An American perspective: instrumental music has been an essential element of the catalog of popular music from the Rock and Roll era (1955-present) - but IMO as each decade rolled along, instrumental music seemed to decrease in favor. It was huge in the 50's, pretty big in the 60's, still somewhat influential in the 70's, only slightly considered in the 80's, and seemingly out of favor among "Western" genres (this to exclude "World" music) in the 90's and beyond. There are exceptions in the house/EDM genre, in movie soundtracks, throwback styles, or very ethnic genres, post-1990.
I'm eager to hear the opinions of others on the topic of instrumental music's popularity. :)
