It means different things to people. For me, it's 15+ years ago.

It does for me as well, but generally I think the previous year, as in the previous day for yesterday.

That's how I associated the word when I first heard it. Because the word "yesterday" typically means "the day before today", I intuitively assumed that the term "yesteryear" had an analogous meaning ("last year"). But that's not really the case.
