Subject: Songs that are just a name
Written By: whistledog on 02/04/24 at 8:53 am
I was thinking of making a playlist of songs where the title of the song is just the first name of someone. So I don't mean songs like Michael Caine by Madness, 867-5309/Jenny by Tommy Tutone or Stacy's Mom by Fountains of Wayne. Songs where the title is just the first name of someone and nothing else. I'll begin with a Grammy Award winning classic...

Here is another one...
Initially released in 1979, Janine by Trooper was the band's 12th hit in Canada, and remains their highest charting single, peaking at #7 in 1980. This song is absolutely fantastic and is still often heard on the radio, but sadly did not make it out of Canada. I recommend this one every chance I get!

Here is Shakin' Stevens with his 1989 hit cover of Jezebel that Frankie Laine first made famous in 1951. This one is maybe a loophole as the title refers to the wicked queen who ruled Israel thousands of years ago. I don't think anyone these days is naming their kid Jezebel (at least I hope not) lol

According to Datayze, Jezebel was the 7203rd most popular girls name in 2021. Besides, I didn't see any rule here that said the name couldn't be Biblical or old or otherwise unusual. Otherwise this thread is gonna be as boring as all heck. :o

Here is Julia by Chris Rea from 1993. The was his 34th charting single in the UK and 11th one to reach the Top 40. I tried to post the actual music video but it wouldn't let me stating it was age restricted, which confused me greatly, but now I understand. It's just YouTube being dumb. The song was written about Chris' daughter, Julia Christina, who was 4 at the time, and is seen in the music video.

Yes, Rupert Holmes seems to have penchant for writing cheese like this. He also wrote that tacky "Pina Coloda" song. On the other hand, he's an excellent record producer. He has produced some fine albums for other artists. As long as they don't do his songs! ;D

An interesting song, this. Although Jewish, Paul Simon seems to have written a paen to the Catholic St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music and musicians, apparently beseeching her to end his writer's block, and slightly disguised as a romantic tale. Or so it seemed to me.

"Eloise" is a song first released in 1968 on the MGM label. It was sung by Barry Ryan, and written by his twin brother Paul Ryan. Running for over five minutes, it features strong orchestration, melodramatic vocals, and a brief slow interlude. It sold three million copies worldwide, and reached No. 2 in the UK Singles Chart as published by Record Retailer, but hit No. 1 in the NME and Melody Maker charts. It topped the chart in 17 countries, including Italy, the Netherlands and Australia. The single was released as "Barry Ryan with the Majority". The Majority were a pop band, who for a period, were the backing band for Ryan and who, after renaming to Majority One, had some success in Europe. Ryan also released an Italian-language version of the song, "Eloise (Versione Italiana)", in 1968.

"Diane" (also known as "Diane (I'm in Heaven When I See You Smile)") is a song by Ernö Rapée and Lew Pollack, and was originally written as a theme song for the 1927 silent movie 7th Heaven. Its musical composition entered the public domain on January 1, 2023. The song title is sometimes mistakenly referred to as "My Diane" or confused with the Beach Boys song "My Diane", which is a different song. The song was a popular single by Irish band The Bachelors, which was released in 1964 on the Decca label (Decca F11799) and produced by Michael Barclay. It reached number-one in the UK Singles Chart, number two in Ireland and number three in Australia. The Bachelors were the first act from the Republic of Ireland to have a number-one single in the UK charts. In the US, "Diane" was the Bachelors most successful single, peaking at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1964.

"Valleri" is a song written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart for the Monkees. The single reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent two weeks at #1 on the Cash Box chart in early 1968. The song also rose to #1 in Canada and #12 in the UK. Screen Gems president and music supervisor Don Kirshner asked Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart if they had any "girl's-name" songs to be used in the Monkees television series. After claiming that they had a finished song, Boyce and Hart improvised "Valleri" on their way to Kirshner's office. Kirshner was pleased with their work, and "Valleri" was recorded with Boyce and Hart producing the original sessions in August 1966.

Love that song. It was also a Top 40 hit in Canada. The 1986 cover by The Damned was also very good, IMO if not better...

"Pamela" is a song written by David Paich and Joseph Williams and performed by Toto for the 1988 Toto album The Seventh One. It was the first US single from the album, peaking at #22 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming their final US hit to date. It also reached #9 on the Adult Contemporary chart. In Europe, "Pamela" was the second single, as "Stop Loving You" was selected as the lead single from the album instead.

"Alison" is a song written by and first recorded by Elvis Costello in 1977 for his debut album My Aim Is True on Stiff Records. Costello claimed the song was written as an ode to a woman he saw working at a supermarket, though he has remained vague on the meaning. Though Costello's single never charted, it has become one of his most famous songs. Linda Ronstadt, who covered the song and released her version in 1979, had a moderate hit with it.

Although originally released as the B-side to the Everly Brothers' number 1 hit "All I Have to Do is Dream", their recording of "Claudette" reached number 30 in its own right, and the two songs were jointly listed at number 1 in the UK.

