Subject: Weird Songs... But You Like 'Em Anyway
Written By: whistledog on 01/12/24 at 12:48 am
Japan were a British new wave band who had a string of hit singles in the UK during the early 80s, the biggest of which was called Ghosts which peaked at #5 in 1982. I like Japan, but I didn't used to like this song because it was so unusual, and not really a song you could fast dance or even slow dance to. Over the years, I decided to give it another chance, and after many listens, I now really like it, and I can even sing along to it, but I still find it quite a strange song lol

Here is John Wayne is Big Leggy by a British duo called Haysi Fantayzee. This peaked at UK #11 in 1982. No word of a lie, the lyrics talk about the famous actor John Wayne and his inability to make love to a Native-American woman due to his bandolier (ammunition belt) getting in the way, so he suggests they do it doggy style. It doesn't get any more weird than that, but this song is really catchy! It is a super guilty pleasure for me!

I don't know about the "but you like 'em anyway" part, because I'm not all that crazy about this song, but it's definitely got the "weird" part down.

Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance
I get an error that says "The uploader has not made this video available in your country" which makes me laugh because I see the video was uploaded by the official Men Without Hats YouTube page, and they are a Canadian band. So maybe they are like, Hey Canada. You already know this song, so we're not gonna let you see it lol

The only song I know by that band is “Shiny Shiny”, which does sound weird, but it’s also catchy in a sense. :D

Here is The Hampsterdance Song by Hampton the Hampster from the year 2000. It's built around a sped-up sample of the song Whistle Stop by Roger Miller that was taken from the 1973 animated Robin Hood cartoon by Disney. The sample began as a website that featured animated GIFs of dancing hampsters that someone had made as a gag to see how much traffiic could generate, and when it went viral, a Canadian dance group called The Boomtang Boys decided to make it a song and it became a hit in several countries, most notably in Australia, where it was so popoular, further singles under the Hampton the Hampster name became hits there

Here is a song called Ruff Mix by Wonderdog from 1982. Wonderdog was a name created by Harry Thurmann, the composer of the song, and distribution rights to the song in the UK were purchased by a then unknown Simon Cowell, who dressed up in a dog suit and went on various music/dance shows to promote the song. It ended up becoming a Top 40 hit in the UK and while it's a silly song, the more you listen to it, the catchier it gets.
To this day, when contestants go on talent shows, of which Simon is a judge, and mention the song, he is not too pleased lol
