One of my favourites is the 1984 Madness song Michael Caine. While he doesn't appear in the video, he appears on the song stating "My name is Michael Caine"

Here is a fun one from 2001 called Crying at the Discotheque by a Swedish group called Alcazar. The lyric goes "The golden years, the silver tears. You wore a tie like Richard Gere"

One more for now ... This is the 1985 hit You Look Marvelous by Billy Crystal. Famous people mentioned: Syd Charisse, Fred Astaire, Cyndi Lauper, Tina Turner, Jayne Meadows, Grace Jones, Cher, Chaka Khan, Vanity, Appollonia, Madonna, Sting, Eddie Van Halen and Bert Convy. Sting appears in the video as himself during the lyric "Oh look, there's Sting looking for his last name in the dip"

"Legend of a Mind". One of my favorite Moody Blues songs.
Timothy Leary's dead. Noooo, no, no, no, he's outsiiiiiide looking in.
9f562HPJIOI
Another song on the same album, "Dr Livingstone, I Presume" mentions, of course, Dr David Livingstone as well as Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Christopher Columbus.
"Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder
The titular Duke refers to Duke Ellington. Also mentioned in the lyrics: "Basie" (Count Basie), "Miller" (Glenn Miller), "Satchmo" (Louis Armstrong) and "Ella" (Ella Fitzgerald).
s6fPN5aQVDI
"Candle in the Wind" - Elton John
Goodbye Norma Jean, though I never knew you at all
Original version about Marilyn Monroe
1997 version about Princess Diana
"Abraham, Martin and John" - Dion
Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr, John F Kennedy and Robert Kennedy
"Master Blaster (Jammin')" - Stevie Wonder
Mentions Bob Marley
"I Lost on Jeopardy" - Weird Al Yankovich
Mentions Art Flemming and Don Pardo
"Mrs. Robinson" - Simon & Garfunkel
Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?
Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you ou-ou-ou
What's that you say, Mrs Robinson?
"Joltin Joe has left and gone away hey-hey-hey hey-hey-hey."
"To The Kill" - Violent Femmes
Mentions Al Capone
"Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" - Paul & Linda McCartney
Admiral Halsey notified me
He had to have a bath or he couldn't get to sea
I had another look and I had a cuppa tea and pot of pie
Pot of pie?
The butter wouldn't melt so I put in the pie
"Quinn the Eskimo (Mighty Quinn)" - Bob Dylan
Presumably referencing Anthony Quinn's role in The Savage Innocents (1960)
"Creeque Alley" - The Mamas & The Papas
Mentions several famous musicians: John & Michelle Phillips (getting kind of itchy just to leave the folk music behind), Zal Yanovsky and Denny Doherty (working for a penny trying to get a fish on the line), John Sebastian (of Lovin' Spoonful fame), Roger McGuinn of The Byrds, Barry McGuire (of The New Christy Minstrels), Cass Elliot (planned to go to Swarthmore College, but she changed her mind one day ... to join The Mamas & The Papas).
"Don't Stand So Close To Me" - The Police
He starts to shake and cough, just like the old man in that famous book by Vladimir Nabokov
"Bohemian Rhapsody" - Queen
Galileo, Galileo, Galileo, Galileo, Galileo
"Hey Nineteen" - Steely Dan
Hey, Nineteen, that's 'Retha Franklin!
She don't remember the Queen of Soul??!??!!???
I always was skeptical about the premise here. Someone born in 1961 (1980 - 19) should definitely know Aretha Franklin. I was born in 1966 and had probably the most sheltered childhood imaginable, and I still knew who she was even before The Blue Brothers came out. Her music was on the airwaves in the late 60s and early 70s. I guess Scarsdale is even more insular than East Oahu.
"Casey Jones" - Grateful Dead
There was a real train engineer named Casey Jones, whom the song is based on.
"You Talk Too Much" - Run DMC
You're the damn Walter Cronkite of the neighborhood
The Barbara Walters, the Howard Cosell
You always come around with a story to tell
"Sister Angela" - Claudia Lennear
About Angela Davis
"Roisin Dubh (Black Rose)" - Thin Lizzy
It was a joy that Joyce brought to me
While William Butler waits
And Oscar - he's going wild!
Ah, sure Brendan , where have you been?
Looking for a girl with green eyes
My dark Rosaline is my colleen
That Georgie knows best
Van is The Man
Starvation once again
Drinking whiskey from the jar-o
Synge's Playboys of the Western World
As Shaw, Sean I was born and reared there
Where the Mountains of Mourne come down to the sea
It's such a long long way to Tipperrary

How about this fun little ditty -
The Beatles - Dig It (1970)
Dig this unreleased, unedited version. I first heard it on a bootleg I bought in a headshop in the early 70s. I think it was $4.99. That was a FORTUNE for an album back then. They were usually $3.29. There were so many worlds and treasures to discover back then. And no internet to make it easy.

Yeah, I was 20 when this came out. I also thought most people my age should "remember" Aretha Franklin. I read some stuff about this song; the band was mostly trying to make a point about a generation gap between dating people.

That's true. It's not as popular as "One Week", but it does mention a celeb in the title.

That's funny because "Be My Yoko Ono" is the only Bareneaked Ladies song I ever heard of except for the "Big Bang Theory" theme song. They seem like kind of an annoying band in general.

O0 Good pick, always liked that song, very timely. I'm slightly more familiar with the Miracles' cover (it's on their Anthology which I've played to death).

A surprisingly good version of that song was also done by comedian Moms Mabley. Remember her? She was always on talk shows in the 60s and 70s. Her whole routine was that she dressed like a homeless "bag lady" as they used to be called. She also managed to slyly slip in a lot of social commentary, especially about race, in this guise of a toothless old woman.

Moms Mabley - now there's a blast from the past! I recall seeing her on TV a number of times in her later years, but I don't remember her singing.

A couple of years ago there was a documentary on Jackie "Moms" Mabley on HBO. It was made by Whoopi Goldberg who crowdsourced the funds to make it from one of those sites like Go Fund Me. It turns out that not only was Moms gay, but if she was around today she'd be considered transgender. In her personal life she wore exclusively men's clothes (NICE ones too) and was referred to by her friends as "Mr. Moms" and always had a couple of younger, good looking women on her arm. She had been doing this since the 1930s or 40s. Apparently it was an open secret in Hollywood, but of course the public knew nothing about it. Ironic too that her comedy routines consisted mainly of her attempts to "get a man". But that's how things were then. Whoopi Goldberg said she made the documentary because Moms was a trailblazing pioneer for female comedians.

Another reference to Yoko Ono, "Yoko brought her walrus", the "walrus" obviously being John Lennon. Then there is "Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan's shoes". Not a reference to Howard Hughes as I originally thought, but a reference to George Harrison! "Mr. Hughes" was a pseudonym sometimes employed by Harrison. And Dylan is Dylan, of course.
