Just stumbled upon the detailed stats icon for this forum ... can't believe it's taken me all this time :-[ (maybe I knew of it last year and since forgot?).
Anyhow, some interesting stuff. I note that the only two people to be named in all 3 threads (where people are named) are Phillip Eno, and Whistledog.
Whistledog is second only to ChuckyG in 'topics' started, and breathing down his neck.... won't take much...
Phillip has a very handy lead in number of posts .... appearing unassailable. However, I note that Nally has spent almost exactly 50% of the time to achieve around 75% of Phillips posts .... so there may be a challenge mounting from a 'young buck' ;) ;D
Also, Phillips hours on line, whilst highly impressive ... are not out of reach from 'Ceramics Fanatic'.
Fascinating stuff. Will you sleep easily tonight Phillip?
:D ;D :D

I'm sure he bites his fingernails from the pressure of being passed up statistically for number of posts. (not) ;D

I think the way the time is measured is perhaps misleading. I think Philip spends a lot more time browsing around the boards in all the different sections. nally racks up a lot of posts in the games (not sure if that's where he spends most of his time) and probably doesn't visit bits of the board at all.

Nice move sticking that link in here Phillip ... I just made a quick and rough copy. Don't know how you managed to rename it 'more stats' though. Have forgotten how to do that.
We had a lot more members this year than last year.
Well, ^ I see at least Howard was unaware. It's easily missed, I suppose.
I think the way the time is measured is perhaps misleading. I think Philip spends a lot more time browsing around the boards in all the different sections. nally racks up a lot of posts in the games (not sure if that's where he spends most of his time) and probably doesn't visit bits of the board at all.
^ Hence the title of this thread .... you can interpret stats in so many ways.
According to the current ones, we have over 6000 members ... yet how many of those are actually obsolete? I know in the past I've tried to register an account a number of different times, through hotmail/ yahoo etc; to various email accounts. Whilst I managed to get a user name here, a bunch of those names I was never able to activate for some reason or other. I expect that has happened to a lot of other members too, so we may have nothing like 6000 +
Anyhow, I'm sure we can all see there's only a tiny fraction of that membership regularly posting here. When I looked on the 'Big-Boards' stats of rankings a few days ago ... where we're currently ranked 863 by number of posts, I thought it more pertinent to check post ratios. I think we were 160th placing by that standing. We'd probably be far higher (post-ratio wise) if the 6113 members we're supposed to have was trimmed to the actual membership e.g, people who have made at least a handful of postings in the last year?
I mean ... just go to the home page ... then do a members search (click on members list). On that VERY 1ST page alone .... you'll see over 50% have not made a single post .... yet are regarded as members (some since 2005!) ... and I suspect a lot of them had activation problems (too!) .....

Another board I belong to deletes your account after three months if you don't keep it active by logging in occasionally. You are sent an e-mail reminder about two weeks beforehand and then the account is deleted.

Oh, I visit just about all the areas of the board. The only section I've made absolutely no posts in is the Song Parody Contests. And there are certain threads I don't post in at all, mostly due to lack of desire.

If you are idle for more than 5 minutes, you no longer show as being online. This way people can't screw with the statistics and leave their account logged in for like days on end ;D

Things have changed just a little since I started this thread just a month back ... on July 26 (now Aug 26). Just a little in that a glance at the following will show a 'slight' change in membership ... nearly 3,000 members less than we had then. Yeah ... not much difference there! ;) :D
Could this be down to my being fairly active over this period .... have I single-handedly almost halved the membership? :-Planned system maintenance - Purge Inactive accounts
So below is a comparison of this month and last month ....

The male / female ratio favours females more (if there were ever any on this board dumb or crazy enough to be interested in the likes of ANY of us .. in THAT way ... well.. maybe PRESENT company excepted :P ;D :D ). This is probably a result of that membership pruning.
....and
Looks like Phillip just might have taken the potential challenge of the 'young buck' seriously.

Yes ... it looks like our post-ratio has altered just slightly too! ;) :D
Here are the 'big boards' stats:
Number of posts: 1666726
Number of members: 3161
Post per member ratio: 527
Posts last week: 5127
If we sort the boards as per 'Post per member ratio' ...
we are now ranked in 62nd place ... a jump of 98 (!!!) places ... following the membership culling. Probably a better measure of our relative standing, I think.

I would've added more, but my time on the 'puter has been limited as of late. And if our PC hadn't crashed at the end of June, chances are that I'd probably have well over 94,000 posts...and in terms of a zipcode, I would've passed San Francisco sometime in the past two weeks.

Yes ... well cheers for that Mike. 3am now .... and I'm dog tired.
Getting the 2 columns to kind of line up (not perfect) for purposes of comparison was a bloody nightmare. I had to keep deleting spaces, inserting spaces, etc; etc;. Then go over to big-boards etc;
Then re-learn how to change a link's name so it conveyed the sense of what the link was about. I've been a couple of hours messing about with all this.
I'll sleep well tonight.
Keep up the good work, Mike! (and Nally!).

One thing I was concerned about with the inactive member purge was its effects on our Big Board status. What's displayed on the bottom of the messageboard hasn't changed since no posts were deleted, so that's cool. Up until now I never really looked at it and what it actually counted.
Post count per person should have roughly doubled, so yeah, the move up is no surprise. I don't know how far we dropped by member count, but you can't improve every stat.

