I was just wondering, what does everyone here do for a living?

I work at the head office of an emergency services facility as a senior clerk. My wife and I also sell t-shirts on the internet.

Production/Art Buyer Assistant for an advertising agency.  It's cool.  It pays the bills. 

I am what you call a Data Entry Keyer for Royal Mail. We make sure unreadable mail gets posted to people.

I work as a sales associate for an upscale clothing store...serving the rich and snotty, but hey, I'm a slave 2 fashion and I have fun! My ultimate career goal is to become a fashion designer or a television program director; I'm majoring in radio and television broadcasting right now in college, so hopefully in a few more years I'll have my degree!

Recently laid off mechanic. My last job paid pretty well so I will be getting a pretty decent unemployment check. Now i'm going to go back to school for a year and get my degree in industrial electricity.

I am retired but I do a lot of volunteer work. I am the food shelf coordinator for our local food shelf, I serve as a board member of the orginazation that runs the food shelf. I used to do the publicity but don't have to anymore (even though I still do a little). All of this for no pay.  :o  I guess I am just a glutton for punishment.  ;)

I wouldn't say you do nothing. Anyone who stays home to bring up their kids probably has the hardest job in the world, and hopefully most rewarding. We'd be better off with more people like you. ;)

Nothing  ???  Sounds like you keep the whole show together, and I'm sure you put in a good deal more the an 8 hour shift.  What you do is called unpaid labor, which, unfortunately isn't counted in any gov. stats.  Still, it makes the world go round. ;)

I teach History at a small state college in New England, mostly Latin American, with some U.S. thrown in for good measure.  And I love my work, mostly.

awwww, thanks DC & tbullsr.  When I meant I do nothing, I meant as a living.  Everything I do all day every day is my life.  The only thing that could make it better is if I got paid a decent wage to do it.


You raise an interesting issue.  Why should you NOT get paid for what you do?  What you do makes it possible for your husband to spend the hours he does earning the money to pay the bills.  If you didn't do what you do, he couldn';t do what he does.  And  its not he who should pay you, its his employer.  They benefit from not only his labor, but yours.

As to what you do being a part of your life, THAT'S what work use to be.  Obviously we can't, nor should we want to, turnm back the industrial revolution, but before it, both men and women worked at home, and weaved there work into the larger context of their families and their lives.  Think about it, work, which I will define as making the products of nature (including the human mind through education) more useful to us, is what allows us, and every other creature, to survive.  That process should be, and was for millenia, an integral part of our lives, not "alienated" by the time clock, or wage labor, but woven into the fabric our personal and social lives.

To move away from this "political economy and history", think about what you would earn doing what you do every day for a wage.  Then think about whether that wage would be worth the  cumpulsion, the alianation of your work from the love and caring, that you now put into it.  Now think about what hubbie does every working day, and how integrated that is into the life of your family and your community.

I know I'm taking this thread to a different level, but I do look forward to what you and others think about what I have humbly trid to express here.

And no need to thank me for recognizing the work you do.  Cat is (while somewhat lazy) also a good homemaker, and I respect, and, I hope, let her know how much I appreciate her efforts.

That works both ways, though.  It's not just the husband who benefits from the pay he receives from his employer but his wife as well.  That's the reason she's willing to do what she does.  Like it or not, in a free society transactions are voluntary.  One party being much larger than the other does not change this.  A large company requires labor to run and is willing to pay a certain amount for it.  A person requires pay and is willing to work for it.  If they can agree on a price, they have a deal.  You can try to make it seem a lot more complicated than that, but it really is that simple.

I do volunteer work with computers because I like sharing what I know and do well with others who can benefit from stuff like the Internet. Many seniors and differently-abled people use computers with Internet access to learn about health issues,meet others like us,and just plain HAVE FUN. But I hope someday to be well enough to start my own computer business!

Awww thanks FussB.  Its an ocupation that I do avoid mentioning at parties because you either get abused - or asked for advice !!  But yes I get a lot of satisfaction when I sue the directors of a company who havent been paying their employees tax or super.

Am I the only person here who teaches computer skills on a volunteer basis? Just wondering.

I am a legal secretary through the Office of General Counsel for the state.  So basically, I'm a state employee.  The good thing is, the type work we do.  We help children who are in foster care.  We get their parents' rights terminated so that they can be placed for adoption and a more permanent home environment.  It is much more rewarding than working in a private law firm.  At least here our clients are the most innocent clients to have.

