I work as a sales associate for an upscale clothing store...serving the rich and snotty, but hey, I'm a slave 2 fashion and I have fun! I'm actually in the process of finding a new job, which I hope comes soon b/c I need more money to buy pretty things!! My ultimate career goal is to become a fashion designer or a television program director; I'm majoring in radio and television broadcasting right now in college, so hopefully in a few more years I'll have my degree!

I am disabled now but I have worked before,at Bally's Park Place in Atlantic City as a kitchen utility worker(a glorified title for dishwasher and kitchen/restaurant mop pusher)and as a clerical worker at a local McDonalds. I also do volunteer work teaching senior citizens and disabled folks computer skills. It's really cool to share something I know well with others so that they can explore computers and the Internet!

I used to do the publicity but don't have to anymore (even though I still do a little). All of this for no pay.  :o  I guess I am just a glutton for punishment.  ;)

I wouldn't say you do nothing. Anyone who stays home to bring up their kids probably has the hardest job in the world, and hopefully most rewarding. We'd be better off with more people like you. ;)

Nothing  ???  Sounds like you keep the whole show together, and I'm sure you put in a good deal more the an 8 hour shift.  What you do is called unpaid labor, which, unfortunately isn't counted in any gov. stats.  Still, it makes the world go round. ;)

awwww, thanks DC & tbullsr.  When I meant I do nothing, I meant as a living.  Everything I do all day every day is my life.  The only thing that could make it better is if I got paid a decent wage to do it.

You raise an interesting issue.  Why should you NOT get paid for what you do?  What you do makes it possible for your husband to spend the hours he does earning the money to pay the bills.  If you didn't do what you do, he couldn';t do what he does.  And  its not he who should pay you, its his employer.  They benefit from not only his labor, but yours.

As to what you do being a part of your life, THAT'S what work use to be.  Obviously we can't, nor should we want to, turnm back the industrial revolution, but before it, both men and women worked at home, and weaved there work into the larger context of their families and their lives.  Think about it, work, which I will define as making the products of nature (including the human mind through education) more useful to us, is what allows us, and every other creature, to survive.  That process should be, and was for millenia, an integral part of our lives, not "alienated" by the time clock, or wage labor, but woven into the fabric our personal and social lives.

To move away from this "political economy and history", think about what you would earn doing what you do every day for a wage.  Then think about whether that wage would be worth the  cumpulsion, the alianation of your work from the love and caring, that you now put into it.  Now think about what hubbie does every working day, and how integrated that is into the life of your family and your community.

I know I'm taking this thread to a different level, but I do look forward to what you and others think about what I have humbly trid to express here.

And no need to thank me for recognizing the work you do.  Cat is (while somewhat lazy) also a good homemaker, and I respect, and, I hope, let her know how much I appreciate her efforts.

That works both ways, though.  It's not just the husband who benefits from the pay he receives from his employer but his wife as well.  That's the reason she's willing to do what she does.  Like it or not, in a free society transactions are voluntary.  One party being much larger than the other does not change this.  A large company requires labor to run and is willing to pay a certain amount for it.  A person requires pay and is willing to work for it.  If they can agree on a price, they have a deal.  You can try to make it seem a lot more complicated than that, but it really is that simple.

I know what you mean. I volunteer because I believe in the cause (to fight hunger). I know that I am not going to feed the world, just my little corner of it. I like to think that I am succeeding. But, I can't do it alone. I have a lot of other volunteers to help me plus the generousity of this small community with their donations-food and $$$.

I am a legal secretary through the Office of General Counsel for the state.  So basically, I'm a state employee.  The good thing is, the type work we do.  We help children who are in foster care.  We get their parents' rights terminated so that they can be placed for adoption and a more permanent home environment.  It is much more rewarding than working in a private law firm.  At least here our clients are the most innocent clients to have.

I thought about doing that for awhile...do you do most of your work out of your home? I used to work for a chiropractic office and would do a lot of medical billing for them.  I realize I would have to take classes in medical transcriptions, but I have had a bit of experience with the billing aspect.

I do some from the office and some from home.  How I got into it is a long story.  I intended to work for an MT contractor, but they don't even want to look at you without 3-5+ years of experience.  Working for a general MT firm you have to know all the words any kind of physician uses and the contexts in which they are used.  You also have to be prepared for the idiosyncrasies, accents, and preferences of individual doctors.  That's what makes the whole profession immune from overseas outsourcing.  There's no one-size-fits-all.
I took a couple of different terminology courses and a pracitical transcribing course, but had no other medical background.  I found getting into the field that a lot of MTs have experience in nursing and so forth.
The firm I work for sucked me in with a good benefits package, plus the person I replaced was an idiot, so as long as I was even semi-competent, they were delighted!
;D
Right now I'm looking to take a second job as an independent contractor.  I want to, erm, bone-up on my skills.  The place I work for is mostly orthopedics/neurology/osteology/sports medicine, so the vocab is rather limited.

that's sad isn't. That's because there's thousands of lines of code to go through and the 2000 doesn't mean the year. It's the technology of the switch equipment

If my name was William, I wouldn't want to be called Bill. I'd rather be called Willie

..what do I do for a living?  I'm employed by the nations largest telecommunications company. From my desk I remotely access & test newly installed fiber optic T1 lines thruout the state of California.  If you google T1,  you'll get a lot of info on what they are, what they do. I work inside a huge building on the top floor.  ;D  It's only 4 floors, but it's a 1/4 mile long. Companies like Comcast, Verizon, Covad buy these from us and I make sure that the installation from point A to the business location is done, and then I test it. When I'm done and their T1 is ready, we call them or send them an email to let them know it's good to go! I like my job a lot & I have 100% freedom to come and go as I please, lunch whenever I want and my bosses pretty much leave me alone because I get my work done. It's a good gig.

