Subject: Do "generations" exist to you?
Written By: Tyrannosaurus Rex on 09/12/18 at 8:42 pm
I was born in 1999, which would make me an older member of Generation Z according to a vast majority of modern sources, which start Gen Z in the 1995-1997 range.
Even as late as around 2012, generation spans were around 20-22 years long. Obviously, generations should not go that long; someone born in 1980 could literally be the parent of someone born in 2000.
Nowadays, generation seem to be smaller; probably around 15 or 16 years long. Even this is too big of a span. I don't see how someone born in 1997 (Pew's starting point of Generation Z) could be in the same generation as someone born in 2011 or 2012.
There are even people who split generations up and use terms like "Older Millennials" (most commonly defined as people born from 1981 to 1988) and "Younger Millennials" (most commonly defined as people born from 1989 to 1996). Even that could be an issue because an eight year difference is still significant. In fact, I would even say that an eight year gap is a borderline generation gap.
I personally define my generation as being people about two or three years older and younger than me. I never want to identify with a generation label because I can't really see how I could be in the same generation as someone who is in Kindergarten now, but at the same time, I can't really see how I could be in the same generation as someone born in around 1985.

I think it's about time we stop making these kinds of generation threads.
