It is estimated that there have been more than 25,000 recordings of "Summertime", originally composed by George Gershwin as an aria for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The first singer to have a hit with the song was Billie Holiday in 1936.
"Summertime" is an aria composed in 1934 by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose Heyward, the author of the novel Porgy on which the opera was based, although the song is also co-credited to Ira Gershwin by ASCAP.

The song by DJ Jazzy Jeff is a totally different song that shares the same title.