Lawn Maintenance Technician (glorified version of mowing lawns in the spring and summer) I'm not too sure what I want to do when I grow up, I have thought about being a DJ (which is a thought I like), being an auto mechanic, I have also thought about being a mechanic in the military.  :)

I am a full-time stay at home mom and wife although...
I have a little business on the side. I sell items on Ebay for myself as well as others. I sell alot of vintage/retro items for myself....and other people recruit me to sell things for them and then we split the profit....I find it to be very fun and it gives us extra spending money. I also want to go back to school and finish (I only have about 1.5 years to go)...I am majoring in photography....but I am waiting for V to start kindergarten (in 2 years or so).

I would have sold all of Vaughns, except I am hoping to have another child someday and if it is a boy....then clotheswise...we have it made!...but yes...people go nuts over childrens clothes....so I would say go for it!

I thought about doing that for awhile...do you do most of your work out of your home? I used to work for a chiropractic office and would do a lot of medical billing for them.  I realize I would have to take classes in medical transcriptions, but I have had a bit of experience with the billing aspect.

I do some from the office and some from home.  How I got into it is a long story.  I intended to work for an MT contractor, but they don't even want to look at you without 3-5+ years of experience.  Working for a general MT firm you have to know all the words any kind of physician uses and the contexts in which they are used.  You also have to be prepared for the idiosyncrasies, accents, and preferences of individual doctors.  That's what makes the whole profession immune from overseas outsourcing.  There's no one-size-fits-all. 
I took a couple of different terminology courses and a pracitical transcribing course, but had no other medical background.  I found getting into the field that a lot of MTs have experience in nursing and so forth.
The firm I work for sucked me in with a good benefits package, plus the person I replaced was an idiot, so as long as I was even semi-competent, they were delighted!

I work inside a huge building on the top floor.  ;D  It's only 4 floors, but it's a 1/4 mile long. Companies like Comcast, Verizon, Covad buy these from us and I make sure that the installation from point A to the business location is done, and then I test it. When I'm done and their T1 is ready, we call them or send them an email to let them know it's good to go! I like my job a lot & I have 100% freedom to come and go as I please, lunch whenever I want and my bosses pretty much leave me alone because I get my work done. It's a good gig.

In order for me to isolate the problem, I'm gonna need to insert my test equipment tool into your jack. In fact, while I'm there testing, I may as well test all of your jacks. I am a Sales Representative at a major Northern California newspaper. We recently merged with the Oakland Tribune and I will soon be handling those accounts, too. We mainly take incoming calls and we also have continuing relationships with customers that we keep on calendar and follow up with from week to week, or month to month. It's had it's ups and downs, but  the job has helped me a lot as far as organization, following up on things, being thorough, and becoming a better speller. Plus it has introduced me to various opportunities and it has introduced me to some wonderful friends.

I had mine in a hospital with midwives. My experience was much better than my friends who had a male doctor.  One friend actually kicked her doctor across the room when he told her the pain couldn't be all that bad!  Bet he never did that again  ;)

Lately, add "nurse" to my list of "job requirements", although I'm still not getting paid :-\\

I've gotten a few customer commendations in my time for providing such good service. However some phone lines don't stay fixed for long or I'm not doing something right because I'm constantly called back for more servicing  ;)

My step-daughter was thinking about doing that. She now has her LPN and is going for her RN. I'm sure she would still love to be a midwife (and with her RN, I'm sure can). BTW, she is also an EXCELLENT mother. (Ok, I'm bragging  ;D ;D )

I've been sorting out some heavy life issues - didn't feel like playing til I got my life in order.  Then I had the flu.  And next week I'm having surgery, so I'll disappear again for a bit.  But like Arnie, I'll be back!  :)

It definitely is!  I'll be propped up in bed and on my laptop Thursday evening - so if I sound even more dippy than usual, I can blame it on the anaesthetic!  ;D

My husband had that done a few years ago, he was on the couch moaning for 3-4 days after...but then again he is a guy.  ;D

I though about it, but I'm a midwife, not a nurse and in many US states (and Canada too) midwives are not autonomous practitioners as they are here, so I would not be able to work the way I like to - which is independently of doctors!  When I qualify and go independent (ie self-employed) I'll be able to ask around