Yes .. it certainly doesn't seem to have done any harm. I just wonder whether the 'inactive purge' could have been a bit more aggressive. I see you / Chucky allowed 18 months. Seems rather generous to me. I would have gone to 6 months ... possibly 12 months tops. However, anyone with more than 10 posts would have not been deleted.
I suspect anyone with less than 10 posts .. who hasn't posted in the last 6-12 months .. is unlikely to be posting again. Perhaps 5% of such members ... at the very most (I would guess).
As I kind've said before ... I doubt the regular membership / posters here is anything like in the thousands. Looks to me like there's anywhere from 50-200 (tops) different members posting over any one month.
So perhaps it's worth considering a second level purge?
Anyway ... good move, and well done, I reckon.

Initially I was thinking 2 years and less than 25 posts, which was approximately 2300 members. 6 months (and less than 25 posts) would have removed too many people, probably 5000 or so.
If we purge inactive accounts again, it would be a ways in the future, like a year. We might be more aggressive then, but it would look a bit silly for a newbie to see a MB with say 400-500 total members and their number is 10,000.

Well .. I have to confess 'Red Ant' .. that I don't entirely understand what you meant by this comment:
but it would look a bit silly for a newbie to see a MB with say 400-500 total members and their number is 10,000.
I assume 'MB' stands for 'Main board' (??). Anyhow .... below are the top 20 boards as ranked by post ratio, then the pack from 60-65 where we are placed. I can't be bothered to go to the trouble of trying to line up all the columns again ... but as should be evident (for others interested) .. The 1st figure is the Rank position ... then over to the right .... the first of the 3 figures is the post ratio, then the number of posts, finally, the number of members. Boards 2 & 3 here (by Rank) ... have only 18 and 19 members (respectively). The board in 11th spot has a SOLITARY member ... and their 1647 posts are enough to put them in that spot. So ... kind of 'rough justice' in one sense to judge things solely by this method (post ratios). Still, at least we are a lot higher.

'Jeffrey'? I would never have guessed. I thought all this was just a joke ...
Seriously. It's been my name for the past 27 years.

Ant
Post count per person? I assume that's the total # of posts divided by the total # of member accounts..
Anyways, thanks again guys...it was getting a little crazy (for lack of a better word) seeing lots of 'abandoned' user accounts in the memberlist.

Yes ... well ::) ... maybe I needed to add this emoticon to the end .. -> ;) to convey the ironic sense of humour?

Ok nally? (Yes ... I've forgotten his real name again!) :-[ :P :D

Well .. I have to confess 'Red Ant' .. that I don't entirely understand what you meant by this comment:
I assume 'MB' stands for 'Main board' (??).
MB = messageboard. What I was saying is that if total membership was 300-400 people, a newbie with member number 10000 (which we are quickly approaching) might want to know what happened to the other 9600-9700 people.
Post count per person? I assume that's the total # of posts divided by the total # of member accounts..
Yes.

I doubt it...he seems to be pulling further and further ahead!! just like Ken Jennings did from his opponents on Jeopardy! during his 75-game run.
If Philip were to remain idle right now, it would probably take me at least 2 years to catch him.

With the addition of the new Writing On the Walrus forum, I noticed something about my overall stats:
The Writing on the Walrus 7642
Playful Penguin Place 7620
Prior to this move, I had approximately 15,200 posts in the PPP. Now I have exactly 22 more posts in our newly created section than those that remained in PPP! :D

^Well, I just added the two together, which would amount to over 44,600...but you have made some additional posts since then (obviously), so that's why I approximated.

What this board is all about
« on: February 18, 2008, 19:56:45 »
The time has come, the walrus said, to talk of many things.
This is for threads that are at least 6 months old, still active with more than a dozen replies a week . This is to allow new threads in the PPP to flourish and allow the regulars to continue to hang out in their favorite old threads.
You can not start new topics here. You can only respond to existing threads. If you see an old thread in the PPP that should belong here, point it out to a moderator.

Forever, and thats a long, long time.
You know that tear-jerker of a song by Ray Thomas (of the Moody Blues) from one of his solo albums ? (Hopes, wishes and dreams, 1976). ???
That line is almost straight out of one of his songs there ('Didn't I') ....
(Ray Thomas and Nicky James)
They day that love should last forever
forever's such a long long time
and my darling I still love you
is that a crime
Didn't I buy you pretty flowers
didn't I tie them in your hair
didn't we spend those precious hours
without a care
Didn't our love burn like the sun
didn't our passion run so very high
didn't we aim for the moon
but our love died too soon
and that's no lie
Didn't our love burn like the sun
didn't our passion run so very high
didn't we aim for the moon
then our love died too soon
and that's no lie
Didn't I love you in the morning
didn't I love you through the day
then our love left without warning
memories don't die
do they
And they say that love should last forever
forever's such a long long time
and my darling I still love you
is that my crime

Are all those topics counted in the number of posts?

Those numbers pertain to how many posts I made in each of the boards. To access those stats, I simply click on my profile, and then go down to where it says "Show general statistics for this member." I click on that link, and after a few seconds, it gives me all the info.

The # of posts counted in your total as reflected by your name?

Yes.
I have posted in most of the other sections as well (those that weren't listed, such as "the 1980's", "Song Parodies", "Penguin News")...but it only lists the 10 forums in which I've made the most postings.
