Subject: Popularity of Movie Genres Through the Decades

Written By: Mat1991 on 05/04/20 at 9:20 pm

I found this interesting interactive graphic concerning the popularity of different movie genres over the last 100 years.

The most interesting tidbits I found were that horror, thriller, and documentaries have exploded in popularity in the 2010s; westerns have declined in popularity since the 1960s; musicals peaked in the 1930s through '40s before declining since the '60s; and comedy has remained steadily popular since the '40s.

What are some interesting things y'all notice?

To me, over about the last decade, pretty much everything seems to be some sort of action, sci fi, supernatural, fantasy, apocalypse, secret agents....

Either that or Disney movies. Or people being jackwagons.

Seems almost impossible to find a good old fashioned romantic love story or sappy comedy anymore.

I just noticed that the scales aren't consistent, which makes it tricky to compare.

The most popular genres at the moment are documentary, comedy, thriller and horor, roughly in that order. It sounds about right. In reverse order, I would say those are my favourite genres.

One Movie Genre not included is 'biographical drama film' and this category has over the last few years many Best Actor winning Academy Awards.

Oh so true, and the trend now is to mix the two together and produce those horrid  'sex related' comedies, which I find totally unfunny.
