Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January) is a national event in the United Kingdom dedicated to the remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust. It was first held in January 2001, and has been on 27 January every year since. The chosen date is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by the Soviet Union in 1945.

Uhhh, because I like the movie. I don't watch movies I DON'T like, Howard.

It is painful to watch, but there's beauty in the pain. I think Spielberg did an amazing job directing this film and if it wasn't as brutally honest as it was, it would have sucked.

The term "Candlemas" refers to the practice found in former Roman Missals whereby a priest on February 2 would bless the candles for use during the year (said candles must be of beeswax). This practice has generally fallen out of use.

Since posting my above reply, I am now thinking when was the last power cut iin my area.
We don't have them as often as when I was a child. My parents always kept some candles in the living room and a paraffin lantern ready in the kitchen. Mind I'm probably talking early to mid 70s with all the strikes and that.
The last power cut I can remember was almost 5 years ago. I remember because the power went off just as I switched the microwave on for my son's bedtime bottle of milk. He was 5 last weekend.

That's right...due to the time difference, it actually happens today. :)
I saw March 21 listed for this year, but it said "00:07" under GMT, so that would translate to March 20th in the States.

May 5: Liberation Day (The Netherlands). For some reason, this is a national holiday only once every five years. I think it should be every year.
btw: yesterday was Commemoration Day (The Netherlands). On the evening of May 4, at 8.00 PM, we commemorate those who died (of war and related matters) during WWII and since (civilians as well as those in military service).

World Naked Bike Ride Day
Duncan Blinkhorn, 45, one of the organisers of the seven-mile Brighton ride, said: "This is a fun if outrageous way to make the serious point that we should not have to tolerate roads, cities and a planet dominated by the brutishness of cars that routinely foul the air we all breathe.
"Bikes and naked bodies harm nobody. Car fumes... are driving us all to climate chaos."
I bet there will be some fumes emitted that may not be all that pleasant ::), but all in all it looks like a fun run. It does seem to me that for those completely naked that the bicycle seat could become quite uncomfortable. :P

Impressive Philip, not too many outside of the African American community know about Juneteenth. It is an official holiday, as opposed to a legal holiday, meaning it is on paper but observances are private, not public. Texas was the last state to inform its slave population of the end of the Civil War and with it the end of slavery, June 19, 1865.

A very important event in U.S. history. For July1-3 half-crazed Civil War buff descend upon the sleepy little town of Gettysburg to reinact a great battle. However there are some slight differences. They now use blanks, and instead of eating hard tack and drinking stream water they now eat bagel chips and fill their canteens with Gatoraide. Generals Meade, Lee, Hancock, Armistead and Reynolds would be proud. :)
