Avatar, Harry Potter, Twilight stuff. No interest in it at all.
-I despise arguing and debating and confronting others.
--I have never bought a computer or car magazine. I'm certainly not the guy who come to with car problems. I never owned a cellphone or ipad or blackberry or whatever they use today.
-I like to talk about feelings and spend hours just chatting with women about anything. Just chatting.
-I can talk to anyone regardless of gender, race, age, sexual orientation, social status, or whether they own 10 mansions or live on the street.
-I do what I want and don't give a shyt about peer pressure.

People tell me that I'm as feminine as they come yet...
1. I like to listen to a wide range of music including 60s psychedelic and classic rock (ie. Pink Floyd and Guns'N'Roses).
2. I'm a little bit domestically messy :-[ ...though I am getting better.
3. I don't find math to be a nightmare, and is in fact more of my forte than the language arts.
4. I actually am a bit of a tight wad, and shop at "cheap" places like Forever 21, Old Navy, Marshall's/Winners...rather than at Guess, Nine West, Tommy...it's all the same quality, imo.
5. I am not a huge talker and rather reserved. Sure I'm shy, but I'm also just naturally quiet, which I think I got from my dad.
6. I don't understand the thrill of shrieking while talking.
7. I don't like to ask for directions because I've got a bit of an independent streak and like to solve problems without assistance.
8. I'm athletic and enjoy running.
9. As a kid, I enjoyed jump roping but I was also the only girl in the class that liked to play marbles.
10. I hate most shades of pink (there are some exceptions).
11. I don't like clothes with ruffles and frills on them.

General Stereotypes
1. Because I never went to college I must be dumb. Well I may not be the smartest crayon in the box but I have a lot of knowledge.
2. Just because I'm in my twenties (28) that doesn't mean that I spend my nights in clubs and bars. I absolutely hate those kinds of places. The huge crowds, the drunks and the creeps that hang out there. Yuck!
3. I live with my mom. To some people that makes me irresponsible. Well I have a full time job and if I saved enough I could live on my own. I've tried it twice and honestly I hated it. Not because of bills etc. but because I don't like living alone.
4. I don't have many friends. I must be a bad person :(
Gender Stereotypes
1. I don't wear dresses or skirts.
2. I admit I am and always have been seriously into make-up but I'm not interested in getting mani-pedis and other spa junk.
3. I'm a huge fan of Horror films and I don't like chick flicks.
4. I don't cook!

General Stereotypes
1. Because I never went to college I must be dumb. Well I may not be the smartest crayon in the box but I have a lot of knowledge.
You are not dumb! I know many people who have a college degree who aren't the brightest light in their own family even. Sometimes people who have college degrees just like to wave their diploma in your face too. They think it's being smart, but it's being arrogant.
General Stereotypes

4. I don't have many friends. I must be a bad person :(
2. That's just fine!. No one says you have to go to clubs and bars. If you don't like those places, no need to go there.
3. You at 28 and live at home. Lots of people who are 28 live at home. This does not make you irresponsible at all. Rent is expensive these days and the price of houses is just unaffordable for young people...even older people. You've tried it twice and don't like it, that's cool. Maybe you like living with your mom, which can be a good thing :) You can be there for each other.
4. You don't need to have many friends. Maybe you are the type of person who just has a few close ones to share things or do things with. That's just great!
Gender Stereotypes

-So true about the college degree thing. I have seen people with Bachelor's and even Master's with 0 social skills.
Case in point: When I had worked at the bank, we had this regular customer that was quite a character because he would not only come in once or even twice a day, but was so paranoid about everything in life and even operated his own "business" that handled complaints about the government. I personally had nothing against him (he was amusing), but pretty much the whole branch treated him like the plague. That fellow apparently had a Master's degree.
-I remember when I lived in the States for a few years, it would seem like the people down there placed way more emphasis on formal education than they do up here in the Great White North. If somebody was having a disagreement, education would often be used as a weapon. Having an education is a nice bonus, but using it to belittle somebody else is just arrogant.

Warped (and you) are correct, a college degree does not make someone 'smart' and lack of one does not make someone 'dumb'. Some people have had the good fortune to get a college degree, some missed that opportunity; I admire especially those that had to work hard to get one. But it doesn't make them better than anyone else. :)
