Subject: Aretha Franklin (the Queen of Soul) Tribute

Written By: AmericanGirl on 08/24/18 at 3:38 pm

I don't know about everyone, but I sincerely feel the loss of the Queen of Soul.  The more I digest her recent departure, the more I feel compelled to tribute her.  Thus this topic.

If you're too young to know Aretha Franklin, you're invited to park here and check out this thread.  For the rest of us, looking for contributions:
1) Post a video of a song you like
2) Post a video of a concert clip, TV performance, movie clip or interview
3) Any little vignette you want to write will do, too

Photos also welcome.  As always, please keep the number or videos and/or photos to a reasonable number per post.

I'll start.  This romantic gem always moved me, even as I was at the tender age of 12 when it screamed up the charts and into my heart

^ O0  Nice 80's picks!  Aretha had a few good duets in the 80's...

Speaking of 80's, here's a quote from the 1980 Steely Dan smash, Hey Nineteen, apparently a lament from the singer's perspective:

"Hey Nineteen, that's 'Retha Franklin
She don't remember the Queen of Soul
It's hard times befallen the soul survivors
She thinks I'm crazy, but I'm just growing old..."

I always liked the song.  When I heard that lyric, I thought, wow, some young youngster, to have never heard of Aretha Franklin.  (Then I thought about it and realized I was only 20 - not too far from 19  ;D)

At the time in 1980, Aretha was coming through a Disco era drought - no substantial hits since '76ish.  That's an eternity back then.  So it was understandable that someone very young might not know her.  That is, until she came roaring back in the 80's.

In the 80's, prior to her string of hits, she became a household name again doing something not so typical for her - gracing the silver screen.  Here's her appearance in the 1980 comedy smash, the Blues Brothers (btw one of my all time favorite movies)

This tasty Aretha Franklin smash could fall into the "almost forgotten" category.  It was cowritten by Ms. Franklin and was a top 10 hit in the spring of '68.

This much beloved smash tore up the charts in the mid-70's, deservedly so.  A Stevie Wonder tune cover - but Ms. Franklin made it her own.

^ O0 nice picks!

What would a tribute to the Queen be without her signature smash?  So here it is:

Aretha Franklin - Respect (1967)  :)
