Subject: The Zip Code thread

Written By: nally on 09/20/06 at 12:10 pm

With all the talk on other threads about zipcodes, I figured I'd start a thread about it.

www.zip-codes.com/
You can use this site to look up zip codes in a number of different ways...by searching for a specific one (by typing it in the zip code search box) and seeing which town it pertains to...or you can search for specific localities and see which zipcodes pertain to the town...you get the idea.

Feel free to talk about anything zipcode-related here.

Edit: I would also like to thank Sr. Morphine for introducing me to the aforementioned site.

Postcodes as they are called in the UK, consist of one or two Letters, a number, then followed by a number and two letters, to located the area or address required.

So for instance West London starts with W, apart for W1 which is a central important area and W2 Bayswater:

W3 Acton
W4 Chiswick
W5 Ealing
W6 Hammersmith
W7 Hanwell
W8 Kensington
W9 Maida Vale
W10 North Kensington
W11 Notting Hill
W12 Shepherds
W13 West Ealing
W14 West Kensington

So the BBC TV Studios based in Wood Lane, Shepherdds Bush has the postcode of W12 7RJ.

Zip code in the U.S. actually have a system (if people didn't already know).  It starts in New England with the 01--- (Mass). The mid-Atlantic states have 1 or 2 going down to Florida with 3. Ohio is 4 and so on until you get to California with 9. So you can usually determain what state someone is in by the zip code.

edited to add that it is actually in Puerto Rico that begins it with 00.

When I worked as a postman, I was taught to be aware of the varies postcodes for different, I doubt if I can remember much of it all now. Though I do remember the USA the higher the number the more west the state/town is.

My home zipcode is 93030; in fact, most of the zipcodes in Ventura County begin with 930xx. (I'm using the X's as placeholders.) It'll be a while before my post count is up there; probably next spring at the earliest. In fact, it'll probably be about that time when it reaches any zipcode in California.

I used to live in L.A. County; in the San Fernando Valley, most of them began with 91xxx.

Does Australia have only four digits?

Better late than never, Philip, you have an answer :

Australia works (as Luke from NZ said a little earlier) on a four digit system.

The leading number denotes what State or Territory one lives in :

2000 - 2999  New South Wales
3000 - 3999  Victoria
4000 - 4999  Queensland
5000 - 5999  South Australia
6000 - 6999  Western Australia
7000 - 7999  Tasmania

Once upon a time, Northern Territory used to start with the Prefix '8' - but they changed to '08' for the first two digits for reasons probably only know by some wise old hermit who guards a bridge over a chasm in a Python movie....  ::)

Nobody knows what '1' did to offend the Postmaster-General.  :P

Australian Capital Territory uses a subset of the New South Wales postcodes (from 2600 - ??) - this is most likely because they are stuck surrounded by NSW....

I have lived in the following postcodes :

4068  Indooroopilly
4051  Enoggera
4075  Oxley
4066  Auchenflower
4503  Kallangur
4505  Burpengary

I've never worked out how specific US Zip Codes are.  Does it just direct you to an area or to a specific road in the area?

In the UK the first part of the code (letters) tells you the county (or part of London), the next part (number) tells you a town or district within that.  After that a number tells you the area of town that it is and the final two letters tells you the street or part of street the house is on.  So our first house was LE11 4ET

LE - Leicestershire
11 - town of Loughborugh
4 - northern part of the town
ET - New Ashby Road between numbers 350 and 400 (I think)

Someone once describe the last two letters of the postcode as the initials of the postman that delivers the mail for that area.

Yes Philip, one station over on the tube, Stockwell Road, just up the street from Brixton station.

I believe that would be an SW9 post code.

I will have to quiz him further on this.

Oh well, he was close, that could be the post code of the house he lived in before, which was indeed in Clapham.

00544 631 HOLTSVILLE SUFFOLK NY

These are special designations for the IRS center in Holtsville.  It's the lowest ZIP code in the USPS system.
The highest is Ketchickan, AK 99950

New York state also has the anomolous ZIP code 06390, also in Suffolk County.  This is for Fisher's Island, which is flush up against the Connecticut coast.  USPS thus assigned it a "Connecticut" ZIP code.  ZIP codes almost always conform to the same initial number associated with the state, but there's no regulation that says they must.  USPS stresses ZIPs are not geographic parameters, but merely delivery designations.

I have never actually been to Arizona, but I do know that is hot and/or humid there just about all the time. My mom went to Phoenix in June of 1990 for a couple days...she definitely remembers how hot it was at that time. :P

June 26, 1990 was the hottest day on record in Phoenix...122 F.  Try driving around with no a/c in your car...pins and needles on your left arm.

It's rarely humid, unless it rains.  Then we all melt.

The 80's in the morning is usually only during days we have triple-digit weather, and that's anywhere from 4-6 months of the year.  The high today was 69 F and low this morning was 50.  It gets cool at night/in the morning.  Hottest time of day now is around 4 PM AZ time.

Yes, I remember hearing about that. However, my mom was only there from June 6th through the morning of the 9th (thankfully). So she dodged that bullet.

Actually, I am not sure if that area code has officially taken effect as of yet. Eight years ago, it was supposed to overlay the 310 area code (south Los Angeles, Malibu, Lynwood, Compton, etc.), but it was shelved at the time. I will investigate it at some point.

Right now, I doubt that my current post tally exists as a zipcode, as the lower 91500's pertain to Burbank.

Yeah, it said something about "overlaying 310."  We have that here in NY -- for instance in Manhattan, there are both 212 and 646 area codes.  It's entirely possible the site I got it from was out of date...

DEMOGRAPHICS (Census 2000?)
Population: 38,487
Households per Zip Code: 14,851
Average House Value:  $70,900
Avg. Income Per Household: $40,705
Persons Per Household: 2.73
White Population: 19,555 (51%)
Black Population: 18,357 (48%)
Hispanic Population: 294 (1%)

In 2001, 39212 was split.  Whereas south Jackson retained 39212, the unincorporated community of Byram (which currently seeks city status) received its own ZIP code: 39272.

Byram also received its own full-service post office in 2001.

So 144118/10 = 14411.8, round it down to 14411 (for I have not reach 144120 yet)

This is funny.. if you're warped.

MADERA - PA
Zip Code - 16661
White Population - 1,079
Black Population - 1

That poor guy!

That is a lame zip code with 666 in it.  I heard in passing on the news today about some town trying to get 666 out of their zip code.  Anyone beside me hear this story?  I googled News and the WWW for any story on it.  None found but I did find this little bit about Topeka, KS with its 666XX zip codes.

http://mysterychronicles.com/viewpost_408561.asp  I cannot speak for the accuracy and/or credibility of this site however.
