Subject: Nostalgia for the Gay/Naughty/Nifty Nineties (not the 1990s one lol)
Written By: Dundee on 04/24/18 at 4:35 pm
Yep, I certainly think that we're not done with 90s nostalgia and it will still go strong in the 2020s :P So do not worry 90s kids, Hollywood is getting ready to cash in on that new milkcow!
But I created this topic essentialy because I just learned there actually was 1890s nostalgia in the 1920s :o
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_Nineties
As a lot of people on here hypothesize that the 2020s will reflect many stuff of the 1920s' culture, this means nostalgia for a nineties too :P!
What are your thoughts on this?

Was the 1890s the first decade to receive popular cultural nostalgia, or at least as far as you know?

Time to give out some cartoon trivia.
In 1941 Disney released the Mickey Short "The Nifty Nineties" where it shows Mickey and friends in the 1890s. Meaning people in the 20th century had some nostalgia for the 19th century. Although Walt Disney himself is from 1901, but I assume this may have been created by show who are older (some animators during the early-mid 20th century were born during the 1880s/1890s).
Anyways I'm probably the only guy who wants 90s nostalgia to die. It certianly didn't do many good things for pop culture and created an nostalgia era that I consider toxic (elitist 90s kids between 2011 - 2015 literally ruined the 1990s decade for me). Despite being from 1990 I've run into a lot of mid-late 1980s born who looked down on me for "not experiencing" the 1990s in a "genuine way" (whatever that is supposed to mean).
Anyways I just wanted nostalgia to take a back seat in the 2020s. I'm surprised people aren't sick of it yet.
Oh right forgot to link the Mickey cartoon

Hard to say, but from what I've seen the 1890s are actually the first decade to be seen as having a culture on their own and even had a name: the mauve decade.
It was the decade of experimental short cinema and the very first commercial recorded singles after all!
So it helps in a way, before that I think people were more nostalgic for eras, not specifically decades.

I'm still confused why the 1890s was called the Gay Nineties i mean i know Gay means happy but still.

Pretty much the reason you've stated. The term "Gay Nineties" was started in the 1920s. "Gay" at the time didn't mean homosexuality like how people use it today, but literally just "happy". It was a time period a lot of old (and probably dead) folks look back on with nostalgia.

Wouldn't be surprised if we go back to that in the 21st century. People being nostalgic for eras and not decades. Loving a specific 5 years or remembering a tragic 15 years etc.

Apparently the decade was seen as loose and decadent. A bit like the 70s when the economy was in the pits, but instead of discos, people went to see cabarets and music-halls ;D
The nostalgia for that decade spawned a few movies btw during the 30s-60s

Everyone who was alive in the 1890s is dead now. In fact, there are maybe less than 50 people alive today born in the 1900s decade.

This thread so far doesn't have anything to do with the 2010s. I'm tempted to move this to More than a decade.
Well there's still no 2020s sub-forum and this thread was supposed to be that specific decade before veering into something maybe more interesting lol. But yes, that's a good idea :)

Lol, read any book from the 19th/early 20th century and it becomes really apparent. I didn't know words like "gayety" existed until I started reading Hemingway ;D

The skirts slimmed down and those wide-brimmed hats became popular. Also putting a feather on your hat was fashionable. If you really look at it, 1900s/1910s fashion is all proto-flapper (with the feathers and slim skirts) which is really interesting :D

Well, ladies' hats in the early 1900s became a lot more elaborate, so there's that. :D

You're very true! Look how transitional 1910s fashion looks:

Gayety is actually still a word, it's just not used very often anymore.

There was actually a renewed interest for 1910s fashion during the early-mid 2010s thanks mostly to the series Downtown Abbey :)

What are your thoughts on this?
I think there will be a few niche moments of looking back on culture from the 1920s especially from historians, Gatsby fans and fans of other 1920s books, jazz fans, silent movie fans and fans of Walt Disney's cartoon; otherwise most will see 1920s culture as way too irrelevant way too old and way too low in demand to actually make a huge mark on 2020s culture.
