Subject: Top 5 years in gaming

Written By: SeaCaptainMan97 on 05/23/18 at 9:50 am

In your opinion, what are the top 5 best years when it comes to video game releases?
Here's my list;

1. 2007
- Super Mario Galaxy, Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Bioshock, Portal, God of War II, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Half Life 2: Episode 2, Rock Band, Guitar Hero III, Team Fortress 2, Portal, Mass Effect, Crysis, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
The first full year of the 7th Gaming Generation being in full swing, the year that saw the birth of many great franchises, and before the gaming market got over saturated with DLC, and before COD over saturated the market, being that the game that started off the COD craze didn't come out until November of this year, and many people still consider COD4 the best COD.

2. 2013
- Super Mario 3D World, Rayman Legends, Gone Home, Grand Theft Auto V, The Last of Us, Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag, Tomb Raider, Saints Row IV, Bioshock Infinite, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, God of War: Ascension, Pikmin 3
The year the 7th gen came to an end, and the 8th gen came in full swing. This feels like the year the COD craze really began to die down, COD Ghosts was still successful, but it was seemingly no longer over saturating the market. GTA made a great comeback with GTAV that easily became the most successful game of the year, and Rayman Legends is in my honest opinion the best platformer of all time.

3. 2004
- Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Jak 3, Sly 2: Band of Thieves, Fable, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Half Life 2, World of Warcraft, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Far Cry, Doom 3, Halo 2, The Sims 2
All 3 of the PS2's Platformer Trio releases stellar releases this year. The Sims 2 came out, and is still my favorite in the series since it heavily advanced from its predecessor yet didn't require DLC like the later installments, and GTA:SA was also great, although that one may have not aged to well unfortunately.

4. 1994
- Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid, Earthbound, Earthworm Jim, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Castlevania Bloodlines, Final Fantasy VI, Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, The Elder Scrolls: Arena, Blackthorne, Doom II
Definitely the best year in gaming for the '90s. It was late into the 4th Gaming Generation, when 2D gaming had been perfected, and this year definitely saw the releases of some of the best 2D games of all time, and these games have for the most part aged very well, and are still great to enjoy 24 years later.

5. 1991
- Super Mario World, Sonic the Hedgehog, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Castlevania IV, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, Final Fantasy IV, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, Mega Man 4, Another World
This was the year the 16 Bit Wars came into full swing, which was an epic battle for the gaming industry. This in many ways feels like the first modern year of gaming, Super Mario World and the SNES helped to make the Save feature a standard in gaming, PC gaming was getting way better, and gaming in general was starting to feel more in depth, and less like just take-home arcade machines.

Honorable Mention - 1998
- Banjo Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot: Warped, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid, Xenogears, Grim Fandango, Baulder's Gate, Half-Life, StarCraft, Thief: The Dark Project, Resident Evil 2
Yes, this was a great year in gaming, the games I listed are an example of why it was good. But why is it just an honorable mention, you might ask, shouldn't it be at the top? Well, simply put, a lot of games from this year did not age well at all, the 5th Gaming Generation as a whole is one of the worst aged gaming generations, since it was the dawn of 3D gaming, and developers were starting from scratch, unlike the 4th gen before it where 2D gaming had been perfected.

Completely agree with you on 2004 and 2007. Don't forget 1996 and 2001 too! 1996 was THE YEAR for 5th generation and the rise of 3D gaming. 2001 had a lot of huge titles such as Super Smash Bros. Melee, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, and Grand Theft Auto III.
