Subject: Actors/Actresses who had hit songs
Written By: whistledog on 06/02/21 at 1:12 am
I'm not talking about those who went from singing to acting. Those who are primarily known for their work on the big and small screens who have had a hit or several hits
I'll begin with one I bet not a lot may knew existed ...
In December of 1986, Sir Anthony Hopkins peaked at #75 in the UK with a song called Distant Star

In 1980, Burt Reynolds had a hit called Let's Do Something Cheap and Superficial. It is from the soundtrack to Smokey and the Bandit II though it is not actually heard in the film, it's only mentioned as being a poor seller. It peaked at #88 in the US and on the country charts, it peaked at #51 in the US and #33 in Canada

Not a hit for Christopher Plummer, he is known for singing "Edelweiss" in The Sound of Music, but it was not him, it was dubbed by Bill Lee of the singing group The Mellomen, he (Christopher Plummer) learned to play the guitar for his part, but the guitar were re-dubbed, and it was the last song that Oscar Hammerstein II wrote before his death on August 23, 1960.

American Porn star Traci Lords sings the female portion of the 1992 hit Little Baby Nothing by Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers. This reached #29 in the UK and still sounds great!

Anthony Newley, an English actor, singer and songwriter. He achieved success as a performer in such diverse fields as rock and roll and stage and screen acting. As a recording artist he enjoyed a dozen Top 40 entries on the UK Singles Chart between 1959 and 1962, including two number one hits. With songwriting partner Leslie Bricusse, Newley wrote "Feeling Good", which was popularised by Nina Simone and covered by many other popular artists, as well as the lyrics for the title song of 1964 film Goldfinger (the music was composed by John Barry). Bricusse and Newley received an Academy Award nomination for the film score of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971). The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles & Albums described Newley as "among the most innovative UK acts of the early rock years before moving into musicals and cabaret". Newley was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1989. His successful pop music career as a vocalist began in May 1959 with the song "I've Waited So Long", a number 3 hit in the UK charts thanks to the exposure it received as being featured in the film Idol on Parade. This was quickly followed by his number 6 hit "Personality" and then two number 1 hits in early 1960: "Why" (originally a 1959 US hit for Frankie Avalon) and "Do You Mind?" (written by Lionel Bart).

"Goodness Gracious Me" is a comedy song recorded by Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren. Released by Parlophone, it was a top 5 UK single in 1960. It features Sellers acting the role of an Indian doctor, and Loren of his wealthy Italian patient – who fall in love. The song was conceived and instigated by George Martin, who was the producer at that time of Peter Sellers's comedy recordings. Martin commissioned David Lee and Herbert Kretzmer to write the song.

In 1985, Billy Crystal released a single titled You Look Marvelous which he sang as his popular Saturday Night Live character Fernando. Written by Billy and Paul Shaffer, it reached #58 in the US and #17 in Canada. To me, this is more than just a comedy song. It's a solid pop song that to this day is still one of my most favourite songs ever!

In 1982, Mel Brooks reached #67 on the US Dance chart with a song called It's Good to Be the King. The song title is taken from a phrase spoken in his 1981 film The History of the World, Part 1

In 1983, Mel Brooks released another single titled To Be or Not to Be (The Hitler Rap). A slight re-working of It's Good to Be the King, it appears on the soundtrack to his film To Be or Not to Be and while not popular in the US, it peaked at #12 in the UK and like the previously mentioned one, is a great dance tune!

Here is The Americans (A Canadian's Opinion). It started out as a speech that was read by Canadian journalist Gordon Sinclair about how Americans were generous to help in times of crisis. It became so popular, it was decided to be released as a single in 1973. Set to the tune of The Battle of The Hymn Republic, The Americans (A Canadian's Opinion) by Gordon Sinclair reached #24 in the US and #30 in Canada.
That same year, another Canadian news journalist named Byron MacGregor released a version. Set to America the Beautiful, it proved more popular in the US reaching #4, but was less popular in Canada, where it reached #42

100% it does. At the time, he was primarily known for Kotter and Fever. He had 6 US Hot 100 hits between 1976-1979. Not bad for someone who isn't best known as a singer. His actor brother Joey was also briefly a singer, though in his case, he started out as a singer and then turned to acting when the singing wasn't working out for him lol

Will Smith.
However, I think he was actually a singer before he went into acting. And over the last 20 years or so, he's primarily been more of an actor than a musician.
Edit: I had not read the opening post of this thread before I made this reply. Still, he did both singing and acting for a while.

Speaking of Welcome Back, Kotter, Gabe Kaplan had a hit in 1977 called Up Your Nose. It peaked at #93 in the US

Jennifer Lopez was also such a person.
She was an actress before becoming a singer in the late 1990s into the early 2000s (during which time she scored several hits; people also began referring to her by her shortened name, J-Lo).

Alyson and Amanda Joy Michalka, a duo of sisters who recorded together as Aly and AJ. Both of them are actresses and musicians, active in both fields since their teenage years. They had minor hits on the charts (such as "Rush" in 2005, "Chemicals React" in 2006), but such songs were considered hits nonetheless. Also, both have primarily concentrated on acting in recent years, as young adults.

I can name another: Selena Gomez.
She started out as an actress/child performer in the early-mid 2000s (and starred in the sitcom Wizards Of Waverly Place which began production in 2007) before starting her music career by 2009 (first with her band The Scene, later as an individual).

And this is off topic, but she has 240 Million followers on Instagram! That's nearing the entire world. I admire that about her.

240 million is certainly a lot of followers, and Selena Gomez is a pleasant enough performer, but I would hardly call it "nearing the entire world" when you consider the world has an estimated 7.674 billion people. Not even close.
