I am more curious what else is out there. Mick and Keith wrote some great songs!

One of the most famous Rolling Stones covers here in Canada is Under My Thumb by a group called Streetheart. I have talked about this one many times before as it is just an excellent song and I love it!
Recorded and released in 1979, it peaked at #20 in Canada, the first week of February 1980. Seen in the video on the drums is Matt Frenette, who at the time was a member of the band. Shortly before the single release of this, he left to help form a new band called Loverboy, who went onto major stardom in the 80s

The first one that came to my mind was Melanie's version of "Ruby Tuesday" which she made so much her own that it is a fan favorite she plays in concert to this day. It is from the 1970 "Candles in the Rain" album that also brought you the #1 hit "Lay Down (Candles In The rain").

Remember, The Flying Burrito Brothers released "Wild Horses" BEFORE The Stones did. Leading to rumors that go on to this day that it was actually written or co-written by Gram Parsons, which is manifestly not true. But due to Parsons' friendship with Keith Richards, The Stones let the Burritos put it on their 1970 album "Burrito Deluxe" as long as they didn't release it as a single. The Stones own version, of course, came out in 1971.

I found this one through a 1976 K-Tel album called Power House. Here is Tell Me by a group called Airlift and it peaked at #40 in Canada. The Stones 1964 original was their first Top 40 hit in the US and Canada, but was never released as a single in the UK.

The ubiquitous Linda Ronstadt, whom I was never a fan of, did this highly sanitized version of "Tumblin' Dice" in 1977.

In 1986, Aretha Franklin had a hit with Jumpin' Jack Flash from the Whoppi Goldberg film of the same name. Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood appear on the song and in the music video

A lesser known artist out of Detroit named Jonathan Round covered "Sympathy For The Devil" in a rather unique way in 1971. Believe it or not, this got airplay (FM, of course), which is how I know about it.

I'd never heard of that one before. It wasn't half bad

"As Tears Go By" is a song written by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Rolling Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Marianne Faithfull recorded and released it as a single in the United Kingdom in 1964. Her song peaked at number nine on both the UK and Irish singles charts. Later, the Rolling Stones recorded their own version, which was included on the American album December's Children (And Everybody's). London Records released it as a single, which reached number six in the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

A few years ago, to get away from the hustle and bustle of life for a day, we (the family and a close friend of the family) went to Liverpool for the day, in order to visit one the museums dedicated to the The Beatles. Walking along Liverpool docks, there was a stage with a band playing songs. As we got closer we could hear the song, it was "Sympathy For The Devil", I wanted to shout out 'sacrilege' for isn't it that Liverpool is the home of Beatles, when The Rolling Stones are London based?

Marianne Faithfull
"Sister Morphine"
1969
(produced by Mick Jagger)
I don't know if this is TECHNICALLY a cover, since she actually co-wrote the song with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. BUT, her name was never included on the writing credits of her own 1969 version or The Stones 1971 version. It was not until 1994, after a lawsuit, that Faithfull was established as the rightful co-writer and her name included on the credits of all future reissues.

By the way, have you noticed how many of these covers are by women? So much for the old "The Stones are sexist" cannard. Well, they ARE sexist. But music is another realm. It exists above and beyond gender. Women can own these songs and make them into something else. Or should I say, REVEAL something else that is basically already there.

"Under My Thumb"
1975
"Under My Thumb" has been the subject of multiple cover versions, some of which have charted in the US and UK. The song was subject to covers by Del Shannon and Wayne Gibson in 1966. Shannon's version reached number 129 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart. Gibson's version failed to chart in 1966, but later charted at number 17 in the UK in 1974 after gaining popularity in the Northern Soul scene. In response to the Rolling Stones' Redlands bust in 1967, The Who recorded a cover version of "Under My Thumb".

In 1982, the Stars on 45 released a Rolling Stones medley. First released in their native Holland as The Greatest Rock 'N' Roll Band in the World, it was a Top 40 hit there. It was released in the US and Canada as Rollin' Stars by Stars on 45 and in the UK as Stars Medley: The Greatest Rock 'N' Roll Band in the World by Starsound and failed to chart.