Do you ever have to go to certain points, like telephone towers, etc...to test things..or is it all done from an office? What did you do in order to get into this field?  I know this guy who does similar things for a particular phone company...but he works on the road, traveling to different towers....he gets a company vehicle, and he does a lot of over the road work.

I make sure all the guys in the company vehicles & towers & various buildings do their jobs & get their work done, It's my responsibility to oversee & make sure it's all done. I do none of the physical work. I'm at my desk 100% of the time. How I got into this field? I was a customer service rep for a long time which explains why I'm so good at sucking up to people  ;D maybe that has something to do with my karma count. anyways, the company needed technicians & offered a free 3 month course in digital technology. Me & about 20 others took the courses & had to take a hard test but most of us passed and many of us are now testing techs which is cool that we escaped the gulag together.

that's really cool. Let me ask you this.....the guys that do the footwork in the company vehicles....do they need to already know how to do this...or does the company provide training for an entry level person that is interested in the job?  The reason I ask is because Chris thought of trying to get into doing something like this.....and I know that the guy that my family knows had no prior experience...but they supposedly trained him (he's not offereing too much info though...he's kinda odd).

Yeah, it was cool and saved my ass because I couldn't take customer service much longer. I'm not sure but I think you have to have some electronics or similar background or experience. The company sent us employees emails about 2 weeks ago announcing they needed techs in NorCal and Pasadena and they were having job fairs for installers and repair techs. I am a Sales Representative at a major Northern California newspaper. We recently merged with the Oakland Tribune and I will soon be handling those accounts, too. We mainly take incoming calls and we also have continuing relationships with customers that we keep on calendar and follow up with from week to week, or month to month. It's had it's ups and downs, but  the job has helped me a lot as far as organization, following up on things, being thorough, and becoming a better speller. Plus it has introduced me to various opportunities and it has introduced me to some wonderful friends.

I though about it, but I'm a midwife, not a nurse and in many US states (and Canada too) midwives are not autonomous practitioners as they are here, so I would not be able to work the way I like to - which is independently of doctors!  When I qualify and go independent (ie self-employed) I'll be able to ask around

Well, I'm a roofer, but I don't really want to do that forever. If I remain in the construction business I'd like to start working the heavy machinery. There's good money in it and it's gotta be better than busting ass up and down scaffold all day.  ;D

Eventually I'd like to be a Cop, but that's a career prospect, not just a job. Once I get settled wherever I decide I fancy living, I'll start that process.

That is what I do and the money is great, the work is good, and the benefits. Yesterday we had a 12 degree day, out on the pier where we were working it was 10 degrees colder and windy.  The pile drivers were out in the cold, the heavy equipment guys were in their cabs with the heat on, jackets off.  ;)

Exactly. Now.. there's just no work at the moment (and seeing as I'm moving back to the US in 3 weeks, I've pretty much checked out) but normally November - March I'd be freezing my balls off. You know what it's like right. For every 10 feet up you go it gets about 10 degrees colder.. and the wind chill doubles. The vast majority of us cannot say that we do nothing and money shows up anymore.
I have been looking for a job since last july,& for now I am a monitor on the playground for grammar school kids in the a.m., and on various weekends thruout the year I work at the car races taking tickets at the front gate.  Plus, I am now a dog/house sitter occasionally for friends.
And I don't get paid, but I also put in time at church on the education board for all the programs we plan thru the year --adults, families and children.

Well, in theory I still have one more step before the job is mine, but seeing as I've already started working there I guess I can safely say that the job's as good as mine.

I'm an Audo Technician setting up audio equipment for concerts, plays etc. The job I'm currently just starting actually spans 3 locations, The Touhill performing arts center, the Fox theater and the Scottrade Center. S'ok, I haven't been told yet, but I guess I'll get to work with Van Halen's rig seeing as they're coming in October.

Hey I know that job - I worked as a vet assistant for 3 years.  I never got the luxury of protective wear (I just had to decide which limb I was willing to sacrifice  :o :o :o)

All limbs still intact, luckily I always had a third sense with dogs - I could handle some dogs that were supposedly life threatening.... ??? ??? ???  Don't know what I did different, nothing special???  I just can not train my own dog to quit digging, my yard and her pen could be used for trench warfare :-\\ :-\\ :-\\

I know that dealing with customers it's a hard task. So to you is this song and some karma

I dedicate this song to the workin' man
For ever' man that puts in a hard
Eight or ten hours a day of work and toil and sweat
Always got somebody lookin' down his neck
Tryin' to get more out of 'im
Than he really ought to have to put in.

After twenty-nine long years of workin'
In this shop with Oney standin' over me ...
Today when that old whistle blows
I'll check in all my gear and I'll retire ...
