Subject: Same Artist, Same Album, Different Title

Written By: whistledog on 05/23/21 at 9:51 pm

Some of these are quite interesting ...

In 1984, British Rockabilly giant Shakin' Stevens released a compilation album simply titled Greatest Hits.  The next year, it was released in Canada under the title A Rockin' Good Way.  The UK release has 18 tracks, whereas the Canadian version only has 16.  I don't know which version America got, or if this was even released in the US.  The Internet doesn't seem to have an answer that I can find

In 1985, the Australian pop group Mental As Anything released an album titled Fundamental As Anything.  For the world outside of Australia and New Zealand, the title was simply just called Fundamental and featured different album art.  This album was not a success in North America, which is a shame because the single Live it Up is such a fantastic song.  A must for any 80's music fan!

Donovan's first album from 1965 was released in England as "What's Bin Did and What's Bin Hid" and in America as "Catch the Wind". Exact same album.

the funny thing is, it looks so coordinated, but I don't think it was intentional. The American pressing just got it wrong.

Melanie's first album in 1968 was called "Born To Be". After her successful appearance at Woodstock in 1969 the record company, Buddah (sic), re-released it as "My First Album".

"David Bowie", also known as "Man of Words/Man of Music" and "Space Oddity", is the second album by David Bowie.

"David Bowie"
UK Stereo LP: The album is released under the title David Bowie on the 14 of November, 1969 by the Phillips record label. This marks the first official release of the album.

"Man of Words/Man of Music"
US Stereo LP: Later on in 1969, the album is released in the US under the name "Man of Words/Man of Music" on the Mercury record label. This record contained an alternate cover that only ever appeared on this edition of the album. This rebranding was due to a lack of common knowledge of the name 'David Bowie' in the US.

"Space Oddity"
US Stereo LP. Due to the popularity of the song  "Space Oddity", the record is rebranded once more and released under the name of the hit song in 1972 by RCA. The cover of the album is also changed to a new photo, which remains the cover until the 1999 rerelease by EMI/Virgin when it is reverted back to it's original state.

The 1985 greatest hits album The Singles 81-85 by Depeche Mode was released in the US and Canada as Catching Up With Depeche Mode with a few omitted tracks because in 1984, Sire Records released a North American compilation titled People Are People as an attempt to sort of introduce Depeche Mode to the North American market.

At the time of this singles release, Depeche Mode only had 2 US Hot 100 hits to their credit (Master and Servant and People Are People) whereas they had 12 Top 40 hits in their native UK so the title change made sense.

In 1983, The Thompson Twins released their breakthrough album Quick Step & Side Kick.  In the US and Canada, it was released as Side Kicks.  I am not sure why the title was changed, but I like the British title better
