Subject: If you are 18 or more, do you care about movie or game ratings?
Written By: Braeden on 08/12/19 at 8:07 pm
By movie or game ratings, I mean the ratings that show what age for which something is appropriate, like the G, PG, PG-13, R movie ratings. If you are watching a movie or playing a game, for yourself, do you care what it is rated?

I don't think I've cared ever, even when I was a kid :P
Mortal Kombat 64 and Nightmare Creatures are two M rated games I remember buying when I was around 6/7 years old.

As regard in movie rating I do care, especially for younger children like my granddaughter.

No, it doesn't matter to me cause I'm an older adult.

Same with me; it doesn't affect me.
Even the TV show ratings used in the U.S. (TV-G, TV-PG, TV-14, TV-MA) never affected me, because I was already in my teens when they were established. (However, if they had been around in the early 90's, a lot of the shows I watched then would have likely been labeled TV-Y, or some TV-Y7.)

Nope. Had no effect or influence on me before or after I was 18. I saw what I wanted to see when I wanted to see it, movie-wise. And in the 60s/early 70s the ratings were G, M, R and X. Pure and simple. Nothing else. No weird hyphenated things like PG-13 and NC-17. "R" meant persons under 16 not admitted unless accompanied by a parent or guardian, and "X" meant persons under 16 (not 18 as is sometimes mistakenly thought) not admitted at all. In today's thinking "X" means a pornographic film. Back then mainstream films would get an "X" rating. Some would even win Academy Awards for best picture like "Midnight Cowboy". There was nothing pornographic about it.

I remember once, around five years ago, I was in cinema to view a film in central London, and at the start of the film, as always, the BBFC (British Board of Film Censors) Certificate appeared on screen, announcing the rating as '15' (over 15 years old only) and the film film contains strong swearing and violence. A man in the audience a few rows in front of me shouted out "What no sex..." ;D

When I got older I was able to see what I wanted and that included anything from an R to an X rating.

At the last few years still at school, because I was tall for my age, I managed to get into X-Rated films underage, my claim to fame is "The Exorcist" back in 1973.

Of course, "X" was later replaced by "NC-17."
Many such films never appealed to me, however. :-\\

I care about ratings. I "can" doesn't always mean I "should".
Some things are just offensive to me and I'm not entertained by them. Even too much profane language can turn me towards disgust. But I may be more sensitive than average to such things. :-\\

I am glad to not have to care about it. I think most games suited for kids are too nerdy or geeky. I am thankful Fortnite and Overwatch exist only because of that.

I actually agree with this, entirely.

So that would include anything from an X to an R rating? And if someone was to cuss or show body parts?

There is no "X" rating anymore. It was replaced by N-17 in 1990. Previously, films like "Midnight Cowboy" and "Clockwork Orange" were rated "X" by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) because of very adult themes of sex or violence. When most people think of "X" nowadays thy think of pornography. The porn industry, which operated outside of the mainstream film industry, self-applied the rating "X" to their product as a sort of branding or trademark. It had nothing to do with the MPAA who apply ratings to mainstream films.

I care about ratings. Because it roughly gives me an idea of what kind of show I want to watch. And what kind of show I want to watch with my kid.