"Maybellene" is a rock and roll song by American artist Chuck Berry, adapted in part from the Western swing fiddle tune "Ida Red". Released in 1955, Berry’s song tells the story of a hot rod race and a broken romance, the lyrics describing a man driving a V8 Ford and chasing his unfaithful girlfriend in her Cadillac Coupe DeVille. It was released in July 1955 as a single by Chess Records, of Chicago, Illinois. Berry's first hit, "Maybellene" is considered a pioneering rock and roll song. Rolling Stone magazine wrote of it, "Rock & roll guitar starts here." The record was an early instance of the complete rock and roll package: youthful subject matter; a small, guitar-driven combo; clear diction; and an atmosphere of unrelenting excitement. The song was a major hit with both black and white audiences, reaching number 1 on Billboard's Rhythm and Blues chart and number 5 on the Popular Records chart. It has received numerous honors and awards. Soon after its initial release, cover versions were recorded by several other artists. The title is misspelled "Maybelline" on several releases.

The song is about his mother Julia and his then-girlfriend (and later wife) Yoko Ono. "Yoko" means "ocean child" in Japanese. "Julia, Ocean Child calls me...". It's a bit blurred together and maybe even a little Freudian.

Scott Walker’s first single in 1968 after leaving The Walker Brothers, “Jackie” was a suitably eclectic way to launch his solo career. It was originally recorded in French by Jacques Brel as “La chanson de Jacky”—Walker’s version was based on a translation by singer-songwriter Mort Shuman. Jacky was Jacques Brel’s childhood nickname, so the song can be seen as hearkening back to the innocence of childhood.

"Terry" is the debut single by British singer Lynn Ripley, who performed under the name Twinkle. It reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart in December 1964, spending a total of fifteen weeks on the charts. The track also reached number 5 on the Canadian charts, spending four weeks in the top 40 in February 1965, and number 2 on the Hong Kong charts in March 1965. The song is about the death of a young man named Terry, killed in a motorcycle accident. It was banned by both the BBC, and by ITV's Ready Steady Go! on grounds of taste (the last line, "Please wait at the gates of heaven for me, Terry" indicated the intention of suicide), but despite (or possibly because of) this, it shot up the charts. It was Twinkle's only top 10 hit, although her follow-up, "Golden Lights" (later covered by the Smiths), reached number 21 in the UK.

"Lucille" is a 1957 rock and roll song originally recorded by American musician Little Richard. Released on Specialty Records in February 1957, the single reached number 1 on the Billboard R&B chart, 21 on the US pop chart, and number 10 on the UK chart. It was composed by Albert Collins (not to be confused with the blues guitarist of the same name) and Little Richard. First pressings of Specialty 78rpm credit Collins as the sole writer. Little Richard bought half of the song's rights while Collins was in Louisiana State Penitentiary. The song foreshadowed the rhythmic feel of 1960s rock music in several ways, including its heavy bassline and slower tempo, inspired by the chugging of a train the band had been riding. The scene-setting sections also feature stop-time breaks and no change in harmony, and it has a darker sound because most of the instruments use a low register.

"Geno" is a 1980 single by Dexys Midnight Runners. Written by Kevin Archer and Kevin Rowland, it was the band's second single and their first UK number one, staying at the top of the Singles Chart for two weeks. The song charted at number two in Ireland. The song is a tribute to soul singer Geno Washington, and performed in approximately the style of Geno Washington's Ram Jam Band. Rowland and Archer began working on the song in early 1979, with Rowland writing lyrics to Archer's music. The song bears resemblance to Zoot Money's Big Roll Band's "One and Only Man" and the Turtles' "Happy Together".

"Laura" is a 1945 popular song. The music, composed by David Raksin for the 1944 movie Laura, which starred Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews, is heard frequently in the movie. The film's director, Otto Preminger, had originally wanted to use Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" as the theme, but Raksin was not convinced that it was suitable. Angered, Preminger gave Raksin one weekend to compose an alternative melody. Raksin later said, and maintained for the rest of his days, that when, over that weekend, his wife sent him a "Dear John" letter, the haunting theme seemed to write itself. The lyrics were written by Johnny Mercer after the film made the tune popular, so he had to title the song "Laura". According to Mercer, he had not yet seen the movie when he wrote the lyrics but was aware that it was a romantic, somewhat haunting story. The song became a jazz standard and has been recorded more than 400 times. Some of the best-known versions are by Woody Herman, Dave Brubeck, Johnny Johnston, Emil Newman, David Rose, Billy Eckstine, Charlie Parker, J. J. Johnson, Carly Simon, Frank Sinatra, Spike Jones and Julie London (included on her 1955 debut album Julie Is Her Name, Vol. 1).

Written by Allen and Greg Kurstin, the song was released as the fourth and final single from the album, on 5 March 2007, by Regal Recordings. In the United Kingdom, it was marketed as a double A-side single, along with "Shame for You". While the melody incorporates a sample of Sandie Shaw's "Puppet on a String", the lyrics directly describe Allen's real life younger brother (aged 20 at the time of the single's release), actor Alfie Allen, criticising him for laziness. The single peaked inside the top 20 of the charts in New Zealand and on the UK Singles Chart, where it became her third single to do so.
