Subject: If you could choose the year of your birth, when would you pick?
Written By: 90s Guy on 05/12/18 at 1:18 pm
If you could any other year to have been born, when would you pick and why?
I would pick 1940 or 1941:
-I would be able to enjoy malt shops, Woolworth's, Drive-In movies
-I could watch the Wonderful World of Disney while Walt Disney was still alive
-I would be able to watch the birth of Rock N' Roll happen, being young enough to be both a fan of Elvis in the 50s and then a fan of The Beatles. I would be young enough to watch the Hippie, Disco and Punk cultures be born and die before I turned 40.
-I would be able to attend a speech by JFK, RFK and MLK in person. I would be able to see Muhammad Ali in his prime in the flesh. I would be able to see legends like Joe Frazier and Rocky Marciano in the flesh.
-I would be able to see films starring Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne while they were still were alive, in the theater.
-I could buy a car with tail fins
-I would be young enough to watch the birth of CDs and Home Media and enjoy them.I would get to see technology change from analog to digital, to see the birth of cell phones and Facebook
-I would be only 77 or 78 today, old enough to have another decade or so of life if I am lucky
I consider that generation in some ways one of the luckiest in history. Vietnam for Americans of that age being the one big sad exception.

I think born around the mid 1950s is what I would like the best. They can remember the Kennedy assassination most likely. Those people got a bit of '60s, '70s, AND '80s if you know what I mean. They got the really old school a bit as a child (early '60s), the more modern '70s as a late adolescent and very young adult, the even more modern 1980s as a late young adult and early thirtysomething, and they're still not that old today being only in their early to mid 60s. So I think being born in the mid 50s is pretty good, they really got everything in a way IMO.

That's my parents' age. They were born in 1954. I feel they kind of came in on the tail end of the 60s (being only 14 when the 60s ended). They seem to only remember the worst parts of the late 60s. Their perspective is that the 70s was a turbulent, dark time of change, and both feel the 80s was the best time of their lives. They didn't meet until 1989, but the 80s was the time they really were happy during. They were more the Disco generation rather than the Woodstock generation. And my father hated Disco with a passion.

My mom is a 1949er and my dad a late 1952er. My mom even remembers the 50s some and obviously the 60s. My dad being a December 1952 born seems more '70s influenced than my mom and has little or no '50s memories, still defintiely remembers JFK assassination though. My mom was married before and met my dad in the '80s. My dad was one of the youngest that could have been sent to Vietnam but he signed up for the Navy and was never sent to Nam thankfully.

I always felt like I was born 5 years later than I should have been. As a kid, I always wanted to be 5 years older. Now, I'm glad I am NOT 5 years older. lol.
Actually, I have a theory as to why. It may have been a previous life (if you believe in that) but that would have meant that I died as a young child in that previous life. :\'(

I've said this on Popedia before, but while I'm happy with when I was born, if I had to choose something else, I'd go with like 2029 to have even more advanced technology than what I had growing up.
I know we don't know what the world will be like then or after that, but this is under the assumption that the world hasn't been destroyed by nukes or something else by then. :P

I don't have any problems with my actual birth year.
However, if I did have the option, I would have chosen to be born in 1972.
That would have made me a '70s kid, '80s teen and '90s young adult.

Any year between 1978 and 1981.
I would have loved to have experienced my childhood in the '80s, yet at the same time grown up with all the diverse popular culture that came out of the 1990s and early 2000s. during my adolescence.

1976
80's kid
90's high school teen and college guy
would totally embrace the culture of that time period
THIS. I'd love to have been born in the early-mid 70s, or circa 1972/1973-1976/1977. The perfect age to experience the earlier/New Wave/pseudo Late Boomer & Early Xer era of the 80s as a child. Growing up with 70s cartoons still on the air (Scooby Doo, Super Friends, Richy Rich, etc.) and 80s cartoons making big strides (He-Man, Transformers, Inspector Gadget, etc.).
They had the stereotypical 80s childhood, but they were also old enough to remember the tail end of the 70s & or the 70s influenced early 80s, and were also old enough to have been teenagers and immersed in core Gen X youth culture in the late 80s & 80s influenced early 90s (think the movie Heathers, or tv shows like Saved By The Bell, those were definitely targeted towards early & mid 70s borns).
They were also young enough to be the stereotypical grunge fans in the early 90s. Not to mention being at the peak of their youth culture (ages 13-19) during the peak in popularity for 90s era house music, golden age hip-hop, brit pop, new jack swing, 90s R&B/Pop, Ska, etc. all being stereotypical Gen X brands of music that were in their peak in popularity from 1988-1996.
Finally, they were the ultimate 90s young adults, being in college during the mid 90s as the internet exploded in popularity, and entering the workforce in the mid-late 90s during the dot-com boom (I'm sure you could guess which cohort was the most immersed in the popularity for stocks in the rising industry that was the internet at the time ;)). Overall, being born in the mid 70s is like the perfect age of having an old school upbringing, and a modernized young adulthood. I'd call them the F*R*I*E*N*D*S Generation, but they were definitely not apart of the Brat Pack Cohort of their mid-late 1960s babies counterparts (in which the actors of the show, and characters they portrayed, were apart of), but they definitely were in their core young adult years (20s/30s, graduating from university, first major internships/jobs, first longterm relationships, living on their own, getting married, etc.) when the show was on the air, going from ages 17-22 when it began to ages 27-32 when it ended.
Even though they were technically on the later side of Gen Xers (though arguably still in the core of the generation, definitely on the later side of things), they seemed to have had the most pro-typical Gen X experience, if that makes any sense. This is from the various Gen Xers I have met that were born in the 70s. All in all, being born from 1972-1977 would've been badass :D.

One way or another, you're gonna get screwed regardless of when you were born.
If you were a teen in the '60s, chances are you would've been either drafted into Vietnam, or caught up in home-grown violence from war protesters.
If you were a teen in the '70s-'90s, you would've been coming of age at a time when the crime rate in the US was sky high. Plus, in the '70s you had the oil crisis, the '80s had the AIDS epidemic, and in the '90s you had the LA Riots, Persian Gulf and Yugoslav Wars, and at the end Columbine.
Plus, back then you didn't have Spotify or Apple Music, you'd have to pay for entire albums rather than just a service to listen to those albums. You also didn't have the internet and wouldn't have been able to get whatever information you want whenever you wanted, and if you were an outcast at school, you'd have no online friends to talk to for support. Plus no internet porn.

Well the LA Riots wouldn't affect a 90s teen if they didn't live in LA.

Hey no period is absolutely perfect. I'd love to witness the 1920s, 1930s, or 1940s, but the issues of those time periods like segregation, war world 2, cold war, great depression, holocaust make me fearful of the periods despite the great pop culture. Honestly I'm fine with the year I was born in as I'm always more interested in seeing the future than going to the past. The future will have awful things, but wanting a uptopian time period is what will cause you to suffer more than anyone else while everyone who accepts that things won't be the best/good end up being more satisfied.
Now with all that said if I could be born 100 years into the future I'd be excited. New wonders for mankind.

1969 because I'd caught the 80s and all the best artists--Michael, Prince, that old mattress Madonna-- in their prime and enjoyed the pop culture to the fullest.
OR
1979 because I'd have caught 3T at their apex.
Plus, I'd have a longer time with my parents...I didnt get enough time with them.
The only downfalls to this is in 69 my mother was married to her first husband and he looked like a pug, so I wouldn't be as cute as I am now.
By 79 she was with my father, so I'd have still be cute. LOL

- I'd probably have a better imagination than now due to lack of Internet in schools (I think.) My imagination is already pretty solid, though.
- I'd get to play through the Sonic series during my formative years (earliest contact I had with Sonic games was watching my brother play Shadow the Hedgehog in 2005, on his GC... And I could never get used to the controls.)
- By the time I developed a certain hormonal drive, the Emo culture would rise. If I moved to California, it's possible I'd be able to marry whatever guy I actually fell in love with in the late 2000s, even if CA didn't allow gay marriage in the mid 2000s.
- I could take two years off before college, have a camcorder ready upon hearing that the creators of YouTube sold the site to Google, and would have plenty of time to record videos that would eventually get deleted by Viacom later in 2007.

1993. Five years earlier than I was born. I would’ve graduated high school in 2012 and college in 2016. I wouldn’t be graduating college directly into this mess, but I would also miss the 2008 financial crisis. Plus it would be nice to remember the 2000s better. I also think I’d be slightly happier if social media became super popular later in my life, but I still like that it exists. Other than that, I’d like to be born pretty close around the year I was born.

1971 or so. 5 years earlier. My senior year would have been in 1989, music was some of the greatest to me. I already have long since felt about 5 years older, and without planning it, my 2 longest life partners were born in 1971. I would have started a career and maybe family before the dark mid 90s.
It might not have worked out too well for my parents as they would have been 12 and 13.

1971, but that would've meant that My Brother would be a month older than me since he was born in February 1971 and I would be born in March of 1971.

I'm OK being 1960 born. 60's kid, 70's teen, 80's twentysomething - I wouldn't change it.
Same here! I wouldn't change being born in 1980. The 90s were pretty much my decade. Coming of age in, teenage antics, growing up. I remember the 90s from beginning to end! The 80s as well, early childhood and childhood. Growing up and looking up to my mom. Of the 80s I can only remember 1982 to 1989. :)

I'm happy with my birth in 1980 as well!

That's awesome. I only have memories from 1984 onward. Anything I might remember from before then is fuzzy.

Me too, 1984 to 89. I only included 1982 and 83 because I have some vague memories from those two years. But 1984 is the year I can remember well.

I remember several of the toys I played with as a 4-year-old in '84, because my parents took pictures of me playing with them. And I received some of them for Christmas that year. I also remember a toy I received for Christmas in '83 (and I only know I received it then because pictures were taken of me with it on that occasion... and I kept it until I was 8 or so).

Yup me too. In 84 my mom gave me various plaything and toys that I can remember. I also remember when my sister was born that was in May 1984.

One of the gifts I received for Christmas in '84 was Gears Go Round, manufactured by Discovery Toys. It was quite colorful.

For the record I still have it almost 36 years later.

I think we had similar ones in my Kindergarten class! Most playthings in the 80s were colorful.

They sure were! And I am happy that I had lots of colorful things to play with.

By the way, I remembered that I decided to take out my Gears-Go-Round set and build something with it for old times sake, a few years back. And I have posted a picture of it in another thread just now.

1977, get to be a kid in the 80s and teen/young adult in the 90s.

I'm changing my answer to 1986. I hate 2005 in my actual life, so I would hope a hypothetical life of mine didn't have its graduation year as 2005.

I would say The year My brother was born, 1971 so that way I could've graduated in 1989 rather than in 1992.

Around 1986/87.
Its like a wet dream to me.
-kid in the 90s.
-teen in the early/mid 00s.
-young adult mid/late 00s.
-mid 20s to early 30s in the 2010s.

I never liked Teddy Ruxpin. And I never owned one. I know it was interactive, and it helped kids learn. But honestly, I found it boring. It is the only toy from the 80s I didn't like.
